What I pod do I need?
« on: November 27, 2013, 09:17:15 AM »

Hey there, I just bought a I-Pod interface kit for my 2010 ULTRA, did not come with a i-pod. So I want to buy one fro e-bay, what model do I need. Whant to get a i-pod nano 7th generation. The one that looks like a mini, tiny i phone. Will this one plug in? and will it work? and if it does not plug in ( the plug is very small on the back on it ) is there a adapter? Cheers. And thanx for the info.

You'll want an ipod with the older "Apple" style plug rather than the newer "lightning" style plug.

the nano is the 'preferred' device, but really any ipod with the 30 pin connector will work.  be it an old iphone that you've just loaded music onto, to the touch, to the nano.  heck, even the classic will work, though the vibrations have been known to kill the physical hard drive.  the shuffle will not work.

there is an adapter for the newer lightning connectors, but if you haven't bought the ipod yet, better to just go with the 30 pin from the get go.

My 2013 CVO RK came with the iPod Nano. After a while I wanted to listen to live radio so I replaced it with a iPod touch and used an aircard to listen to "radio". Well, the touch really did not work very well as it kept closing even the music player app and then it would just play nothing. Then when it did work, it had a bad habit of coming on by itself when I started the bike and generally playing some kind of music at some volume I did not remember setting and that I really did not want playing at the time (hmmm, think ABBA at Biketoberfest). So, took it out and I am back to the Nano with a much reduced and more bike appropriate playlist!  ;D

The iPod Nano 7 with the lightning to 30 pin adapter works with the Harley iPod setup.  I use both a Nano 6 and a Nano 7 on my CVO Streetglide.
