stumped on fxr4
« on: November 08, 2009, 06:57:34 PM »

today on probably the last good day here in illinois to ride, my wife and i pulled over to take a break. When we were ready to continue...bike wouldnt start? i got a jump.and it got us home!!!! but................my speedo was stuck on 50 mph and the odometer did not work. i did a couple of days ago hook up the battery to a charger because i had taken it out for the winter. thought it would be good. if it didnt hold a charge does that mean it is the battery or the bike? never had a problem before. and what gives on the speedo and odo? also just wanna through this in...is there a fix for the rubber trim that goes around the dash panel....wont stay on. bike is a 2000 fxr4.
thanks,

Sounds like either a bad ground or a bad battery ?

You don't won't to get rid of it, the chrome will contact the paint.

Take the console off.  Get a tube of 3M Super Weatherstrip adhesive.  It is black.  Slide a screwdriver to spread the channel open as you apply the adhesive, very little is needed.  Put the trim on and leave it overnite. Any areas that don't want to stay in place you can ues masking tape to hold it or even clothes pins 9spring type) will do the trick.  Paint thinner will remove excess glus before it sets.  you can scrape it off when set from the chrome.  I've done several bike this way including a Deuce.

I took the rubber trim off my fxdl. I think it looks better. My 2 cents, Dennis

i traced the problem down to a bad contact point. as for the rubber strip on the dash....i bought a new one and will recondition the old original one just in case i ever need it or ever sell the bike.
thanks for the replies
