This may be what you get for riding a BMW. :nervous: From his Facebook post:
With 260 miles to make Albuquerque heavy wind blew me into center ditch 16 miles east of Amarillo Texas. Very fortunate to get away with only five cracked ribs. Opening to be out of the hospital in two or three days. Looking forward to my return to Albuquerque.
Please send him prayers (if that's your thing) and good thoughts.

Will do Greg.

Damn, sad to hear. Hope he heals up nice and quick. I know all too well that that section of highway just plain sucks. Miles and miles of windmills and not a single damn windsock on the highway to give you a heads up.
-
Thanks for sharing Greg. Hate to hear this but glad he's ok!
That must have been one heck of a wind gust to move that dude like that.

Contrary to popular belief larger people have more mass for the wind to hit, smaller frame people have less mass for the wind. Larger people = more area for wind to effect. I have felt the strong winds and the smaller people I was riding with were not bothered.
Get healed quick Simon. Prayers your way.

Prayers your way Simon, hope you feel better & get home soon.
Have been blown to the shoulder more than a few times out on the western plains. It's a bad feeling and with sudden gusts/downbursts is very hard to impossible to maintain control. Amarillo is a windy place usually. Dangerous sometimes.
-
So sorry to hear you went down Simon! Praying it's just the cracked ribs and that you'll be out in a couple days as expected so you can be home for your birthday! Gods sweet love and blessings Simon! Love ya man! :2vrolijk_21:

The weather's been crazy everywhere, so I can only imagine what the flats of Texas are like. I'm glad he was so close to Amarillo.
I know about those desert winds. Drove thru a dust devil with next to no warning that hurled a rock into my full-face helmet. Sounded like a gunshot. It startled me so bad I almost lost control. I can only imagine what an unexpected straight line wind could do.
Get well soon, Simon! Prayers are on the way!

Sorry to hear you went down Simon. The last couple days has been insane wind-wise across the south. Thinking of you and hoping you have a speedy recovery mate.
Cheers Tom

Get well soon. Wishing you a speedy recovery. . Stuart.

Get well Simon.
Greatful you didn't get seriously hurt. But those ribs will certainly feel like it's as serious as anything else. Easy does it.
-
Nothing can describe riding 500 miles in "sideways winds" and then the gusts hit! So sorry you went down, Simon. Prayers for your healing and getting back home soon, brother.
-
I have never been pushed off the road that must be one heck of a wind! Glad there was only minor injuries and I guess the bike is basically OK? Heal quickly!
-
Simon,
I'm very sorry to hear you went down. I am praying you have a speedy recovery my friend. I am sure those ribs are extremely painful. I spent over a week helping my wife in an out of Bed, in and out of a chair and so on March 9-20. She went down on I-75. She has 3 broken ribs and the same side broken clavicle and wrist.
We are both praying you heal quickly and the worst of the rib pain goes away soon.

Simon,

For those not familiar with riding in this area or in any high wind area, I'll share a story.
We do a poker run out of Guymon, OK and its a bigger run - usually a couple thousand bikes on it. A few years back there was a bad wreck with multiple bikes down on a very rural road. One of them was an old boy on one of those Can Am Spyders. It tossed that Spyder like it was nothing. He came off it in the road, and it wound up probably 50' off the road in a field. On top of that, no one had any cell service so we couldn't call for help. Luckily there were a couple of crotch rockets that were stopped to help too so we asked them if they could help us out and be careful but expedite a ride to the next town to get some help and even then it took over an hour for some rigs to finally show up.
I remember assisting with it and the old mans son also went down. He was on a Dyna and he had some broken legs but he could speak and he told us that the wind just picked up the everyone, spun them just a bit, and then dropped them all back down onto the road. I'll never forget that conversation. Basically what happened was everyone in that group took a instant high side at about 65mph as soon as they came back down onto the pavement.
The wind in that area can be very violent. Tossing a motorcycle, or even a trike, is nothing.

Yeah, I rode in that wind in the desert out there. It's so flat in place the wind has nothing to stop it. 5 cracked ribs nothing to laugh about being very painful. Glad you will are able to talk about this so to speak. Get well soon.
-
Hoping for a fast recovery and back in the wind Simon.
-
There's nothing like a few broken ribs to make you appreciate taking a deep breath. Advice: Don't cough!
Praying for a swift recovery.

Thanks for all the well wishes. Luckily I was back on the road again in about 8 weeks. Hard to keep this big guy down. Got myself a replacement bike and I've ridden 31k so far this year including a trip to Alaska. Pictures posted on FB for those who don't mind looking at a BMW. :P
