Fogging Gauges
« on: January 23, 2005, 11:24:52 AM »

Having just bought my '01 FLTRSEI2, I have noticed that on a couple of occassions, the gauges (especially the air gauge) fogs up then clears up.  The first time I noticed it was after the dealer washed and detailed the bike, the other times was when I was riding at 35f and 25f respectively.  Has anyone else seen and/or done anything about it.  Could be just the extremes (having been washed and very low temperatures).   Haven't had a bike with a fairing/gauges before this one (FLSTF previously) Thanks..........

Blue, this is a common problem on the touring bikes and probably doesn't have a thing to do with the dealer washing your bike.  On the Electra Glide it is the fuel gauge that's notiorious for fogging.  Seems to happen more when there's a significant differential between temperature or humidity in the garage vs. the outside, but other times it happens without any rhyme or reason.  I haven't seen a cure yet.  I've grown used to it.

Thanks for the reply.  I feared as much although I'd hoped maybe I was a bead of silicon or a wrap of plumber's tape away from a cure [smiley=confused5.gif].  Cheers

My 2000 Roadglide does the same thing except Speedo and Tach are OK.  My 2000 Ultra never did this.  I thought it was the custom gauges they put on the Screamin Eagles. [smiley=confused5.gif]

My Air Temp guage has been fogging for some time.  Now it has some white powder like stuff growing in it.

Cool garage or washed bike + higher temp inside fairing/gauge = condensation.  Same as a window on a cold day.

it happens to me, too. But fog disappears after few minutes or even less if i let the bike directly under the sun. All the dealers i asked for told me it's normal ( [smiley=nixweiss.gif])

Some dealers have been melting a very small hole in the back of the guages to vent out moisture.  This has been done under warranty in some areas.  I have not yet given it a try yet, but my buds have with mixed results.

They are not sealed gauges and are designed with a hole in them to breathe.

The only real problem with the "breathing" gauge is that the condensation tends to leave deposits on the inside of the lens - the lens always looks dirty, but you can't clean it off without disassembling the gauge. [smiley=furious.gif]
