'06 FLHTCUSE Grips Hot
« on: March 04, 2008, 01:56:06 PM »

Hello everyone!  My 2006 FLHTCUSE stock grips seem to be intermittently warming up.  The dial is off and I will be riding down the road with my hands warming up and the grips feeling like the heater is on.  I thought it was maybe me but it never did this until after the very first time I used the heater last fall.  Went out last weekend and for the first 45 minutes my hands were roasting, after that they were not and the grips seemed fine.  Go figure :nixweiss: Anyone experience this or know a fix?

Thanks

A.  Remove old grips
B.  Place in trash can
C.  Install Heat Demons
D.  Install new grips of your choice

                OR

A.  Take bike to dealer (if still under warranty)
B.  Allow trained monkey (tech) to install new set of heated HD grips
C.  Wait a few months for new set to fail, then repeat A - C as needed.

Tom, TC is giving you the correct advice.  Either have the MOCO keep replacing them under warranty (many have had replaced several times-sets) or go the Heat demon route on your own dime.

TC, I've had about enough of your continual bashing here.  When you like something you LIKE it a LOT.  When you hate it it's bash bash bash.  Now quit insulting the monkeys by continually equating them HD service like that.  Monkeys have evolved upwards, dammit!  :huepfenlol2:

Someone needs to edit the service method for the cylinders and the grips.  New last line needs to be "rinse and repeat."

That's why I don't compare the techs to Chimps anymore...they are not quite that high on the evolutionary chain yet... :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:

So far, the Heat Demons have lasted longer than my original grips, plus, it's a lot nicer install, and I love the neat little chrome switch with the LED's...what's not to love?

Besides, it the Heat Demons fail, I can bash you for starting the chit in the first place  ;) :huepfenlol2: :drink:

 Didn't think about that part...

I've become more and more of a fan of these Heat Demons kits also.  Have used them enough know to begin to trust their longevity.  The install is straightforward and as uncomplicated as anything can be that you're stuffing inside the handlebars.  And the final look is good.  That switch system is just sweet.  This is one little addition I'm glad we did.  It's always better when we get to be our own Monkey :mango: .

Thanks everyone.  I never realized the grips were so problematic too.  I'll check out the heat deamons.

It's unfortunately not a new thing Tom.  When they were only accessory offerings before being used as OE equipment on the SEUCs they were known to be terribly failure prone.  Use as OE product on the SEUCs nor a few product revisions of the units themselves seem to have remedied Harley's problems here.  Just another thing they can't quite seem to get right at the percentages modern standards would suggest they should.

Many Interesting threads here on the HD grips bashing. I had never had any problems what so ever with grips (knock on wood) (head) ever failing.

Me neither.  Worked great.  But when I put on the WOs I went with the Heat Demons.  Like the chrome controller and the LEDs plus I hated having to fumble with that dang dial on the end of the left grip.  Only downside to the Demons is that you must re-set the temp each time the ignition is turned off.

I guess I'm just totally fortunate so far.  I've not had any problems with my heated grips through two winters now, nor have I had problems with the cylinder head gaskets.  (knock on Skycuse's head. ;) ;D )

Tom, My second set of grips did the same thing, could barely hold on one day even with my heavy gloves on. Third set has worked great for over a year now.  Dave
