Don, pull the rear tire.  Swing arm does not have to come off unless you want it to.

Thanks Jerry.  The bike was beginning to convince me this might be an option after all.  Sat on a stool next to it with a cold beer in my hand for a few minutes this evening.  Bike was still up on the lift so the beverage time allowed an excellent viewing moment.  Once Chrome Masters has the rest of the parts done in the pile there I'll have the caliper and axle here that will go back on the red bike as part of this task.  Going to wait to begin tackling the task until everything is here.

Don, pull the rear tire.  Swing arm does not have to come off unless you want it to.

Been a long last several days around here.  Thought I was going to get a chance to play with this this afternoon.  Then as soon as I got started had to stop.  So finally about 8:00 tonight got a chance.  Jerry was right on the money as always.  Swingarm is completely out of the way of the pan.  Once the tire is out of the way it's unobstructed (mostly).

If someone is ever changing a pan in the frame to go with chrome or to service don't do as I did and loosen the pan without eyeballing the dog bone very carefully.  A quick glance looked ok.  But when the pan dropped down and I was trying to work it out the back it was obvious the cross member was bent upwards just a bit.  The loose pan made it a small bitch to to find leverage to bring it back down flat.  Had it been straightened to begin the removal would have been much easier.

The springs on the oil pan baffle are a pain in the ass.  With a long screw driver and a long scraper blade not a tremendous pain in the ass.  But a pain in the ass nonetheless.  The light bulb over my head popped on (dimly) just prior to reassembly.  If anyone is ever swapping pans for any reason do this.  Made the reinstall a much simpler task.

Once just past the transmission case you can relatively easily still get at the ties to cut and remove.

Once it's slid back up in place the hard part of the task is done.  Then it's just putting it all back together again.

Here it is, basking in the redness of the new oil pan....  ::)

Looks good from the rear too.  Of course now there is something else I'll actually pay attention to keeping clean.

While the rear wheel was off a chromed rear caliper and a chromed rear axle were part of the reassembly.  New chrome and new red.  It really is Christmas in July.

Now the pan and axle that came off will go to Chrome Masters.  They'll become more shiny bits for the SERK project.

Thanks.  And it does look nice.  But......

I'm not sure the leak is fixed (dammit).

Or more accurately I'm not 100% sure I don't have a leak in a new spot.  I know that during reassembly some oil dripped/settled/collected from the bottom of the case on to the top of the pan and the gasket.  Wiped it off as well as I could but could not get at all of it.  This was both engine oil and tranny oil.

After it's first run of 30 miles or so had oil on the side of the pan.  Right side center. Not the old leak location.  Much farther back.  This is where most of the drippings had collected during reassembly.  Snugged the bolts a bit after a heat and cool cycle from the one 30 mile or so ride and am hoping that the oil I saw was simply residue squished out during assembly.  Been too busy to ride it much so won't get a chance to try it again until maybe tomorrow.  Am keeping my finger crossed it either will now seal up ok or was only some residue squeezed out during reassembly.

But, yeah, it's pretty :2vrolijk_21: .

Twolane, how did you make out on fixing the leak? Do you feel that it may have been self inflicted, perhaps by an added accessary or...Anyway I hope it is fixed and ....Man that pan looks way cool!

This particular leak fixed.  Have to be specific about saying "this" leak fixed though.  It was an obvious leak on a forward corner of the pan.  When reassembled that area was fine.  But there was a new leak at about the mid point back along the right side.  After lots of checking and looking and disassembly and reassembly it appears the new second leak is coming through the transmission case.

As odd and unlikely as that seems it's what the problem has rendered to.  There is an oil pan bolt that reaches up to the area of the case that is leaking.  Apparently the first reassembly and tightening that bolt caused what had been a weak spot to finish fracturing.  So while the first leak fixed without issue the second and new leak will require a transmission case to fix it.
