install aux lamps on SESG2?
« on: August 18, 2010, 04:49:34 PM »

wondering what your thoughts are about installing passing lamps on a new SESG2? will it take the sleek look away, or make it look better? I don't need the lights for night driving, more about the looks for me.

I personally think the spots (passing lamps) are a safety feature that should be on the bike from the factory.  And it has nothing to do with how well I can see, since I don't ride much at night anymore.  It has everything to do with other folks seeing me.  Since I started riding a SEEG with the spots on all the time, I've had a huge decrease in the number of idiots pulling out in front of me or turning in front of me.  If you take note of oncoming e'glides with their spots on, you'll see what I mean about the improved visibility of the bike.  And if you use the same mounting system as the one on the SEEG's, it looks good as well.

Do as Jerry stated and put on the passing lights or put bi-xenon light(s) in the headlight for hi/low beam.

Be a shame to hide so much of that beautiful fairing behind passing lamps.  Motolights are caliper mounted, teardrop shaped (very similar to the turn signals) driving lights w/ 50W bulbs and provide a better light pattern for conspicuity in daytime riding IMO:  https://www.motolight.com/

I wanted to put some up there..........just because my night vision is not what it used to be and so that others would see me easier.  Then I got the HID headlight conversion from Jim.  Don't need them to see better or for others to notice me.  You might want to consider HID.  Pricey but well worth it. :2vrolijk_21:

If you just want to put something up there just to spend money, you might take a look at Headwinds product.......small enough it doesn't cover up the sleek look of the fairing..........  http://www.headwinds.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=headwinds01&Product_Code=2-2404-21CCA&Category_Code=01020201

I agree that the passing lamps are an important safety feature and I will definitly put them on my SESG2.

I wonder how complicated and time consuming the conversion is. Does someone remember? Step by step instructions are welcome!

Which parts are needed for the conversion when I stay with HD parts.

Do I need a separate switch in the fairing ?

What is the writing on the switch, is it the ACC with the green on the bottom, or does it say SPOT, and is there an idicator light on it too?

It is an additional switch that says "SPOT" on it.  The switch has an indicator light when the switch is on.

I was at the dealer yesterday with a list of add-ons for the bike I'll be picking up Monday. Wasn't sure about the looks, but I'm gonna put them on (with the smoked lens and amber bulb) for the safety factor.

While in Sturgis, I saw a SERG with some on the front forks. Not any that have already been referred to here, though. Anyone know what they might be?

It says "spot" and it has an indicator light.

I'd think, in order to save an extra slot on the inner fairing cap, you could use the cruise/spot single switch (with the module) that comes standard on the ultra classics, instead of seperate cruise and spot switches on a street glide.

As delivered, my '10 SESG had "cruise" and "acc" switches. Adding the "spot" switch still leaves on open slot.

but I can foresee the need or convenience for several more switches, in addition to spot, cruise, and Acc.

i understand the function and y'all wanting to be safe and all but...................it's a MOTORCYCLE!   ya kinda throw safety out the window the minute ya get on one ::)

no offense, but on my CVO SESG (imho) it would look retarded.  no way i'd mess up the looks of this bike with "light bars".  if i was that concerned about safety i'd 1 - not ride a motorcycle or 2 - go with the UC!

just my opinion.........enjoy!

Actually, some (many) of us LIKE the look of passing lamps. With lowers, my Spiced Rum is slowly turning into the SEEG I didn't buy and always regretted not owning. But, of course with the new frame, 6 gal. tank, six speed, and ABS brakes. Saving for a chopped tour pak. You'll probably not like that either.

As you say, to each his own.

chacun a son gout - but for me a Harley-Davidson touring bike has passing lamps. Period.

If you ever tried to split up a traffic jam with a Sporty and a Ultra you will know which one does the job better  ;)

A lot of the respect other vehicles, pedestrians and even bicyclists (the modern plague of our roads) pay to Ultras comes from those 3 big lights.

Ditto...my reason for adding them was two fold.  Wanted the extra light (a lot of pitch black country roads up here in new Hampshire) and I liked the looks of three lights on a touring bike.  Trying to understand how these detract the looks of the fairing...90% of the fairing is still completely visible?

I think what you saw was Motolights. They mount on the brake calipers and are bright and draw attention from motorists. I like the fact that they will move from side to side as well as up and down (based on road conditions.) so you get a moving light effect.
The company is great to deal with and they offer a CVO member discount too. (See my thread in the dealer feedback area for info.)

Here is a shot of the motolights on my 2009 SERG :

labcab....a couple HD part numbers (chrome aux passing lamp and turn signal housings )and a couple aftermarket part numbers (lamps/leds). The HD custom aux passing lamp brackets/housings do not come with lamps (spotlights) but do come with a lighted switch which is mounted on your inner fairing cap with the other switches.  HD sells the actual spotlights but I liked the look of the Adjures blue-dots and ordered aftermarket....the same with purchasing led turn signal bulbs. Here is a parts breakdown:

HD Custom Aux Passing Lamp Brackets #69818-06 $299.95
HD Aux Turn Signals/Clear Lens #69229-04 $64.95
Adjure 4 1/2 in "Trillient " Blue Dot Spotlight #T40311 $114.95
Custom Dynamics/LED Turn Signal #GEN200-A-1157E $59.00

Can't answer that without disassembly...but I think not!  First, HD is smarter than that and would not miss the opportunity to stick you for another $64.95.  Secondly, when you order the aux passing lamps the P&A catalog states the aux turn signals are required....that was good enough for me and I purchased them.  However, I did just go into the garage and looked at the stock turn signals I had removed and compared them to the aux turn signals I had the dealer install with the aux passing lamps.  They look very similar,  but not identical....the part of the turn signal housing (the neck) where they actually attach to the brackets looks slightly different.  You might be able to use them with some minor mods but why....I figured I just spent 33K on the bike, whats another 65 bucks.

My tech used the stock turn signals when installing my passing lamps. But, not sure if it required any additional parts/pieces. Your parts guy will know.

The SG bullets work fine in the custom aux passing lamp/turn signal kit.  Whether they are the same p/n or not, I don't know.

HD sells the SG bullet turn signal kit/mouting bracket for non-SG applications in kit p/n 69577-06, and the turn signals in that kit are p/n 69371-06 according to the on-line HD catalog installation instructions and service parts list.

If someone has the SG parts book, they can compare the part numbers for the OEM turn signals to see if they are 69371-06 or not.

In my case, I bought the turn signal kit when I installed the aux custom kit, then re-used the turn signals with the SG brackets, sold the aux custom bracket with the passing lamps, and installed Motolights.

I've read on other forums of non-CVO SG owners re-using their OEM turn signals with the aux passing lamp kit.  Lousy for HD to list the purchase of the turn signal kit as required when the OEM SG turn signals work fine; and, even worse if the parts are identical.

Thanks for all the replies so far.

How long does it take for a mechanic to install the aux.lamps?

Has the fairing to be removed?

Can the aux.lamps be connected with the acc. position of the ignition key?

Aero8

I think they had the Aux Lamps listed at 2 hr install (whether it took 2 hrs is another story)

The fairing does have to be removed to get to the wiring.

Not sure if the Aux lamps can be connected to the acc. position... I would imagine so.

I'm almost certain you can connect the spotlights to the assy switch but the switch which comes with the kit is a lighted switch labled "Spot" .

Thanks for all the help from this community!

Which other modifications makes sense due to the fact that the fairing is off. What would you do on a FLHXSE2?

Hello Fire00d
You are right, I was too unprecise, my english is not as good as my motherlanguage! Sorry for that!

I am focused on small things like illuminated mirrors or a navigation module and other things ( security, visibility, comfort) that can be mounted, when the fairing is off.

I do not plan to convert my Street Glide Kryptonite into a green/black intergalactic battleship in order to attack Cybertron. :coolblue: ;D

It's a good time to change your handlebars if you're so inciined. In fairing antenna perhaps?

If you want to brighten the lighting in the small gauge lights (and many do), WLED-RHP5's for red gauges (don't know if your SESG2 uses red or not) and they won't break the bank:

http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/index.cgi?action=DispPage&Page2Disp=%2F1157.htm

Headlight modulator, in-fairing antenna, different windshield, and the list goes on . . .

you might like to have an AUX-port on the backside of your Radio and have a Navigator connected. In case your planning to get yourself a topcase wiring for additional speakers should be checked ...

I've always thought that the Street Glide's front end looked a little sparse without the passing lamps.  I have an Ultra Glide (so for me it is a moot point), but I think if I had a Street Glide, I would definitely put them on.  There is the safety issue (a single headlight could be a car with a burned out low beam; the addition of the passing lamps firmly establishes it as a motorcycle. ) Plus, it just looks cool...

The minimalist look is part of what makes it a Street Glide? Thats why they make Ultra's too?

I have to admit the Headwinds look cool and I'm all for safety but the Big stodgy lamps belong on the Shriner models.

The Caliper mounted ones actually seem the best location for the purpose!  :2vrolijk_21:

I agree the caliper mounted models would be the best functionally but there is the additional wiring going down the brake line.
I think the Headwinds unit looks the best....  Each their own...

Not a problem, you're welcome.  As you can see I did the spot lamps and the directionals.  They have really attracted much more attention than I would have thought.  Also, I installed 55W bulbs vs. the standard 35W so they are BRIGHT!   :drink:

Mariah Headwinds spot lamps and directionals and Harley headlight trim.  HD trim is $40 vs. Headwinds $500 bezel.  Just could'n justify the bezel price even though the quality is exceptional compared to just the HD trim.  Too many other high priority items on the wish list and not enough $'s to go around for a $500 bezel.   :drink:

It's a lot of money for what it is, but I'm most likely not going to buy a tour pak or change wheels or do Dakota Digitals and the kit I've ordered will go rather nicely with two other mods planned.

I'm in the process of collecting parts in readiness for the change.  I'll happily supply pics towards the end of the Sept.

Thanks for the inspiration.

I just have to put that on my wish list right now.  Still adding trying to pay for the CB upgarde and I haven't even started the project, just ordered materials.

I really have no idea why HD left them off in the first place. First is the safety issue, and I also think they fill out the front end of the bike and make it look more complete. I keep mine on all the time on an 04 SEEG and wouldn't think of ever not riding with them on at all times...  Just want to be seen,, that's all. :nixweiss:

Trwtow, can you post a picture looking straight at the bike, trying to decide 2 things, first how the smaller lights look compared to the bigger harley light and are the headwinds real bright? I had harley lights on my fatboy and they were real bright, lit up the whole lane in front of you. Thanks. ;D

The Headwinds are bright. I have the blacked out led headlight from H-D with the Headwinds running light/turn signal combo on my SESG and they light up the road. I have the H-D led headlight and running lights on my RK and they work great also. The Headwinds definitely are lookers.

I'm debating the headwinds kit $1500.00. But I think you get real chrome with that, not the plastic that Harley sells, cud be wrong tho. Seein how the little green lizard is payin for this I may go that route. Thanks for the spiced rum pics, that's what I have and finally get to see what it looks like with the bigger lights on.

As Skillet's photo shows.......definately a cleaner looking set up than the HD version.  The whole thought behind the Street Glide was "less is better" or "strpped down is the way to go" and so the Headwinds or the Kuryakyn are so much more modern looking than the old fashioned (did I just say that?) Ultra Classic look.

And, after having just rode 727 miles the past two days with somebody that has these lights, you'd be amazed at how much light they put out.  He's riding a SERG with the upgraded bulbs and if I were very far in front of him, all I could see in my mirror is the two outside lower driving lights......very "white" light and very intense.

Sure has me thinking about them.  But I have to really think hard cuz anything I do, I have to do twice (the wife's bike).  In this case, it would be a safety feature.  Even though we both have true HID headlights (twice or three times the stock headlight), we both are getting at the age where driving at night is becoming an issue so there's my excuse. ;)

That bike's lookin good Skillet! :2vrolijk_21:

Headwinds made or modified brackets just for these SESG's and there is still a clearance problem when installing. You'll need to loosen and slide the lowers out as much as needed for clearance. I have no issues now. And again let me say that these lights are bright. Thanks for the compliments.

Well the $500 was tough for me to justify so I know the $1599 could be real hard. Headwinds makes a quality product as you will see in whatever version that you buy. I just think the low profile streamlined look goes with the SESG.

Here's a shot at an angle of the Headwinds running lights and the H-D blacked out LED headlight.

Those are great looking! I'm in...more $$$ :2vrolijk_21:
