What do you do if the temp gets too hot (and what is too hot?), pull the bike over and let it cool?  And with synthetic oil is it as much of a problem than with petroleum oil? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Gentlemen,

Count me in for the oil temp gauge.  I'm also interested in a hidden antenna.  Can anyone help with the manufacturer's name and the unit's cost?

Thanks,

I hope we can set this oil gauge up with the red light our gauges have. It just wouldn't be cool without that light and ya know we have to be cool.

Ask the dealership to take the bulb out of the OEM air temp guage and put in the new oil temp guage.

SWEEEEET!!! Count PJ57 in on the oil temp gauge.  I was hoping HD would come out with a spun aluminum face compass, but oil temp is mucho mas important.  Most of the time I don't know or care what direction I'm headed as long as I end up somewhere.  Can I get an "amen?"

I hate to get rid of the air temp gauge. Its so useful. But since all of you are going with somthing less important like oil temp on a hot rod. I guess I'll do the same. Make sure to count me in as well.

IF you guys would take your fairing off and move the air temp sensor away from the head light ( they put the sensor on my bike right next to a heat source )  you would get a more accurate reading. I agree I would rather have oil temp gauge.

Have you guys seen these in the '05 P&A catalog?  Probably only a matter of time before they're available for the Electra Glides and in the Spun Aluminum Metal Face to match our bikes.

New member to the list but have read with interest of the oil temp gauge.  Seems the discussion has been ongoing for quite some time.  Don't know if this bodes well for the manufacturing or not :)

In any case please let me know if an acquisition phase has moved off list or if it's still just a waiting stage for production.  Figure that since I'm sitting outside anyway an ambient air temp gauge is a bit redundant but I would like to keep track of oil temp more easily than fiddling with the dipstick.  So I'm a prospective customer too.

Thanks,
Don

I have been talking to Roger for the past several months.  They have been working on the Oil temp. Face and he said in another month.  But he siad that two months ago as well.  My dealer here has also talked to me many times and received the same information as I have.  He is working on the Aluminum face, but when will the gage be ready?  So maybe the end of September.  If we get any more news I will post.

This may have been covered previously in the thread and, if so, sorry that I missed up.  But has anyone who has spoken with the manufacturer of this kit asked how the sending unit will be handled?  Where it mounts and what if any harness modifications will be necessary to tap in the gauge and sender?

Another related question that just came to mind.  For anyone who has been inside the fairing already.  Is there any reason that the gauge on the right side (I think it's volt meter but don't remember for sure) currently close the oil pressure gauge could not be moved over where the air temp gauge currently resides thus allowing the oil temp and and oil pressure gauges to be on the same side for quick visual checks?

Thanks,
Don

Actually, on my road glide I just relocated the voltage meter to the left side and the connection is just the + 12 volt which is already on the left side as well as the right side. On the RG this gave me oil press & oil temp on the right side with fuel and volts on the left side.

As far as the sending unit, it goes right into the engine where it replaces and exsisting oil plug and one wire routes to the dash to connect to the gage. Very simple and also well documented in Roger's kit which includes everything you need.

Instead of putting the new oil temp gauge in place of the ambient air temp gauge I think I'll move the voltmeter over there and put the oil temp gauge where the volt meter was.  That way the oil pressure and oil temp instruments will be stacked one above the other.

Runs up along the frame rail with the other wires/clutch cable to the fairing, makes a very clean install.

Got my guage tonight.  Just had a chance to rip the box open and take a quick peak, before heading off to dinner with my wife Babe, West Coast Girl (from this site) and Sonia.   The guage looks just like the HD guages, except in the real fine print it has Roger's name.  Anybody else got their's yet??

JC, Your note from the 27th had  the following comment that I was curious about:

**Also, a reminder for you guys to remember to change the boot on your bulb to make your light red, in the new guage!  Don't forget this or it will screw up your look good.

I ordered my gauge from Rodger yesterday and I asked him about this and he said there wasn't any need to do anything with the gauge as it has the red light in it.

Just recieved my oil temp gauge today! I sent a check out Tuesday and at my door on Friday. (I do live about 90 miles from his shop) The gauge looks great and I am going to install it this weekend. Thanks JCZ for the updates and thanks to Roger for nice gauge!

Congrats on getting it in hand.  I got an email early in the week saying mine was on the way.  So I'm looking forward to it.  I'm a fair bit farther away though so probably still have another day or three to wait.  Was really impressed with McEwan's speed of handling and courtesy in dropping the email saying it was on the way.  Seems like a really good guy to work with.

Well guess I better get on the ball and order on so I don't get left behind.  Does the gauge only go to 300 degree like the others he makes?  Several freinds say they have pegged it in hot slow traffic.

JC, just like you I thought that engine oil was supposed to start bubbling in the high 200s (depending on additive package, pressure, etc etc etc).   Somewhere around there Dino oil is going to start making charcoal chuncks too.  Temps required may not be quite that low; but that much temp.....   it's still gotta hurt [smiley=confused5.gif] .

Was wondering because I've got the road king so hot that the bike shuts down.  And have had people say that they pegged the temp gauge.

Gauge arrived this morning.  Looks beautiful.  Confirmed the red lighting being stock in the new gauge with McEwan.  My only disappointment (and it's not a big deal) is looking at the instructions and finding out the bike's original harness has to be cut even though all the same wires are being used.

Would've been nice to either have complementary plugs in the gauge (a few bucks extra cost would've been ok) or perhaps a little jumper harness to mate to the OE harness connectors.  Before cutting the OE connectors off I'll take a look at them to see if their mates are something that might be available over the parts counter or from someplace like Waytek.

I did what I think you suggested and moved the volt meter to where the air temp was and put the new oil temp gauge above the oil press. I made my own harness with spade connectors and left the stock wire harness in tacked. I don't remember what size connectors I used but I got them at Lowe's. The only differance I noticed was that the needle on the gauge was a different color than the stock gauges.

That'll be great if the OE connectors are such that they can be left in tact with just using some spade connectors.  Just figured it'd be something different.  Glad to know that.  Thanks.

I'd also planned on moving the new gauge over with the oil pressure gauge as well.  Just makes sense to have both oil related instruments together.

Thanks again!

As mentioned earlier I got my gauge today.  Initial reaction was that quality and finish looked great.  Nicely done piece.  When I ordered it the simple conversation that transpired was basically this:

"Hi, read on the CVO site that the gauges you've been working on so long are finally ready."

"Yeah, they sure are."

"That's great, and the look good.  Match up well to the other gauges?"

"Sure do."

"Ok, how do I order one?"

That was pretty much the conversation.  No qualifications or equivocations of any kind.  Just "sure do" when asked if the part looked good and matched the other pieces.

Trouble is when I got it home this evening to compare against the bike itself it really doesn't.  At least not completely.  The spun metal face is great.  The needle on the instrument, however, is a different color, a different width in places, and a different length.

So aside from being pretty much completely different it is a good match.

I know, I know, it may not be a big deal in the grand scheme of things.  But when I asked the question would it have been such a big deal to say "yeah, they look good but the needle is a little different."  I'm just always annoyed by little surprises that show up only after a vendor has presented the product and taken your money.  It is their job to know what they're presenting after all.....

Again, I'm sure it will prove to be a wonderfully crafted instrument that is accurate and would have a long service life.  But it's not really what it was presented to be esthetically (at least in my opinion).   And when/if Harley offers an instrument to do the same thing I'll yank this one and replace it just to get what I thought I was paying for the first time.

I see a pic up now that shows them but it was posted after I had ordered.  So if anyone else is still considering it please look the imagery over closely so that you'll not be mildly suprised either.

Hmm...thank goodness for pics.  Looks 'similar' but not exactly 'matching.'  I would say that the spun face looks pretty good.  The graphics design looks pretty good.  The needle is way different, and the arc angle of the guage that is used is considerably smaller than stock guages.  I think I will pass for now.  I wish it were more exact.  But then again, I am a perfectionist for detail.

Nope, no changes in '05 and as WFP pointed out, the photos are as installed on an '04 B/B SEEG.

I agree with Doc and the others, close but not close enough for install on a $30,000+ scoot.

How does the lighting match up?  Similar color and intensity?

I don't know if the 04 and 05 instruments are different as described above or not.  I just know that it's not really a close match to the instruments on my 05.  In and of itself that's one issue.  But I was really bugged more by the fact that I'd asked the question on matching appearance before ordering and wasn't told anything.

Perhaps I'm being overly critical.  I don't know.  But when the public history has been one of extended delay ostensibly so a supplier who is "very picky' could get it "just right" and when that supplier then tells you directly that it matches up I'd expected something better.

I called McEwan after seeing the physical difference to ask if the instruments could be disassembled so that a needle off of one might be swapped on to the other.  It was an unlikely alternative but worth a phone call to find out.  In that conversation describing the dissatisfaction with the needle's appearance he offered the explanation of "we can't make 'em look exactly the same or Harley would be on us."

It seemed kind of a bail-out answer at the time.  But even if it were a real factor than it was known beforehand.  So when I asked the question about matching appearance before ordering the fact of a difference was known and could have (should have) been supplied.  It's just, quite frankly, a poor presentation of a product by a vendor/manufacturer.

Jack,
You're the first person I've seen mention  the compasses in quite awhile.

Just a thought, but for the perfectionists out there (which includes me) is there any chance that the needle off the air temp gauge could be used as a replacement for the needle on Roger's oil temp gauge?  If so, maybe Roger could install it on an exchange basis.  Send in your air temp gauge, Roger guts it and uses the needle. I don't want to get too crazy over this, but most of us are crazy anyway - so why not see if it's possible?  I personally would be willing to pay Roger extra for the needle swap.  Unfortunately, Roger's comment to Twolane leads me to suspect that there might be legal issues with him installing a HD part (however small) on something he's manufacturing and selling.  PJ

When he and I were discussing if a swap were possible he said that getting his instrument apart to the point of swapping a needle would "basically wreck" the gauge.  Didn't make it sound like a realistic possibility.

Another problem with swapping the needle from the air gauge would be that the point at which the stem comes through the stock instrument is different than the point at which the stem comes through the McEwan instrument. So the needle length is different.  And if you shorten one end the balance from the tail won't be right anymore.  So... well, it'd be just a problem......

Just received mine 10 minutes ago...read through everything and examined the pieces.  Nice work but I agree they will look different to the trained eye once on the bike.

Now a sender question...will I be draining the oil to install also, there iare ywo pieces to the sender one threaded into the other...I haven't looked at the bike yet but does the piece with larger diameter threads go in first or at all?

Before I finally talked myself out of installing mine (it just wasn't a good enough match for a $30k bike) I had already convinced myself that the installation could wait until the next oil change.  So, yeap, you'll be draining the oil.

The plug in the pan that it screws in to is close to the drain plug you'd normally use.  It's ID is the OD of the sleeve that came with the sending unit.  That sleeve, however, doesn't have any kind of a hex side to it.  So screw the sending unit in to the sleeve then screw the whole thing in to the pan.  You'll be tightennig them up together.

My sending unit was all ready assembled. What i did was unscrew the plug untill it was almost out them got the sender ready. I pulled the plug and quickly replaced it with the sender. Lost about 3 or 4 table spoons full. My main problem was getting the plug out. It is lock tighted in and not much room to work.

Hey Magoo, I'm sure the gauge is well made and would perform flawlessly.  From it's look and from everyone else's descriptions of his prior work I have no real concerns over the quality of the instrument's performance.  And the spun metal face of the gauge is beautiful.  The trouble was that it looks as if all the attention was paid to that face and no one then thought to compare the needles.  It just looks as if it was an afterthought and it's a lot different.

I noticed it immediately upon holding it up against the bike for comparison.  The center stem comes through in a different location than all the other gauges is what first caught my eye.  This makes the nose and tail lengths of the needle different, the center oval is sized a bit differently, and it's a completely different color.

While I had no concern about the functionality or the general appearance of the instrument I finally decided against using it because the comparative appearance just wasn't close to good enough to hang on a $30k bike.  I'd rather use the silly little LED dipstick than be slightly annoyed by the thing everytime I looked at the dash.  And since HD has been offering an oil temp gauge for other applications I'm guessing we'll see one to match the spun metal pieces sometime with the common new product releases in Jan/Feb or late July like they do every year.

I'm using the LED stick at the moment as several of the HD parts guys I know have advised that oil temp gauges are in the works.  No one knew, however, if the SEEG format would be in the mix.  Seems strange that the 30k plus bikes seem to be waaaay down the priority list on many of the items.

I had the LCD stick and went back to stock after it blew out accellerating on a highway on-ramp.  That cam/o-ring design is not high on my praise list.  The barbs of the stock on hold better.

Know what you mean about the LED dipstick. I had one blow out on my '03 Ultra a while back right after the dealer put a big bore stage II kit on.  Seems whoever filled the oil didn't understand that the LED has to go straight in to lock the bearings.  Any turning will free up the filler stick.  I've not hand any issues since that time as several hours of cleaning is a great reminder.  I do all my fluids myself ususally anyways.

I use the LED and I also have a McEwan fairing gauge.  I've always used the two just to get comfortable knowing where the temp is.  Roger's gauge isn't really accurate until you get above 200.

I'm a bit annoyed that the gauge that I ordered is on the way with the needle issue.  I thought it was pretty clear that it would be modelled after the other gauges.  Live and learn.

This is precisely why a forum such as this is so beneficial.  One slight comment gets made about considering the LED dipstick and the ensuing conversation immediately and informatively highlights that the item in question can be a problem child if one isn't very careful.  Enough so to certainly make one think twice about whether any gain might be outweighed by the fuss of just having to think about something that you shouldn't really ever have to think about.

I mean, really, who wants to worry every time they hop on their bike about whether or not their dipstick might get blown?  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Man I'm glad to hear that I wasn't the only one that had an oil cap blow off the bike. But my situation was the opposite, the stock one chose the self eject option and so far the LED has stayed put.

Yeah, not to discount some of the issues with the LED dipstick that others have had, but I've had zero problems with mine either blowing out or being hard to remove.  Used it in two different bikes for over 2 years and 15,000 miles.

The instructions for mine say to turn it counter clockwise before trying to pull it out. It comes out pretty easy when its turned first. There is some sort of mechanism that releases it.

Mine is very hard to turn!!! then it is still EXTREMELY snug (you have to wiggle it on mine) to get it out.

I was advised against the compass by my local parts dept.  Apparently, it has to be re-calibrated often.  The calibration involves driving slowly in small circles....    Not a big deal, but it'll be out of calibration and pointing you in the wrong direction and you'll never know it.
