Replacement Gauge LED's
« on: April 23, 2008, 12:03:54 PM »

I replaced the burnt out bulb in my fuel gauge with the LED's last night. I was unable to get my hand in to unplug the headlight. the bulb holder was just hanging out behind the gauge, it had popped out of the socket. Anyway, I see no difference, as a matter of fact, it may be less bright than the stock bulbs. Too damn dark for me, eyes not being what they once were. I need a fix.

I'm guessing nobody else has had this problem. Maybe its just my eyes. But those gauges need to be brighter, I ordered higher watt replacement led's. Hopefully that will fix the problem. NOw for the fairing removal, should it have come forward more for me to be able to squeeze that plug or did I not remove all the screws?

I take my passing light brackets off before I remove the outer fairing. I know I'm anal but just easier and I don't risk damaging the fairing. I just replaced all 4 bulbs with RED bulbs from Advanced auto $1.98 per pair. They are brigter that the white bulbs with red boot covers. I'm satisfied with the brightness.

If you removed all the screws shown in the picture below you removed them all.

I've found if you have tension on the wires to the headlight it is harder because it's putting more pressure on the locking tabs on the plug. If you can get your hand in there w/a still a little slack on the wires and squeeze the plug to release the tabs on the plug it should come right off.

If my memory hasn't taken a complete and total dump, I believe the stock bulbs are 3.4 watts.  There are red replacement bulbs available that are 5 watts, and although that doesn't sound like much, the higher output with the true red "condomless" bulb does make a visible difference.  If we could find a 7 to 10 watt bulb that would fit, I think we would have a winner.  So far I've had no luck trying to find such an animal.

I just replaced all my dash bulbs with Super Bright's WLED-R5 wedge base bulbs. They are an exact color match for the tack and speedo, very bright and best of all they cured the dreaded gauge len fog up.

The WLED's are at the bottom of the page.

I saw that last one but I didnt think it would fit in the gauge hole with  those sticking out the side like that.

They fit just fine. And thats what lights up the sides of the gauge. A single LED wouldn't.

Good enough for me, 4 on order, better make it 5, one always is no good. Thanks

They look good, but don't fit the replacement Oil Tempurature gauge.  HD, as usual, made it slightly different than the original gauges

Sorry it didn't fit the OPG. I have the aftermarket gauge from Roger McEwan. Is the new bulb something  Super Brite has a replacement for?
