Title: 04 Pumpkin vs 05 Cherry...
Post by: 2BAGGR on September 02, 2015, 11:22:10 AM
Were there any differences in the two bikes?     Besides color?      Which one would you buy?

Cherry stock came with a chopped tour pak, color matched inner fairing (04's  were painted  black) and smooth lens headlight and spots... other than that the only difference I remember is the colors (same graphics). With that said... of course I would say the 04 Pumpkin was the best.  :D

Yeap, adjustable vents in the lowers on the better 05 SEEGs.

I know, I know....   It was still probably the best bike I've ever had and certainly as dialed in to me as any I've had.  But it was also going to be ridden the least.  The Road Glide, just by nature of the fixed fairing, is the better over-the-road bike and it is certainly as dialed in to me as the SEEG was and is even more comfortable.  The Road King is the best toy I've got.  So the two bases of over the ride for miles and local or regional hopping were just too well covered.  The SEEG was too cool of a bike to just set as much as it would while the others got ridden and I was too lazy to do what would still be its regular maintenance for no reason.  Along with all that though there just wan't anything left to do to it.  Still a cool bike though.  :2vrolijk_21:

Another BIG difference was the wheels, Thunderstar on the 2005 and 3 spokes (Sorry Gary, but I hate that 3 spoke more than the solid wheels ) on the 2004. I was just telling the Little One
this week that I would like to find a low mile Colbalt Blue 2004 and swap out the wheels from my Teal, then sell the Teal.

That's why I only own one bike (and car for that matter)... never owned more than one bike at a time but have had multiple cars... one (or more) are always getting neglected. More than likely this will be my last bike as I'm finding myself riding less, and less each year.... getting old, doing family stuff (wife, kids, grandkids...) just don't find the time or desire too. :nixweiss:

No worries... I liked the Detonator's (guess that's why there are so many flavors of ice cream :D)... I don't remember (I could be mistaken) but I don't remember the Detonator's being on any other bike prior to the '04's where the Thunderstars were already available prior to '05. Oh, and the solid wheels.. that is what I really liked about the Fatboy's and the reason I had one of those prior to my SEEG.

Anyway this is a great thread to take us down memory lane. :2vrolijk_21:

I hold my tongue (and typing) when it comes to others bike, there is a couple of years of CVO that I wouldn't own for free. But like you say, that's why there are so many flavors out there, to each his own. I only mentioned you because I love your bike and didn't want to offend, it's just my opinion on the wheel.

The Sunrise Yellow Pearl is one of the most beautiful colors ever created! My only problem is I work on yellow ( School Bus Mechanic ) all day and need something different.
That said, if I had the funds for a 3rd bike in the garage, that would be my first choice.

I agree w/that (had I not bought in '04 and got my :pumpkin:) the Sunrise Yellow is what I would be riding right now... Similar to you me driving, riding, being around red fire apparatus for work a red bike never appealed to me... nothing wrong w/them just when you see that color daily on vehicles it's like color overload when your own vehicle is that color.

The Thunderstar is cast whereas the Detonator is forged making it a better wheel. The chrome however was prone to peeling.

Tour pak (King or Chopped) were options, vented lowers came stock on the '05's (non-vented stock on '04's no option of vented since they didn't come out until '05).

04 didn't have vented lowers.  Harley didn't use them until 05.  The tour pak came with the 05 bikes and not the 04s.  Wasn't an "option" as part of the OE 2004.  If you've got them for an 04 they were bought separately from the OE bike.

All depends on what you call/consider an "option" :nixweiss:... my bike was delivered w/the KTP... since I had to wait nine months for delivery of my bike I had time to order the color matched KTP and it was delivered/installed when I picked bike up. The TP's were included in the P&A Catalog in '04 which came out shortly (if not before) the SEEG were released.

They may well be factory but they are not original.... Vented lowers from Harley-Davidson didn't come out until '05. I got one of the last '04 Pumpkins that year (delivered 7/1/04) I can assure you that vented lowers were not offered from the factory that year.

I see what's on the cobalt blue & black however, that was an accessory.  04 SEEGs didn't come with the chopped tour pack until 05 MY.

I had two 2004 Orange/Black SEEG's (courtesy of a deer incident totaling the first one), one an early 2004 build and one a later 2004 build.  They did not come standard with vented lowers and did not come with a tour pak.  I purchased a color matched King tour pak and hardware from the Accessory Catalog for each bike.  The color matched vented lowers were not available until the 2005 model year SEEG's.

But we all now Harley didn't then do "factory options."  There was just one OE spec for the bikes.  That the dealer separately ordered  a tour pak (or a left handed chrome SE nut buzzing widget to enhance ride comfort) and had it on at time of delivery in now way makes it part of the factory spec for the bike.  It's still a dealer add-on.

Whatever!!! :P ::) :D

Bottom line...

1.  The '04's didn't come with vented lowers (they weren't even an "option" in the P&A catalog that model year).

2. You could order a color matched king or chopped tourpak as an "option" from the '04 P&A catalog.

I actually just got this bike-its in extremely good shape with only 18000 miles-I was looking for a cherry one til I saw this bike-but anyway-I was wondering- I seem to have an engine noise at around 1800-2000 rpm if I am in 4th or 5th gear-is this a common thing-is it repairable-am I lugging it?-I don't feel like i'm lugging it-it sounds top end but sort of like a rattle-if I drop a gear and keep the rpm up it seems to go away-I have a 2000 RK with a 95" kit and an 03 heritage that do not make this noise-is it just a 103 thing? any advice would be great-thanks-I love this bike but not that noise-

At 1800 rpm, odd are you are lugging the motor.  The only significant issue with the 103 motor in your bike was premature wear (wearing out) of the cam and crank chain tensioners.

Cheeko,

It could be valve train noise or piston slap or harmonics of something else.   If it were mine I would i would first do a compression test and leakdown test.   It will tell you what your cranking and allow you to compare front to rear cylinder.   The leakdown will tell you if you have an bleed off either in the valves, etc.    While doing the compression test it will allow you to take a look at the plugs to see what the running conditions are of each cylinder.

If the motor was a 88 or 95 it would not really be considered lugging, but as a stroker motor the recommendation was that under 2500 was considered lugging.   BTW do you hear the noise if your running and get on it to get around a car or accelerate?  or under steady throttle running.
