Bags and saddle for CVO Fat Bob 2009
« on: January 31, 2010, 09:32:32 AM »

Hi mates!

Do you know if I could find these bags and saddle combination for my 2009 CVO Fat Bob? Are they already available as a spare part (accessory)?

Hey there Apartaapee, did you ever go with the brown leather seat and bags on your Black & Fire Quartz Fat Bob?  If so...any pictures?

Hi Randylee!

I am still planning that as a one option but have not yet recieved my bike here to Middle East  ;) Absolutely, I will send some pictures if I able to get them (saddle and bags) here. I am serving here as a military observer and the bike will stay at the other side of the cease fire line  ;) But no worries, I can always cross the line and have a ride  8)

I really liked the look of the brown leather add-ons of an FXDF posted on MoCo's website that had a chitload of accessories
( http://accessories.harley-davidson.com/cat/beautyspreads/FXDF.jpg )  I thought it a shame how the factory two-up seat covered up the majority of the Fire Quartz paint job on the rear fender. So I went to dealership and ordered brown leather solo seat (51937-10).  I was disappointed when it arrived to see that it was soooo dark - especially compared to light brown colored seat and pillion pad on the 2010 FXDFSE2 sitting on the sales floor then.  I declined the 1st and ordered a 2nd seat thinking it that it could not come any darker.  The 2nd seat came just as dark, but also had some ripples in the leather that I didn't like.  I asked the dealership to hold it for a while and placed an order for the brown leather saddlebags.  I figured the shade wouldn't be big deal as long as all the components were similar.

Then...shortly after the saddlebags arrived, I found an ebay posting that was selling the brown Seat, Pillion pad, Backrest pad, and Saddlebags - all in great shape - all for $700.  SCORE!!  Paid only $50 shipping.  Items did not come with any hardware so I spent a few hundred dollars on sissy bar and mounting hardware and a cargo rack.  Dealership gave full refund of monies I paid for seat and saddlebags.

I got the solo seat on - pics below.

Looks good.  I have the brown solo spring saddle and brown bags on my blacked out bike.  Was thinking about getting your seat though to sit a little lower.  Spring seat adds about 2 - 3 inches of height.  Kills me that the saddles and bags are not the same color brown.  Every single picture from HD of them show the same color though.  Got mine last year and the dealer even called Harley and they said they were going to correct that in all the catalogs.  But haven't done it yet.

I met someone who works a lot with leather and advised me to go over the bags and apply a Darkening Conditioner.  I'm going to look more into my options are as far as different products.  Will let all you know what I get for an outcome.

I've got some results gents.  I went to visit the Oregon Leather Co. here in nearby downtown Portland.  They happen to carry mostly FIEBING'S products.  I took in one of the lighter saddlebags and told them I wanted to match it to my darker seat.  We initially agreed that the seat looked like the Oil Dye color "Chocolate".  After preping the bags with "Dye-Prep", I tested the dye on the bottom panel of one of bags - way too dark and seemed to be lacking the redish tint so I tried the Oil Dye color "Walnut" on the bottom panel of the other bag.  The shade seemed to be close but still too dark.  After reconsulting with Oregon Leather folks I learned that my technique needed to be modified in that I needed to dab most of the dye off my lamb skin; ie: apply very little at a time, and then really work around / work in what was left on the lamb skin.  I'm really happy with the final match.
To seal the bags up, it was recommended to use Fiebing's Tan-Kote but after finding a YouTube video that compared the water resistant properties of several different products, I decided to try Fiebing's Acrylic Resolene on the bottom panel of the bags - problem is that the Acrylic Resolene gave the leather a shiny / luster appearance (was told Tan-Kote would also give similar result).  Although I did continue to use the Acrylic Resolene to seal up the all the bags' leather edges by using a Q-tip applicator, I finished the the bags' panels up with two coats of PENGUIN brand Water & Stain Repellent - It just sprays on, soaks right in and leaves a natural-looking appearance.  Pictures to follow:

That looks really good!  :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

I'm considering a set of those bags also, do you have yours set up as quick detach? Or are those just mounted on the end of the bolts with the backrest/rack quick detach only? From what I have found, the saddlebag supports 91017-10 are NOT compatible, is this correct?

i added quick release to my saddle bags. here are some pics. when the dealer installed these, I asked for them to be inside the bags. while doing it, he came to me and said if i wanted them inside, they would have to drill new hols in the bags. so i opted for them to be outside. overall i am pleased. they come off and on very easy. overall the look is fine and if i ever decide to put them inside, i can still do it.

Hi.
Many thanks for the update and for posting the new photos, very helpful.
When you had the bags mounted rigid, did you have to remove the axle covers?
I'm asking because Harley Customer Service says the bags won't fit with the axle covers in place.

Cheers, Leroy

On the subject of bags, has anyone fitted the genuine Harley detachable saddlebags to their FXDFSE.
Harley part number 90181-08A.

I'm interested because while I've seen a few pictures of these bags of Fat Bobs, I've not seen any on CVO's.
Harley reckons they won't fit on two counts, one is the axle covers, standard on CVO and the other is that CVO Fat Bobs have the Premium Profile Low Rear suspension kit.  But those shocks are also standard on non CVO FXDFs, so they shouldn't fit either.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers for now, Leroy.

Hi Tony
Thanks for posting the pic of your bike. Nice bike, same color as mine, maybe I'm biased  :).
Interesting to see you have the bags fitting fine with the axle covers and original shocks in place which Harley Australia said can't be done.
End story for me was that based on Harley's advice I didn't buy the bags, (I was after the distressed brown leather).
Good to know they fit so I called Harley who now informs me they are no longer available.
No matter, I'll keep traveling light.

Thanks again, regards, Leroy

LLeroy,
There a bracket added to the bag and a docking pin c\w an adjustable arm added behind the upper shock. You have to replace the stock CVO upper shock bolt with the supplied spacer, bracket arm and docking pin.
