Anybody modded a 20 gauge 870? Have one that I butchered when I was a kid, but now want it to be something fun for my girl to shoot, also a nightstand gun for her. Receiver is still good. Thinking about an 18" barrel and a +2 extender. Switch out the wooden pump with some polymer, but cant decide on stock. Standard polymer, pistol grip with shoulder stock, retractable, side fold, fold over. Its been a process to even find this stuff for a 20 but I did. Now I'm just not sure about what style and brand of furniture. She has no input. So wondering if any of you have tooled around and could either recommend or advise to stay away from any particular style or manufacturer. Thanks

Something similar, hides under the cover.  Shotgun with low recoil slugs alternate with buckshot...

Hope you don't have kids or grand kids running around.   :'(

If I did, it would then be secured in the gun safe, as all my weapons are whenever I leave the house, except the
one(s) on my person.  The picture was an example only, not mine...opsec does not allow me to offer my homes protection.  ;)

Thanks for your thoughts.

Mossberg makes a few nice 18.5" barrel, pump, home defense type shotguns.  Personally, especially for a woman, I would not go larger than a 20 gauge.  A 20 is very effective at the ranges you would be dealing with in a home invasion, and there is less concern with over penetration.  They are also relatively inexpensive and fool proof.  My wife brought a 12 gauge double barrel to our marriage which her deceased husband bought for home defense when they used to travel in an RV.  I asked her if she'd ever shot it..."No".  I then explained to her that she would probably hurt herself trying to shoot the thing, it's heavy as hell, and after the thing kicked the crap out of her on the first shot, she'd never get the second barrel fired.  It now sits in a closet.

She now has the Sig P238 on the nightstand.  No kids to worry about, so it stays on top of the stand all the time, cocked and locked.  On my side of the bed sits a Sig C3 .45 with night sights and Crimsontrace laser grips.  Both have extra magazines handy, and both have Hornady Critical Defense rounds in them.  We also have an ADT security system with a couple of signs in the yard saying so.  Every time a door opens in the house, it beeps twice in two locations, even when not armed.  That and six dogs will probably alert me, or make the bad guy choose another home.

Beags...I really think you should check out the Sig P238 for your wife, particularly with her being so small.  My wife is 5'3" and about 135lbs, with small hands, and she handles that gun very well.  Perfect size for her hands, and the recoil is not bad at all.  My .45 is too much for her to handle...she's just not comfortable shooting it.

I was issued my first sidearm at 18... Have not been unarmed since. I carry a 4" taurus 5 shot 44 mag CONCEALED! currently. Have shot 2 deer at between 80 and 95 steps with this pistol. Headshots on b-27's at 50 are no prob... Yes reloads are slow. Speedloaders help. 180 xtp @ 1500fps limits number of shots needed on deer, elk, bear and barmints of all kind.

I usually go very few places I can't carry. Sometimes I break the law in lieu of protecting myself and my family. Freedom has costs.

Family of 7, high deer population, quick ethical kill, cheap tasty protein, excellent practice... Hunting deer with a pistol takes skill and is much more certain than a bow or crossbow at ethical ranges under most conditions... Heck as far as defense goes my 80# 4'11" 13 yr old daughter is proficient at the "el presidente" and "bill drills" in times most cops can't match. She as well as my 4 boys are all learning to be responsible, proficient and capable with a firearm, a knife, a car, a HARLEY, a plane, finances...., Yes I must master these as I master my life! These are great thoughts for adults and children alike! Just my 2 cents!  :2vrolijk_21:

BTW from personal experience, first hand accounts and exhaustive research... 380, 38spl, 9mm, 357mag, .40, 10mm, 44spl, 44mag, 45acp, 5.56, 7.72, 12gauge.... 115-250 grain hollowpoint at over 850fps put in centermass will slow down ANYONE... It will give you time for the second and maybe third round. Just practice and make sure you are WILLING to make the shot and CAPABLE of doing it without hurting anyone else! Shoot straight and tell the truth! Col. Cooper said it best :)  :2vrolijk_21:

All,
With all of this craziness going on these days, I'm in the market for a little protection for Suzy. As many of you know I travel quite a bit, and there have been break In's in my neighborhood.  She has small hands and is about 125 lbs, any suggestions or help is appreciated.  I'm thinking a small frame 9mm or a .380
GLOCK 19

My wife is 5'-0" tall and about 115 lbs. It's no issue for her at all. When I leave on business it sits ready to go on her side of the bed with +P hollow points.

They might not be the prettiest gun around but the will function without fail.

Good thing I have deer hanging out in my yard all the time.  When things get rough I'll have fancy buckskin chaps, vests and jackets.  (gonna haf ta stock up on some nice brass zippers). -And some protein.
Another benefit- a cleaner yard!  You can't take a step without walking on pellets.
I'll kill 'em with whatever piece I have on my person at the moment.  (Should get a "suppressor though).
I just wish I could grow some taters here to go with it. ;)

Glock 19 might be the most handy self defense gun pistol since the first 5 shot 38spl da revolvers came out. Light, reliable and easy to master.

Just got off the range,
Suzy liked the Glock 19 (with some options) and also liked the Legacy Escort M/P TAC 12 GA semi auto.... she gets both, let's face it.....a good chick is hard to find and she certainly knows what to do with hard things......... :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

I'm kinda looking forward to playing with the shot gun, the Glock may be fun for a shoot or two.  Thanks to all for the input.

Happy holidays,

Nice. I carry a 19 at work. It is a nice, maintenance easy gun.
