I see that they have added ABS on the '08. I wonder if it can be retro fit?

Well, at first glance I see 3 colors:

ghosty/frosty, cherry/frosty, and, to me at least, a septic/turd 105th.

Ok.

They kept their SE 'stripe' theme only on the 105.

Will have to see these in person.  Last year liked the Black/OJ best on the web and then liked the red/black better in person.  Colors are very subjective.

Are those shocks like legends or some other thing?I mean do you adjust them with a switch or you have to pump air in and out manually?

See that they went back to the std tourpack.  Either people complained too much, the leather was more costly to make, or there was too much warranty cost with the puckered leather.    :nixweiss:   No matter what the reason, the regular tourpack looks good to me.

I think its red and silver; however, I believe it would be better looking if it were red and white, or red and beige.
Hmmm, maybe I could repaint the silver..........

I love the power locks on the 07's, but a remote key fob would be wonderful...I am going to wear out my switch turning it on and off to activate the locks...  how much won't matter much to me.... :2vrolijk_21:

Doubt it. One would have to guess that since it's on the V-Rod, it has been shrunk drastically and stuck someplace more discreet than the bags.

I'm thinking that is why only a 40 watt stereo is offered! The ecm for the brakes is under the tour pak, where the amp is on the 06 and 07.

The press release says that ABS will be an option for all touring models though.  Not all touring models have a tour pak.  The leather tour pak shown with the SE Road King is a detachable.  So it's a good bet the ABS hardware isn't under the tour pak on that bike.

This sounds interesting:

"New dual control heated seat with passenger backrest and complementary adjustable rider backrest "

I remember being in Daytona and one of the CVO reps came over and asked me a whole bunch of questions about my seat.

This is going to be cool:

"New power locking system with remote/barrel key fob"

I guess this means the key is intergrated into the fob with a button in the center. Too cool... I want one.

I wonder if the ABS is going to take up a good portion of the saddlebag?

Just read this article (link for cite at bottom).  Control unit under right side cover.  Front and rear brakes not linked. Rotation sensors in magnetic spacers next to wheel bearings.  Lots of good detail here:

The Harley system maintains separate operation of front and rear brakes. Steel braided lines run unobtrusively from both master cylinders to a controller unit located under the right side panel, then back to the brake rotors. If the wheel sensors detect lockup, the control unit pulses the brakes up to seven times per second to prevent the wheels from locking up.

As with the throttle, Harley paid a lot of attention to the styling, as well as the performance. You have to look carefully, and know where to look, to see any visual evidence of the ABS system. Not only are the additional brake lines well hidden, but Harley also put great effort into making the wheel sensors unnoticeable.

"It's totally invisible and that was an important part of the system," said Harley Director of Product Communications Paul James.

The sensors operate using magnetically encoded rings in the wheel bearings. Harley showed us the parts to demonstrate how they work. The two metal rings look like thin spacers. I let them clamp together by magnetic force and turned one with my hand. The two rings "click" in steps as the magnetically encoded spots interact. That's what sends signals to the ABS control unit without the need for a big, external sensor that would detract from Harley's traditional styling. Looking at the wheel alone, there's no way to tell if the motorcycle has ABS or not.

I'm thinking that is why only a 40 watt stereo is offered! The ecm for the brakes is under the tour pak, where the amp is on the 06 and 07.

Advanced Audio System by Harman/Kardon with CD/AM/FM/XM/WB radio receiver, CB/Intercom, amplifier, navigation system and front and rear speakers.

ABS is under the right side cover and the Key Fob for the locking is seperate from the security Key Fob, what fun, 2 Key Fobs for one bike....Model Year Tech Info is at the link below...

http://www.box.net/shared/tjuvmyyybz

Motor mount changes, tank won't retrofit to older bikes, seats won't' fit anything earlier......electronics moved around........calipers can't be rebuilt.....

Looks like the Legend Air suspension folks need a new location for their air compressor to mount....

After looking at the technical papers, it looks like 2008 will be a very expensive year for the aftermarket. Man, did they ever stir the pot. It looks like the exhaust manufacturers weren't affected, but Mustang and Corbin have a lot of work to do.

Speaking of the battery, you can't even see it. Although the idea of top posts sounds really good to me. The stupid wire troughs on the 07's made removal of the neg terminals a total PITA!!!!

Noticed in one of those papers it was mentioned that the Brembo calipers aren't rebuildable. Not sure how often a caliper would need to be rebuilt, but the thought of not having the ability to rebuild them and buying another one sure adds to maintenance cost.

Owners can't even bleed their own brakes with the ABS.....Digital Tech II is required.....is anyone outside the MoCo sphere able to purchase the Digital Tech??  Or will owners be required to allow some moron with a 2nd grade education to bleed the brakes on his $36,000 motorcycle...

That boggles the mind a bit.  Wonder if that's some CYA specification of if they really did something completely weird?  Gettign less and less interested all the time though.

If the MOCO made all these changes to the frame, it might make a safe bet the air cooled Vtwin may be around for a couple more years for this type investment?    :nixweiss:

The only way I can see of easily and most cost effective way of putting ABS on an earlier bike would be salvaging the parts from a wrecked bike?

This is another excellent reason to forget about ever thinking about this conversion. Can't lay the bike down when you have to, only the dealer can work on it. Sounds like a good set of PM, Hawg Halter or Brembo calipers are in order and that's it. Lyndall or Traxxion pads on these calipers should be all the brakes we need! ;) Hoist! 8)

Any bets on what the other downside issues on the new ABS will be?

It will be interesting to see an independently conducted, side by side comparison stop test under both dry and wet conditions.  That is what people are most interested in as far as ABS goes, and magazines likely have them scheduled already.

This part already bothers me....from the Service-Tools file in the link above.....so if I hit one of them stupid stop sign areas where they put the bumps in the road to warm me of the upcoming stop....I may not be able to stop...forget that....

Symptom::
No braking over a series of ripples
or bumps

Condition::
Normal operation - speed of ABS reaction interfacing with frequency of road conditions
signaling wheel lock up

Thanks.  There is a reaason some law enforcement depts. are not continuing with ABS on bikes.  Road conditions such asripples (rain grooves even?) might prove to be more challenging instead of less so.

"a series of ripples

Here in OK, we call that a new road!!  And that's why I HATE abs on any vehicle!!!!  It's only good when your on smooth roads with slick surfaces, the rest of the time it will kill you.

I wonder how long before they release touring pull back bars that accept the fly by wire throttle?
Or do you think since the throttle stuff is all inside the bars, that any bars will work, as long as you can extend the fly by wires.

Is that what this says in the earlier review:

"The handlebar is internally wired with new Electronic Throttle Control for sleek looks and a new stabilizer system reduces engine vibration. Adjustable air deflectors on the fairing also improve rider and passenger comfort."

Or are they referring to the Cruise?

Great to hear.  When is the projected arrival date?

Regarding the deflectors, I guess that when they did away with the outer frame of the wing like the Kuryakyn has, they  needed the additional support.  My RH Kuryakyn frame cracked right above the upper screw as the rh Kuryakyn does not fit quite as well as the lh..

I like the bike, and the direction they are going in. However, being a long time Harley owner, I think I'll wait and see if there are any issues like excessive heat, noise, vibration, wobble, clatter, tuning capabilities, and stuff like that. I'm guessing it won't be too long till the aftermarket catches up and starts selling the HD ABS brake bleeding system tool and stuff like that.

Especially paying through the nose for the last CVO Ultra that was supposed to be made for at least 2 more years. I did expect their to be a EG CVO, But not a SEUC3? OK, I admit to being a new lurker. Have you guys seen this color combination live? My Brother has this color combo coming in sometime in September, but it's my least favorite...but that's just from the pictures on the website and the two that I can find look different from each other. He said he might be able to trade for a Copper Canyon, but not sure what to do....decisions decisions.

They probably got tired of warranty them.  Could be because of the throttle by wire too.

I thought it was because of the new ETC, but I just checked the P&A and see there are -08 heated grips listed for the 08's only. They're $10 more than the pre-08's.

Modified: Oops, wrong again - Heated grips are Std equipment on the CVO Ultra.

Labrat...you can go to the pictures portion of this site and see actuall photographs from the dealer show of the new colors.  The canyon copper is really orange in the photos and the dash of the white one really sets it apart (along with the pearl color).

The photos are much different than what we see on the factory website and they'll probably be even different in person.

I see that they have added ABS on the '08. I wonder if it can be retro fit?

I wouldn't bother. I drove a HD police bike with ABS & wasn't impressed. Plus they whine a fair bit.

I wouldn't think any experiences with the old system can be transferred to the new system. New controller, new brakes, new sensors, etc.

I myself am looking forward to jump on one and see just what it is that I can't get for my bike.  I hope my local dealer will have one to rent so I can try it out for a day.

Maybe my impression will change once I ride one, but right now, Brembo ABS sounds pretty darn good to me.

I wonder how long before they release touring pull back bars that accept the fly by wire throttle?
Or do you think since the throttle stuff is all inside the bars, that any bars will work, as long as you can extend the fly by wires.

Did not notice from the 08 spec's.  Do they also have heated grips?  Wonder if the module/controller/thingie in the right grip will take up enough space that heated grips might not be an option?

I'd be interested in feeling it too Chuck.  Have ridden a Wing with ABS a few times.  Once you get past the mental thing that keeps your brain from telling your hands and feet to try to lock it up I've actually been impressed with the way that system worked.  Not that I'd expect Harley to really get it right the first time.  But still interested in seeing what it is and what it feels like.

One of the reviews posted on Monday described the ABS and what it felt like in its use. I can't find that link. The reviewer said the thumping in the pedal was pretty significant.

I have a BMW R1200C With ABS brakes. And I have to tell you that they are the BEST brakes that I have ever had! However, I agree w/Twolane that it will probably take HD
Several attemps to get brakes that good!
IMHO, There is no way a human w/regular brakes can stop as fast or as safe with ABS system of BMW.

I wonder if they did away with the heated grips BECAUSE of the new wired throttle?  Interference from the grips perhaps?  Surely they would run shielded wire for the throttle, but one never knows.

Last night spoke to the sales manager of the local HD dealer in regard to the HD dealer show ABS demo in Nashville.

Said it was VERY impressive.  One bike, no ABS, set up with booms, and on a hard stop on rocks it slid & would have gone over without the booms.

Other bike, with ABS & boom, same hard stop over rocks - stopped very well as expected with no problems.

Then they had an engineer do a hard stop with an 08 Ultra with ABS & no boom over rocks.  No problem - no control issues - good stop.

Does not appear to be something that can be easily retrofitted to older models.

A video of the ABS on the HD website seems to be almost inevitable.  I realize test conditions are in a controlled environment and yadda yadda, but it appears the MoCo has an ABS system that performs very well.  Guys on BMWs I ride with for the most part love their ABS and mention some of the road vibration issues that can cause problems similar to the ones noted by others re: road conditions.

Not related to SEULTRA, but my friend also said the Rocker is a heck of a bike - very impressive in person.  Its the Deuce replacement.

I am just saying this. The abs system will fail at some point and time. I hope when it does fail it will not be when you really need it.
That could get ugly.  :-X  I think your money could be better spent taking a advanced course and learn how to stop the bike with non abs brakes. I have been using abs systems in aircraft for over 35 years, and they are great when they work. But when they fail the ---- can hit the fan. On a motorcycle you could be on your side before you could do anything about it. I guess what I am really saying is I want control of my motorcycle at all times. Old school  :drink: Remember air bags were great until people started getting killed by them.

Harley has just invented (their version) of ABS  all they need is more folks to buy it so they can improve on it to Honda and BMW standards- after inventing the 3 Pistion Discbrake in 1999 that has evolved into the 1980 disc brake system that they have now, Keep on testing them and before you know it you won't be able to tell it from a Honda or BMW as the ABS system that I have had since 02 allows me to stop on any surface with or with out bumps.

Tough choice but I made it

I choose to take a pass on 2008 SEUC, as I had 1st dibs at a local HD store, on a Sept/07 delivery 105 Anniversary SEUC
This years scoots just don't get me excited and I really wasn't that impressed with the 105 anniversary paint
No I didn't see the 105 anniversary paint on a CVO however, I did on a Softail and it didn't get me all warm and fuzzy
So if my mind doesn't change I guess my ole 06 Autumn Haze SEUC will have to last me another year

Jeff, I agree.  I do not like the Copper (I will call it BROWN).
The "red" and "white" version are better but if you look at the front fender paint it is odd how they sculpted the paint...almost clown like.
Anyway, since I just found the low mileage SEUC I am happy to keep it and I am much more comfortable with the leather tp than before.....for old guys it just takes time.  So in a few months the 08's will likely look better.

 :carrot:

I have first dibs on a 105 SEUC due in on 9-7-07, and or any other color that will come along if I don't like the Copper / Black bike.

As a gear head all of the new technology gets me excited and my local dealer and friend treats me very well on my trades. If the Copper / Black looks good and the bike feels right, I'm in for the 6 gallon gas tank alone! ABS is awesome, my friends BMW is the only bike I have rode with it and liked it. He will never buy anothr bike without ABS and he swears by it.

As usual, this year’s scoots just don't get me too excited when looking on the web; however, as in the past they look totally different in person. I really did not like the paint on both my 2006 & my current 2007 but they both grew on me and I can't tell you how many times people have raved over the paint jobs. I'm an old hot rod guy and to me everything is right in the world with a good old fashioned flamed paint job on it. All this hi-tek paint is nice but I would like to see a paint job like their "California Kid" paint available from the factory.

I have the "California Kid" paint on my 04 Heritage and it is aweome in Yellow.

How about Carrot for the nickname of the new 105 SEUC? :carrot: :carrot:

Casper is a go for the white silver on in my book!

Andy you are right ....sorry.  AND folks I just saw in person the 105 paint scheme at my local dealer. IT was on a 08 softail deluxe and I have to admit it looks MUCH, MUCH better in person.  Still can't tell how it will look on the Ultra but that copper color is indeed copper and really stands out in the light.  So l apologize and retract my statements earlier..   Next time I will keep my fat mouth shut til I see something in person. :cherry:
My dealer thinks that many will complain about the new seats on the touring bikes because the 6 gallon tank took some seat space that previous bikes had.  Other than that he believes the 08's will be widely well received.
New p/a catalog is available.

Chuck, not sure. They did have one touring bike there and it had the new calipers but I did not check for the abs...sorry.  The handle bars looked almost naked without the cables.
BTW, the new quick disconnect lower fairing set up is neat.  It can be bought as a kit for $89 and you can buy the soft bags to store them in for $79.  I took off the lowers on my 05 SEEG yesterday and will keep it that way.....it is now a cherry street glide !

I wonder how long it will be until they have some rentals to try out? Maybe Earls will get one?

I have a BMW R1200C With ABS brakes. And I have to tell you that they are the BEST brakes that I have ever had! However, I agree w/Twolane that it will probably take HD
Several attemps to get brakes that good!
IMHO, There is no way a human w/regular brakes can stop as fast or as safe with ABS system of BMW.

Don't you think that would depend on the Human element and the bikes that are being ridden on???
I've pulled up short an "01" GL1800 without ABS when I thought there wasn't any room at 70 mph.
I tried it once with my "07" Jester, rear tire always talked to me. Bikes pretty much weight the same. The only differences were the back tires.
Thought to think about.

Vag...the other big difference is the front end suspension on a GL compared to an Ultra.  All the weight on the Ultra gets transferred to the front wheel when you get on the brakes hard because the suspension collapses.   The GL, while not perfect in that regard, is better.

Regardless of all of this, averaged across all riders, bikes with ABS produce shorter stops. Of course a professional rider could probably stop just as short, or shorter, but that is the exception.

When we go to Sturgis and get stuck in the parade riding Needles Highway or Iron Mountain Road and you see the new riders out there afraid to lean through a turn, I wish they would have ABS.

There are hundreds of thousands of riders out there who need ABS. With the 08 touring bikes, some of them will now be able to get it.

Totally agree, Chief....Hardly anybody is able to stop as quickly as ABS allows.  When anyone, regardless of experience, gets into TRUE panic mode stopping, it's hard to make the brain do what it needs to do unless you've practiced an awful lot.  We'd probably all be shocked at how many riders are out there who do not utilize their front brakes as much as they should.  A lot also don't have a clue about countersteering, or at least are not concious of it.

Since I put the new pads on I got from Traxxion, I've been really working on stopping quick, because now its so damn fun. The difference is that I'm stopping when I want to, where I want to. It's all planned out, there isn't any panic involved and reaction time isn't an issue.

Now, in a real emergency, every single one of those points is the opposite of reality.

 :drink:

Was up at the lake this weekend and stopped in at the local HD dealer and they had 5 new 2008's in stock  The Copper and black looked real nice on the two Dyna's they had in stock, a Super Glide and a low rider. Both seats had a copper insert in the middle of the seats, and 105 anniversary badges.

They also had a new Dark Blue Pearl Ultra and the salesman I know let he inspect it and sit on it. He claimed that the bike had ABS, but I could not find one thing that looked like ABS except for a newer style brake reservoirs. HD did a great job on hiding everything. Let's hope it works as well as they hid it!
I sat on the bike and the seat was very comfortable and my position felt correct.  Tank looks a little bigger and the center console and fuel door is somewhat different and sculpted.  Handlebars look a little naked with out the throttle cables.

All in all, first impression was good; however, I would need a couple hundred miles on the seat to let you know.

I've got a deposit on one of the Anniversary Ultras, so I'm hoping that the look is good.  I like what I see in some of the photos posted from publications.  The color on the "Anniversary" CVO bikes appears to be different than the copper on the other '08 line up.  The "Anniversary" CVO units have "Crystal Copper" and the rest of the line up is a "Copper Pearl."  In the light inside the dealership the Copper Pearl was a little too "orange" looking for my taste.  Someone described the CVO Crystal Copper as looking more like root beer.  I notice that the black is described as "Black Onyx" rather than the typical "Vivid Black" and I'm not sure what kind of difference can be seen in the black color.

Ok.

They kept their SE 'stripe' theme only on the 105.

Will have to see these in person.  Last year liked the Black/OJ best on the web and then liked the red/black better in person.  Colors are very subjective.

Stopped at my local dealer yesterday and they gave me a very nice color brochure for the 08 SEEG.. I Gotta tell you that the colors in the brochure sure make the bikes look awesome. Full page color shots and they look great.  I have first dibs on a 105 Copper bike due in on 9/7 and a White / Silver due in on 8/17.   If they look as good in person as they do in the brochure, I think we will all be happy.  Go get your brochure today and see for yourself.

Or a lack of company willingness/effort to make a change.  The platform generally has been a big hit though.  The SEEG's before the SEUC's were all snapped up.  The SEUC's seem to be much the same. Will be interesting to see now if a third year of the same platform is a bridge too far or if they keep right on selling as quickly as they get in to dealerships.

My new '08 USE3 is scheduled to be built Aug. 1st.  I'm getting the anniversary one.  Personally, I think the colors are totally awesome.  Also, I wasn't a fan of the leather tour pac.  The reason I traded was for the beautiful colors of this bike, the king tour pac, the 110 engine, and the 6 speed tranny.  This is finally the bike I plan to keep.  ABS braking has saved my butt more than once in other vehicles, and I can think of one bike accident I had where it would have saved me if I would have had it.

The only thing I hate to see is that the bikes are changing so much every year that it is destroying used bike values, and the planned obsolescence is painfully obvious.

On the new bikes it appears the tranny needs fixing and the bike runs too hot.  I hope I'll be happy, but I realize it may cost me a few thousand extra to fix these problems.  I would think the moco would be ashamed to produce expensive machines that need fixing before you can enjoy them.  Also, I can't seem to get good service work from my dealer.  My '06 USE still has a problem with the radio that was there when I traded.  Unfortunately I live where I have no other choice for service.  The service dept. just doesn't do a good job, and they act like they are sooo busy all the time.

Hopefully I'll enjoy my new bike.  -Retail & Steve

In regards with the lost value you speak of. I do not think you are correct. Not everbody wants abs brakes. Not ever body wants a tour pak that looks like all the others. Not ever body want a bike that runs hot and has 6 speeds. I do hope you in-joy you new bike.

Its like buying a computer.  As soon as you buy one, something new and improved comes out.  You chase the tail and it never wags.  Just pick the one you want and ride it.

I have an old antiquated '06 with no GPS, no ABS, no HOT 110, only 5 little gears and I  :2vrolijk_21: ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS BIKE  :2vrolijk_21:

The new ones that have been coming out are great machines, but so are the old ones.  My favorite car of all time is still a 1957 Chevy.  Would rather ride it than a 2007 Corvette, without question.

i'm at 15627....over two years old!

But the 2006 Ultra has 41000 so I think it all balances out!

You guys haven't even got those trucks off the lot!!!  I've got 210k on mine and it's still going strong, but it's only now 8 yrs old!  I'll definitely say the HD interior looks better than the KR interior.  The leather looks like it would hold up better.  That's only if the MOCO had nothing to do with it, of course!!!
