I talked to Cycle Electric and he said th 45 Amp Rotor is expensive. I think he said around $200.00.

If I remember correctly the Harley branded rotor packaged as an upgrade is MSRP at $265.00.  Have seen some of the aftermarket selling a 45 amp rotor for between $180 and $220.  The local shop that is an OE for some of the aftermarket has a guy that offers product somewhat directly.  Knew he at least used to do some selling on eBay also.  Just checked and he's still there.  45 amp rotor for $80.  That's not nearly as painful.

Only difference immediately apparent is the Harley branded kit includes a (stupidly expensive when priced by itself) outer primary gasket.  So that's 32 bucks to spend on top of the price of the rotor.

This thread shows the damage that can occur to a "loose" comp nut (addressed in a TSB)

http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=34375.0;all

At the end it shows the "normal" "special tool" I used to install the rotor. As mentioned above - very strong magnets - you can and most likely will hurt yourself and probably damage the magnets if you don't use some type of installer.

I was just wondering if I could get some feedback on the Charging system topic:

1) Am i correct that my 04 FLHTCSE has the 38 AMP charging system?
2) Is it possible that my charging systems can be upgraded to the newer 50 amp system?  Anyone done it?
3) Anyone have a parts list, if it is possible?

Thanks for any feedback the forum members can offer ..

1) yes
2) Yes, Porthole is doing it now.
3) All you need is to buy the 45Amp kit listed in the Harley accessory catolugue (part# 29999-97B).  Plus a quart of primary oil and I would replace the compensating nut while you were in there.

Follow TwoLanes links and you may find the rotor (non HD) for under a hundred, or buy the HD for about 240. The HD kit comes with a primary gasket.

If you change the comp nut as Bob mentioned you should torque it per the TSB  below.

In fact you should just do it the odds are against you not having the problem.

Has anyone changed out an old two phase system for the new 3 phase system ?
I haven`t  heard of anyone loosing a stator with the 3 phase charger.

Thanks for the feedback guys ..

I have talked to somone on another board that claims to have installed the 2006 three phase system on his earlier model Ultra.   He was not totally sure on the part number for the rotor, but he did say that the rotor he installed had 12 magnets on it.    He felt that his charging system was rated greater than 45 amp.

74505-06 voltage reg. assembly
29987-06 stator assembly
29943-06   ROTOR ASSY, 3 PHASE (taken from 2006 parts list)
may need repair pigtail, part number unknown, to connect regulator to harness.

Can anyone here confirm if the part number ive listed for rotor is the 12 magnet ???
Are there ways of getting additional amp output through different compinations of componets?

So I have been out buying parts for this new 3 phase system ..   Ive been told by parts counter that all nubers cross ref to the 50 amp alternator setup with an A or B for the stator ..

I ended up buying the 74622-06 regulator as it is the CHROME one ..   I think I have the part number for the repair pigtail, 74115-06 , to splice ...  but if anyone is able to confirm, as I have not located one yet, it woud be very helpful  ...

Interesting,  that the  29943-06   ROTOR ASSY is MUCH lighter than the original .. and in fact 1/8th inch shorter in height when they are lying face down on the bench side by side ..   does this seem correct to you experts out there?

74505-06 voltage reg. assembly - 74622-06 chrome
29987-06 stator assembly
29943-06   ROTOR ASSY, 3 PHASE (taken from 2006 parts list)
74115-06 ??? - repair pigtail  ??? to connect regulator to harness.

Any help would be appreseated ...

Well, I completed the Install of the 50 amp alternator, using the above mentioned part numbers.

It works Great in my 04 ...    moving on to the next project ...

Thanks for all the help, comments,  feedback ...

oh,  and sorry for hijacking the 45 amp thread ...  I will try and do a better job of not doing that in the future ...    :jack:
