I don't know why yours failed but most on here think the high output starter that you have from Harley is a pretty good unit. I would go back with hd. Fwiw.
Most things I don't go back with hdwhen aftermarket part is better.

Have a friend /wrench that uses one and loves it and has installed in several others that was a year or so ago and he still talks good about them.

The OEM unit is really good, better than the aftermarket offerings IMHO. Most likely your starter is not going out but the starter drive/clutch is the problem. It's about $100 for the new starter clutch and install is easy.

I can't say anything bad about the all balls starter. I've used them in the past. Over the last few years I've stuck with the HD version or a factory replacement.

My 08 Ultra with the 96 has developed a problem with the starter.
When the engine is hot and you hit the start button it will engage for a second or two then grind or sometimes just clunk and grind. It only does it hot and not all of the time. You might try it 3 times and on the 3rd try it will work normal and the bike starts right up. It only needs about 5 seconds of cranking to start.
Suggestions? Starter or bendix or both?

It's very rare for the actual starter motor to fail. It is much less rare for the clutch (drive) to fail. Rather than spend $400 for a starter assembly, spend $100 or less for a replacement clutch.
If you've had issues with the starter drive kicking out or making grinding noises, I'd suggest you pull the outer primary and closely inspect the starter pinion gear and the clutch ring gear for damaged teeth.
Models from 2007 until 2010 that still have the original compensator, or until 2011 for TC96/TC103 Touring models, can have starter engagement and kickback problems related to the POS compensator. If that's the case, replacing the starter drive or the starter assembly won't be a permanent fix until you replace the compensator as well.

Well I got the starter out of the bike today got the clutch in and starter back in the bike, fired right up many time cold and hot so now time will tell will keep you updated thanks for all the help

When that part fails. The starter gear jumps out away from the ring on the clutch hub. When the solenoid fails it makes a clicking noise similar to a low battery or bad cables. If solenoid sticks, it keeps turning over until it kills battery or starter motor

Oh. The bendex gear and clutch ring makes the binding sound.
Replace them at same time. Stay away from the gears with fine teeth. They get chewed up easily.

Back when I had my starter go on my '09, the new starter didn't solve the grinding problem. Replacing the automatic compression releases finally took care of the issue.

Been fighting a start up problem on my 13' for almost a year. All the posts I read was compensator R2 to fix this. I had a feeling it wasn't the comp. My problem was not the same as others it seemed so I kept troubleshooting. I finally stumbled upon a you tube video of someone having the exact same problem as mine and the video had the same problematic sound as mine. The problem was the starter clutch the whole time. With the help of further videos I had the starter out, clutch replaced and back in the bike in 2 hours. Now it starts like it should.
