front fender contact
« on: October 18, 2007, 10:21:08 AM »

I've had a scuff mark on my lower right front fender since I got my bike at 2300mi. and have wondered how it got there since.
Anyway while washing it the other day I noticed a scuff mark on the right side lower fairing also. So it appears that in a slow left turn with compression of front forks the two will contact. The bike runs straight and solid at any speed and road I've been on. Has anyone experience this type of problem?

Thanks, Bill

Could be something to do with the rake of the front end... and could also validate why some of us are experiencing speed wobles at lower speeds than normal.

I've never seen this before.

Wonder if springs could be bad or no/not enough fluid in the forks? :nixweiss:

I've never felt the front end bottom out, the bike has 17,500 mi so hasn't had the 20k fork oil change yet. I've notified the local HD dealer, they haven't got back to me yet. The svc. mgr was a bit perplexed about it also..

Has or have you ever had the lowers off the bike?  If you don't pull them out as far as possible when re-installing the lowers, they can contact the fender.  I've seen it on mine also.  Loosened the lower attachment and pulled it as far out as possible and re tightened, fixed it.

I did have the lowers off this summer, and  I reinstalled them as far outward as possible. also  I did notice the fender scuff right after i got the bike @ 2300mi.

You might need to push the top in to allow for the bottom to go out.

Something to try.  Mine only contacted after I had them off.

See if this thread helps - fender hits lowers.

I had the problem with my last front fender.  Changed the fender after my accident and it's happened again.  So now I pull the leg fairings all the way back (to the inside).  I think it has to do with the forks being shorter than a regular Electra Glide.....

Moving the fairings out is one thing to do but the fender typically also has a bit of "play" in it. If you loosen the four fender bolts a bit you can rock the fender a bit. Lift up on the front of the fender and tighten. This will give additional clearance at the back of the fender.

When I took my lowers off today to install my Kuryakyn neck covers, I noticed a little mark on the back of the front fender of mine. >:(  It's on the right half of the fender:

Also have a spot on the right lower where it's been rubbing.  When I re-install it, I am going to make sure it's as outboard as it can be and hopefully keep it from rubbing further.

Have you ever taken the lowers off before? Is this a rub (something that can be taken out /wGlare) or a dent? :nervous:
