Broken speaker brackets
« on: December 04, 2007, 03:07:57 PM »

If you have ever had your fairing off did you check the speaker brackets?
Some say they are not necessary.
But I did notice that my fairing seemed to be shaking one day, and when I pulled off the cover I found both brackets broken.
I ordered new ones and replaced them when I did the Hawg Wired install, which required modifying the brackets a bit.

In this picture are a broken (lower) and a new bracket

This picture is the relief cut out for the Hawg Wired speakers.

I'm sure it will break again, but for now at least it is OK

Pretty common. I've also been through a pair of the inner fairing brackets. The 'ears' break off where they attach to the inner fairing. Instead of replacing them at $50 a clip, I simply replaced the ears with some heavy "L" bracket material pop-riveted to the original verticals of the brackets. They never broke again.

When these break I will be doing something different. This repair was done the night (late) before leaving for MV 07 07.

I don't know what you could do for the side brackets. It's a flimsy design that doesn't fit any speaker, other than the HD cheapies, without modification. Those things fatigue and snap just by looking at them sideways. Thank goodness they're cheap to replace.

I'm thinking maybe a piece of solid rod. We'll see the next time I burrow in there.

The problem now is there is now so much crap under the fairing, I don't know if there is enough room to add anything  :nixweiss:

Can't even see mine in there anymore.  I just did some body and fender work to the side brackets to bend them such that they still connected and also went around the big component speakers.  On top of that mounted another bracket to each of them that now holds the extra speaker bit and a HIG ballast (one each on each side).

Don't know whether it was magic bending technique or some other voodoo.  But as often as these break they've never broken on this bike; even with the tweaking and the extra parts hanging off of them.

I'm thinking with all of the extra mass you've added to the fairing, you've lowered the resonating frequency to level that prevents the cheap brackets from fatiquing. ;D

Either that or it's just so darned heavy now the bike can't go fast enough to really shake anything :nixweiss: ?

Too funny.  I've got a spare set in a drawer because I was sure I'd jinxed them once before for the same reason :mango: .

I'm wondering how much your front end weighs now, Don?  I've carried so much weight in my left saddlebag that I broke the rear saddlebag bracket.  That suckers expensive due to being exposed & chromed.  :coolblue: har!  spyder
