I started my day today with a 14 mile run. After my post run coffee I cleaned myself up and Gina and I took the 2013 CVO Road Glide down to Pocono Mountain Harley Davidson. We made our way to the back office of the general manager Ty. He was who I was texting and receiving pictures from while he was at the dealer show. He was aware of my interest in a new CVO Road Glide or Road Glide Special. Luckily there was an 18 CVO Road Glide so it was just a matter of choosing a color. Gunship Gray peaked my interest as it is different and a departure from my orange bike collection. Before Ty left the dealer show I had committed to taking one with the only thing pending was the availability and time frame. Once in his office we found out we are getting the first CVO to roll into the dealership and it just happens to be a Gunship Gray CVO Road Glide. There wasn't much haggling as they are a MSRP dealership so there was no markup. I asked to loose the freight and prep and it took him all of a second to say OK. We moved on to the important stuff, when will we see it. This bike has a ship date of September 29th. He's guessing a day or two on the road and a day or two once they get it to set it up. Barring any delays we will have this bike for Daytona Biketoberfest this year.

Mike,
Congrats! I guess I will need to adjust my vision for Biketoberfest to the New bike! Looking forward to seeing the modification process your ride will undergo.

Very cool Mike. I actually like the color. It doesn't scream out "CVO" to me in any way but it's a color I like. You could name it the USNM Puzzled :huepfenlol2: !
Now the curiosity kicks in. What happens to it first?
-
congrats :2vrolijk_21: cant wait to see the new bike, and watch it get its own personality. as always :worthless:

I really thought I liked the Orange Lava but the Gray is speaking to me. The color matched wheels and "onyx??" exhaust color on the Gunship is very unique. Funny, when I first viewed all three colors I was relieved that I didn't like them....I might be in trouble.
-
Saw a gunship gray CVO Street Glide today. Looks great in person. Dealer markup is $5K though.
-
My son saw the grey in person up in LA and said it "looked crazy sick". I think that is a good thing...
-
One just showed up in NH, both the all gray and orange/gray

the one thing I've noticed that no one has remarked on, "I started my day today with a 14 mile run..."
if I've got to go 14 miles, I have a truck or a bike for that.... :2vrolijk_21:
[though I do have to admit, while in the army I hated running. but now that i'm retired (and broken), I wouldn't mind a little jog now and then. unfortunately, not happening]
-
Sounds awesome. Maybe I'll see it at Biketoberfest. Congrats :2vrolijk_21:
-
Thank you all for the congrats.
I'm starting to picture a direction for this bike in my head. I'll be dialing it back a little from my 13.
The very first part I ordered was a simple set of OEM switch covers in black. Yes the bike comes with them however I'll be painting this set. Looking at the bars it is all black so it needs something to break it all up. I have some other pieces that will be getting body color and a few that will be getting the rocker box color. I have something subtle in mind for the stock bags until I change them for something deeper. I've narrowed the wheel size down to two. I need to do some more research before I make a final decision. The radio will stay, amp and speakers will all go.

I turn 50 in December and would like to run a 50k Ultra for my 50th. So I'm logging miles to see how my legs and knees will hold up. 16 miles on the schedule for this Saturday. I'm camping Saturday so I may not go that far. Possibly a couple of 10 milers back to back days... I'm going to try and do this Ultra...
-
"I'll be dialing it back a little from my 13."
Yeah...Riiiiiight! :D
Can't wait to see how this turns out...eyeing the same gray Road Glide myself, just haven't decided to pull the trigger yet (but very tempted).

Going to my local Dealer, who I have bought my wife and my last 13 bikes from today. He is also MSRP. They Gunship grey CVO RG come in this morning. I'm first on list. Have to see it before I commit. I really like the black earth and vidid black.
Congrats on the new bike.

Wow Dave...I didn't know the dealerships sold wives! You'd think if you bought a wife, and 13 bikes, they'd at least give you a little off MSRP!
LOL

Very nice. Congratulations. I'm trying hard to decide if that is the one I want or the Gunship Gray. It's tough to decide when you can't see them both before you have to decide. Saw the Gunship yesterday and will again this morning

That is an awesome color combo and would be my first choice, I heard somewhere that there is a green hue to the Black Earth on that bike. Is there and is it noticeable??

Thanks for all the great pics. What windshield are you thinking about? I've had such good experience with John at Freedom Shields that I ordered a dark gray sport touring from him for the new Road Glide that I have on order.
-
Liking those 'crate' pics. Really gives perspective to the front wheel IMO. Thanks for posting.
-

I'm a Windvest fan, I've been running them since 2001. I still need to determine the correct height. 4" above the fairing is my ideal height. Now I have to translate that windshield height.
-
I go to pull the windshield off tonight and found whomever installed the windshield cross threaded one of the screws. In an attempt to get the screw out it pulled the brass insert out. I removed the outer fairing to see where the insert goes. It is part of the speaker enclosure. I called the dealer to notify them of the issue and to let them know I'll be stopping by. So the bike is apart, I have to put it together to at least get it to the dealer for them to look at. Let me see what I can do.... I used a tap to clean the threads in the brass insert. I used two part epoxy to put the brass insert back in the plastic enclosure. If it doesn't hold I'll file a warranty claim.
-
With the fairing still on I couldn't tell what the insert was inserted into. What you are looking at is the speaker enclosure.
-
The pieces....
-
While apart I poked around a little to see what is in there. 6.5" front speakers. That'll be an easy change.
-
Not a lot of room in there....
-
Same thing happened on my ‘16. I used jb weld on mine because the moco hadn’t started making the replacement brass piece yet. I would ask the dealer if those replacements ever got created. They’ve had them for the bat wings for years, but as you can tell, they are different sizes.

I can do that. I simply want the dealer to note the issue should the epoxy not hold up over the length of the warranty.

Put a windshield on my the day I bought it. That thing that comes with it is worthless.

Thanks for the photos, good luck!

Put me down as number three. Was demoing some windshields at my local dealer and on the second one, boom. Spinning brass. We managed to get the screw pretty much seated but the dealer ordered a new speaker enclosure for me just to be safe. So it looks like I’m getting an extended demo on the KlockWerks 14” flare. Of course, we’re expecting rain all week...

Those bolts really look amazing, is there a pre-made kit for that?
I finally saw the Gunship Gray on a SERG today. Much nicer and darker in person than the pics portray!
What exhaust is going back on Mike??
-
Awesome mike...👍🏾👍🏾
-
That's a good look Mike. Have 12 pt chrome used on all possible fasteners on my Road King. Just hope we never break down away from home and in a place where someone doesn't have 12 pt sockets. Actually that's ok too. Set of 12 pt sockets and wrenches in the bottom of the saddlebag.
Looks good! :2vrolijk_21:

There is somewhat of a kit. I ordered all that they had listed than used the parts manual to order what wasn't included...

A cruise down Main Street Daytona.

Ordered my plate for the 18.
-
I did briefly consider something different however why???
-
I think I'm going to go with my first side exit exhaust. I've done all I could with the Fullsac set up to get some sound out of it. It's just too quiet.
Freedom performance exhaust HD00638 is the one I'm looking at.

How do you get a picture on Main Street with no other bikes, go at 0700? That is a good proof, you posted, I see why your getting it.

how big is this one? did I miss where you said it somewhere?

Hey Mike I rode one of those couple of weeks ago at a demo day and then got on an Ultra. Man it felt like the 21" made that bike ride ruff. What do you think?
BigLew

BigLew
BigLew I don't think it is the 21" that is causing the rough ride. I think the entire bike rides rough. I attribute this to the lowered front and rear suspension. They lowered the bike thus giving up suspension travel. If I were to keep it stock-ish I'd be changing the front springs and oil weight. For the rear it may be possible to dial in these shocks, if not a good set of rear shocks.
With that said my 13 30" full air bike rides considerably better than my 18. Enough so that I parked the 18 mid week and got back on the 13 while in Daytona.
-
I'm close with the paint match. We'll pull some pearl out and a little of the black out.
-
Hey Mike I noticed the same thing my 18 is a tough ride compared to my 15 CVORG I'm deciding what to do keep me posted how is my linkage doing?
-
Mike I see from your post in the selling board your bike is naked (or going to be soon) now :D... waiting on some updates to this thread of the transformation.

Hey can you let me know what bolt kits you are using. I had a Harley kit on mine and while in Florida last month the rusted to hell.

Looks great so far, Mike. Always fun to follow your bike modifications.
The exhaust looks great but why in the world did they put those adjustment/fitment screws right on top and silver? They stick out like a sore thumb and youda thunk they would have designed it for a smoother look. I'm sure you have a solution, however.... :2vrolijk_21:

Compared to Mike, everyone is a slacker. I have done Hiway pegs, rider back rest, CB, Yaffe Stealth III plate frame, Custom dynamic turn signals, Yaffe 14" apes, Klock works windshield and a brake light strobe. Also Fullsac baffles.

Lol
I had most of this planned. I just didn't know if I was going to purchase a CVO or a Special.
-
I was in the garage for a few hours this morning. I am using the American Suspension bolt on kit. I also went with the AS front air ride pistons and their lower legs with internal fender mounts.
-
178
The neck kit went on easily. I like how it secures to the bike compared to the previous versions I've used.
-
179
The front end is on. I have to find my loc-tite and tighten everything up. This afternoon I hope to get the bars and inner fairing back on. I'll use a test wheel to set the fender. That should get me to where I wanted to be, everything ready to go to paint.
-
All the work has made me curious Mike. Given the quantity of changes have you run the numbers to see if you'd have been money ahead starting with a non-CVO rather than a CVO model to get to your desired end-product?
-

Without a doubt... I enjoy being a CVO owner though. I would have wished I purchased a CVO if I hadn't. A Road Glide Special would have just been a modified bike. The CVO will remain a CVO although super sized... :2vrolijk_21:

It looks like the fairing will sit roughly 2" forward from stock and about 1 1/2" higher. This may allow me to use a stock RGS Windshield.

So is that a 30" tire leaning up against your car in the background? Maybe a 26"? And is that what's going on the new CVO?

So is that a 30" tire leaning up against your car in the background? Maybe a 26"? And is that what's going on the new CVO?
Oh, by the way it looks like your going for a "KILLER" stereo!! :bananarock:
That is a 26". I have three bikes with 26" wheels. For me they work well. When the Metzler tire came out that was great for the 26" crowd as it's a taller tire thus having more profile. With that said there is so much going on in my garage there are parts all over for different builds...
The stereo is proving to be challenging. Bag lids and available fairing space is limiting me. So I'm doing a work around which affects everything else...
-
Wow, glad to finally catch up to this thread. Nice work puzzled!
-
Always impressed by your workmanship.
-
I only have one thing to say... WOW!
In fact let me say that again backwards... WOW!
-
Parts are off to paint.....
Now I'll start the air line plumbing and stereo wiring.
-
Lookin good Mike, you've been busy. Thanks for the update.
-
Looking at your tank, who is the manufacture?
Thanks in advance

That is something I made from an OEM tank.

Dirty Air sells air tanks.
I'm thinking he meant gas tank...

My new plate arrived today...

Air ride and center stand switches.

Attaches to the horn mount stud.

Checking to see if the chin spoiler will clear the oil cooler. Doesn't look like it will be a problem.

Nicely done Mike. I personally like the fact that the way you engineer these modifications they are thought out and done as if they could be factory. On steroids of coarse!!
-
Well i thought my buddy Mike (Puzzled) was a little nutso for buying an 18 CVO RG after all the work in his 13 CVO RG...but low and behold i just put a deposit on an 18 Black Earth/Black SE RG today and my 11 SE SG is up for sale (and possibly sold). I guess i’m Just as nutso?
The bludgeoning of my bank account will again start with exhaust, tuners, air suspension, wheels, forks, triple trees, front fender, etc. Mike...save that parts list!
Gonna be a green xmas...
-
For the most part my view...
-
The stock windshield with the additional rake and height puts the WS at about the bottom of my nose.
-
Everything below the tape will be painted body color. I'm undecided on an orange stripe (rocker box color) or black stripe or no stripe.
-

If the orange was on the front fender like the Dark Earth I would say "Yes, add the orange stripe on the windshield." But.........it's not, so nope on the orange stripe.
MHO, DH
-
Howz about a stealthy black artsie "PUZZLED" below the tape instead of solid paint?
-
i say no paint... if your asking :nixweiss:, i like the contrast of the black/grey just cant wait to see it when your finished

Great point... With that train of thought there will be more orange on the bike. Front and rear fenders are getting a painted version of the tank emblem. The bags are getting their own thing staying within the colors already on the bike...
-

It'll get paint. Anything below my tape line is unusable was as I can't see through the fairing. The paint imo adds a small touch of a custom look.
-

Lol. The plate is enough...
-
Mike, other's opinions shouldn't be worth a ton on your bike. For what little it's worth though here's what I thought when I closed my eyes and tried to picture your bike. I'd do the orange stipe if there is anything complementary stripe fore and aft. If the orange could look as if it was tracking front to back. If it's just a couple of splashes of orange on a vertical plane of the rocker boxes and windshield I think it would look too abrupt and not complement the lines of the bike though
That is unless of course I'm totally full of chit.... :drink:
-
Mike,
I'm certain that I'm not alone here by saying... I just love watching another creation of "Puzzled" coming to life!
The other thing I'm certain of is that whatever you decide on for paint, no doubt it will be uniquely yours, and fantastic, just like your other creations.
Thanks for letting all of us follow along with the process. :2vrolijk_21:

Set thinking about it you are correct. There won't be any other pinstriping on the bike. I'm kicking around a slightly smaller version of the tank emblem.. all matching.

Thank you. This time around things seem a little easier with the exception of the stereo. I know what changes I wanted to make from the 13 to the 18.
-
Spent an hour or so tonight working on the bike. The chin spoiler is now fitted and ready for paint.
First cut around the crash bar.
-
204
-
In order to make the fairing support work I have to raise it up. The bottom hole of the support now uses the top hole in the frame. The welded nut has to be removed for the support to sit flush to the frame.
-
I'll use frame touch up paint to seal the area I ground down.
-
Cutting the hole for the fairing support proved to be challenging as it wasn't as simple as a round hole. The support had a welded tab which is anything but round. This just required some file work to the chin spoiler.
-
Once mounted the chin spoiler should sit about an 1/8" off of the frame.
-
Ready to send to paint. It'll be gray with black screens just like the stock one.
-
Lookin good Mike, you are a talented guy. Thanks for sharing!
-
I needed a 49mm fork seal tool.
-
A piece of 2" diameter PVC is perfect. Contour the end a little so it fits in the lower leg without issue.
-
Works well for about $5.
-
Installed....
-
:2vrolijk_21:
-
Thanks, doing my forks next week! Great bike BTW.
-
The forks are back on now.
-
Nice hidden axle.
-
Look at all of that wiring....
-
Front air ride lines are in and run to the control valve.
-
I kept the tail light wires and the bag lock wires. The rest I removed from the bike.
-
I kept two wires out of that entire pug. I haven't cut anything yet. I've been disassembling the plugs and removing the pins.
-
The wiring diagram is invaluable.
-
My box of stereo parts showed up. It looks like I'll be using all but two 4" super tweeters. I just can't come up with space in the fairing for them.
-
The PRV's are over sized so they don't quite fit in the enclosures.
-
A few marks as a guide...
-
Dremel and a cut off wheel....
-
225
-
Dynamat to cover the cut and keep the enclosure sealed.
-
Next up was the radio tray....
-
I'm making as much room as I can get for the pile of amps.
-
This will help some.
-
I'll cleanup the edges and apply some paint.
-
damn, dude. where do you find jeans big enough to hold your balls? very impressive, and a bit intimidating at the same time. :banana rock:
looking forward to seeing the end product.
-
Wow, your sure making good progress. You planning to be done for Bike week?
-
Wow, your sure making good progress. You planning to be done for Bike week?
Yes, that is my goal. At this point in time I don't see anything that will delay me. Usually I have to wait on Parts, paint and a wheel. I was able to get all of that early this time around.
-
damn, dude. where do you find jeans big enough to hold your balls? very impressive, and a bit intimidating at the same time. :banana rock:

Lol, they get pretty easy after a couple of builds.
-
Puzzled. Wow can't say enough how impressed I am with what you're doing. Got a question tho. Why buy a 40 grand bike and take it all apart and rebuild it? Why not buy a frame and part the bike together? It seems to me you removed an awesome bike and will create an awesomer bike. Where you could have just created and awesomer bike. I think you have the talent to do it.
-
That is a good question that I get asked often. For me it is all about CVO ownership. Starting with a frame it would not be a CVO. I enjoy the challenge of building the bike while maintaining the CVO look.
-
I tend to agree with Glide-Man... Although I realize what you're saying about CVO ownership as well.
Then again, you could be riding a PVO. :2vrolijk_21:
;D
Keep creating, and taking us all along on your adventurous ride - We love it!
-
I think you do it, cause you can.....good on ya!! Look forward to your seeing new creation!
-

I get what your saying and think thats what makes your "builds" just that much more special than all the others out there!
-
. I enjoy the challenge of building the bike while maintaining the CVO look.
You sure did a great job of that with the 13. I'm sure we will be able to say the same about this one.
-
There are two tabs on top of the headlight that are used as wire retainers. I removed them to make room for the amps. I saw this done on another forum so I had some guidance.
-
232
-
I removed the mounting tabs from the amps. I gained about 1 1/4".
-
234
-
The fairing fits without issue. I'll use some velcro to hold them in place. I can get one amp and the processor under the radio. Unfortunately I'm trying to get an additional amp in there also. I'll keep working at it as the space is there and I just have to figure out the correct configuration.
-
I'm guessing you didn't bother buying any extended warranty :D
-
I'm guessing you didn't bother buying any extended warranty :D
LMAO.

Looks amazing, can't wait to see the finished project. Wish I had half the talent and courage you have.
-

Thank you. We don't realize what we can do until we try. I've made my share of mistakes along the way.......
-
I know this guy...well...he has way more agg blowing trailer tires on the way to Daytona than building this damn bike!!! :D
-
The wheel is powdercoated black and ready for gray paint. Had I thought about it I would have ordered the wheel black...
-
I'm going to clean up the harness today and run some wires for the air ride, center stand and stereo.
-
The factory wires all bundled together. I cut the canbus wire to the bags, power and ground wire to the rear amp. Everything else that was removed was done through the plug.
-
Pulling wires through for the rear speakers.
-
Stereo stuff all run..
-
Building a color matched harness for the air ride and center stand.
-
Soldering the wires together. I'm not very good at this as I usually don't solder anything. Connectors would make the harness huge so I had to give soldering a try. I'll get better in time...
-
I'm running new brake lines from the calipers to the ABS block using Goodridge Sniper II line and fittings.
-
They go together fairly easy. I made a few test connections just to practice. Jr1000yarder turned me onto this line, nice stuff. Wait until you see how he has me running the lines from the bars...
-
Wow that's a huge undertaking. It's gonna be awesome I'll bet. Blacking out the wheels like on mine would look bitchin in my opinion on the gray especially with everything else trimmed out in black on your bike. Good to see your progress.
Thanks for keeping us in the loop!
-
The Sniper II line is very easy to run.
-
I need a 7/16 banjo bolt for the ABS line that runs to the master cylinder.
-
That tab is located in the handlebar clamp. It has to be removed to allow the brake line to be run through the handlebar.
-
Removed.
-
I coated the inside of the clamp to see where the line made contact.
-
Clearanced'...
-
Nice clean look.
-
The line runs back under the clamp and into the handlebar.
-
Another...
-
Cleaned up the wiring, got it all to fit under the cover.
-
Neatly tucked in around the battery.
-
Mike work is truly AMAZING !!!
-
Very clean, nice job. Time consuming I'll bet?! Are you sticking with the original bars?
-
Very clean, nice job. Time consuming I'll bet?! Are you sticking with the original bars?
Yes I am keeping the OEM bars. Factory Road Glides seem to be ergonomically correct for me. I thought about painting them however I think that would be too much Gray.
-
I dig these detailed build threads. Been watching and rarely post in them.
Back to your soldering. Work looks fine to me. Easy to bend and reheat if not right, and Dremel sand away any sharp edges. Shrinkwrap those joints and you'll be fine. Only suggestion is to stagger groups of solder joints 1-2" so you don't have one "lump" of soldered joints wrapped up in parallel.

Yes. Parts are in the booth....
-
You know it’s an awesome build when I’m super excited to see it and it’s not even my bike!! Looking amazing (but of course, I’m partial to the Gunship Gray bikes).
Great work!!
-
I wanted to 2nd the comments on the work you are doing and the time you are taking to keep us up to date. But I see I am 143ing the work!! :2vrolijk_21:
Really love the brake line work.

Did you match it, or a painter near you?
-
Did you match it, or a painter near you?
Neither, I ran it all down to Joe at Xtreme Dimensions. I am adding a couple of subtle graphics and he was the right guy for the job.
-
Thank you all for the compliments. Much appreciated.
-
The 7/16 banjo bolt showed up and it isn't big enough for the ABS master cylinder line. There isn't anything bigger available.
-
Banjo bolt
-
Banjo fitting.
-
Let's try this. I stepped the bits up until I reached the desired size.
-
I cleaned up the hole with a small file and I'm good to go. I was concerned with enlarging the hole I'd loose volume around the bolt for fluid. Jr1000yarder had to do the same thing and his bike with a turbo stopped without issue.
-
With a little luck I'll be able to add fluid this weekend and test all of my connections.
-

Figured Joe could do it, he does very good work. If I do the lowers may go that route if my local guy can't get a good match.
-
Great idea on the banjo fitting! That should work just fine.

Chin spoiler....

Sad to say it's our last day here. This is one of the few vacations that I wasn't ready to go home after a few days. I could do another week here!! :orange:

Bottom pads Delrin or something comparable? That's a trick little system and one I'd not seen before. I always dig the details.

Nice to see your progress. Very nice touches, all seems very well thought out. Thanks for sharing!
-
Bottom pads Delrin or something comparable? That's a trick little system and one I'd not seen before. I always dig the details.
Yes, they are some sort of Delrin type material. The pads are interlocking so they don't move when stacked. I also have different length legs to keep the blocks to a minimum.
-
Nice to see your progress. Very nice touches, all seems very well thought out. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you. The build will really start moving here shortly as the paint is almost done.
-
I do like those defiance speaker grills. Will be interested to see when you get the tweeters in.

Computer version with a little color...
Really like this, what about a bit of work to "Float" the Harley Davidson off/over top of the "CVO"? :nervous:
-
Installed the MRI electric center stand.
Did you go to a 2 into 1 exhaust to get rid of the cross under pipe? (referencing note on the MRI site)
-
Did you go to a 2 into 1 exhaust to get rid of the cross under pipe? (referencing note on the MRI site)
Yes I did. I went with a Freedom Python.
I have used a MRI stand with cross over exhaust despite what the web site says. If the bike is lowered the legs will be shorter allowing a little more clearance.
-
Where's the paint for cryin out loud???

Started working on the clutch line today. The 17-18 slave cylinder used a different fitting than my 13. It is a male bubble flare, 10mmx1

Very nice and clean. If you can use another set of those bars let me know Mike.

I learned a little something today....
I went to put power to the bike today and had limited power. My first thought is what did I touch that caused this? I started checking wires for power and power was present. My grounds were good. My fuses were good. Why don't I have gauges, radio and headlight? I removed most of the unneeded wiring by simply unplugging them with the exception of 10 wires. 3 pairs of canbus wires from the amps, 3 power wires and one ground all from the amps. I broke out the wiring diagram and started reading. The canbus is looking for 3.5 volts. All of the parts hooked to canbus use the same color wires. Looking at the diagram and following all of the wires they are all looped together. I broke the loop in two places so I attached those three sets of wires back into the loop. WE HAVE POWER! I may have some codes from breaking the loop however I should be able to clear them and be good to go.

Houston, we have ignition.
-
This is what I have to work with.
-
Another.. what I'm trying to show is the usable space in the fairing.
-
I need to get all of that in the space you don't see!!
-
Since the small amps are limited in regards to their tuning abilities I'll be using this to clean up the sound.
-
The audio control and two amps under the radio tray. The other two will go on top of the headlights. I cut all of the mounting tabs off of the audio equipment to make everything as small as I could. It all fit without the wiring attached. Next up is to start running the wiring...
-
Looks kinda familiar Mike.....

That tab is located in the handlebar clamp. It has to be removed to allow the brake line to be run through the handlebar.
Just removed the tab/peg in mine today just to get more adjustment for the controls on the new bars. Makes all the difference. Thanks for the insight!

Looks like I'm going to be busy.....
Several parts are due to arrive tomorrow according to UPS.
Picking up the painted parts over the weekend.
UPS says more parts will be arriving Monday.
That should be everything unless I run into something I forgot....
I do want to add an air pressure gauge once I figure out where I'm going to install it.
I scheduled off some work the beginning of February with hopes to spend that time finishing up the bike.

I am feeling good that I will make Daytona with a finished bike. :2vrolijk_21:
I have made way to many trips to Daytona with a bike that was running but not complete. :(
I am looking forward to seeing the wheel.

Here is my 21" powder coated in Black. A fellow CVO forum member purchased it and changed the color.

The same emblem will be on the front fender and windshield also. The painted version of our 3D tank emblem. Bag graphics will be similar.
Don't know.... I haven't seen it yet... Joe messed with the color enough to where he is happy with it so I trust him.. I sort of have to ;)

I own tools and am determined...

I had to cut a relief line in the cover for the stock ac cover to sit in.
-
This allowed the two pieces to sit flat against each other.
-
Now I'll sand it down and paint it gloss black. I did consider painting it the color of the motor. I may tack weld the end of my slice together just for insurance.

No. The bags are lower than both of the components hanging off of the bag rails.
This was not my original thought in regards to the air. I was going to go with two individual systems.

Worked on making the seat fit yesterday. What a PITA. I got it roughed in good enough. I'll take the bike to a upholstery guy to take care of the seat for me.
-
I trimmed this off and a hole lot more..
-
Getting the stiching to sit in the center was driving me crazy.
-
I swapped all of the gas tank internals over to the new tank.
-
Tried the windshield out of curiosity. I think it'll work for me.
-
I like the look.
-
Installed the Defiance can and trans side covers.
-
Clearanced' the heat shield so it didn't touch the brake arm.
-
Started working on the bags.

I have seen rear speakers in the lids of saddlebags. I have also see subwoofers applied to the inside bag wall like this here. However, this is mid-range and tweeter. I presume you have done this on one or more of your other bikes. I am just wondering if it's a valid design approach from the acoustics standpoint. It would seem to me that the speakers driving sound into the tires will cause distortions and reflections and would likely lose effectiveness when traveling at highway speeds. Is this solution more applicable to a stationary motorcycle or does it produce results at speed that warrant the expense?
Hope I get to see and HEAR the final product some day.

Simon I run mids as to not have the speakers fighting for the same air wave inside the bag. I'm driving them with enough power that the sound loss is minimal while moving. I'm presented with a few challenges on this bike that I'm trying to work around. I usually use a bag lid that holds three speakers, 2 6.5" mids and 1 4" tweeter. Than I install the 8" as pictured. I'll tune the 8" for as much low end as I can get to it. The tweeters are stupid loud, enough so I have turn them down. It will be interesting to see what this configuration gives me. All this because I wasn't willing to give up the bag locks!!

So how long before the bike gets more miles on the road than it has miles of wire added? ;D

That could be awhile.... Daytona will be the shake down runs.. I am bringing my 13 with me just in case...

Installing the bag rails. I added some hi temp silicone too help out.

3 large rivets hold the skid plates on along with double sided tape.

Back side of the bags.

This is the connector I'm using for the wires that run into the bag. It is an 8 pin connector.

I think I'm going to bring the wires into the bag on the front as opposed to the backside.

Wiring the plugs..

Wires run to the tail light, compressor and tag light. All tucked up and ready to go.

More wires and air lines fastened and ready to go.
-
Safety/override switches. Two are air ride dump valves. When switched the shocks can't fill up. I'm running these as I've experienced air creep in the past. The third switch is a compressor kill switch. I did this so I can turn the bike on and not have the compressor running if not needed.
-
I was able to get the gauges and shrouds installed.

Here is the color match. Looks great to me.

I'm glad I left the speaker grills black.

Goofing off..

Waiting on tank badges.
-
Unlike my 13 I can get my foot under the fender of the 18. Maybe this will cut down on the number of knuckleheads that kick/walk into my bike.
-
It'll be nice to be able to get through corners with a little more speed.

Great Job!
It's really starting to come together very nicely!

Super sized CVO lol

Started wiring the stereo today. I feel like poop and I think that helped as I just took my time as I had no extra energy to put into it!!
While this looks like a mess it really isn't all that bad. After the components get tuned I'll stick them into their home and shorten the wires as needed.
-
Four amps and some sort of signal processor...
-
All that goes in there! I know it fits without the wiring so it'll be fun with the wires attached...
I'm still waiting on a couple of pieces for the sound system. With a little luck they'll show up by the weekend.
Still no tank badges. It took a little bit of work to get a set ordered. Even though I own the bike I had to jump through hoops and prove ownership. Apparently peeps are pulling Vin numbers from the net and ordering the restricted CVO parts.

They have tried pulling VIN from un-sold bikes on floor. They have also tried pulling VIN from parked bikes. So even the on line dealers that sell parts are requiring proof of ownership.

Been waiting on mine as well. I was told the same thing as you as well that I will only be approved for 1 set for the life of the bike after proving ownership. My local parts guy has confirmed this from HD several times in regards to my bike.

I purchased 6x9 adapters knowing that they are not for my application. I own tools...
Left side is how the adapter came. Right side shows how much material I had to remove.

Fitment around the electric bag lock.

Cutting the second adapter. Left is stock, right is what is needed to clear.

Notching the speaker.

Test fit

Assembling everything with silicone now.

Assembled
-
So much for not fitting my application lol!!
-
Its coming along nicely. Good work.
-
I finished up the other speaker lid and installed it. I hooked up all of the speakers. I was a little concerned as to what the stereo was going to sound like being a set of speakers down compared to my 13. I no longer have any concerns! This thing sounds great. I can't wait to hear it tuned. I'll have to get all of the amps installed into the fairing and the fairing back on.
I'm down to a punch list:
Button up the stereo
Install the Ride-On balancer
Install the tank badges when they arrive
Install the seat bolt bracket
Install front motor stabilizer
Install shift linkage
Test ride!!!
-
Really cool Mike! Do you have a time frame for completion that you're shooting for? Can't wait to see the finished product. Should be an award winner for sure.

I'm just trying to have it done for Daytona. I don't foresee that being a problem. I'd like to be able to ride some before leaving for Florida as opposed to making my shake down runs in Florida during bike week!!

With parking during Bike Week at a premium cost wise and very limited, entering your bike in a show or two where you want to be anyway solves that problem nicely and the bike is safe too.

If I learned anything from any bike contest, you never know what the judges or fans like. It's always a crapshoot. You have to do it just for the love of showing off your bike and you can do that on the street just as well or better than in a contest.

I'm still waiting on tank emblems. They are due to be released the end of February. I have to route/secure the front brake lines. The seat mounting bracket needs to be drilled and attached. I have the factory red stickers for the front wheel that need to be installed. It looks like I'm going to take the seat to the local upholster Friday to get straightened out. That should be it.... Break in miles/shake down runs...

That's bad ass!

Well, for all the Gunship Grey CVO's being bought and posted on this forum, yours is certainly a one of a kind. Won't look like any other $45k motorcycle. Of course, it isn't a $45k motorcycle anymore :)
-
Installed the seat bracket earlier today. I just finished up the electric bag locks. I have an appointment Friday to have the seat attended to. That leaves tank badges to finish up. I have one side!!
-
Lol wheel stickers. These are printed on what feels like aluminum. Thick pieces.
-
Changed the caliper inserts again. The first ones were curved and didn't sit all that well. These are much better.

It's all in the details. :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

First of all nothing short of incredible. Second thing, can someone tell me what the deal is with the wheel stickers? I don't get it.

lol I don't know why they are on there. I just matched the stock wheel. Seems odd...
-
I'm guessing that the sticker on the wheel is there for an accent that may actually give the illusion of a stripe that goes all the way around the wheel when the wheel is in motion. Of coarse we would need to have someone ride next to us to check this theory. :confused5:
-
I like that theory.

That is what I was going to say exactly. :2vrolijk_21: - it looks basic and plain, like a stock bike with some add ons. Man oh Man does it stand out when you look at it. Plus the 477 or so pictures really helps out. I don't think I will ever overlook a custom again with out looking for all the little things. Great Job and thank you so much for the detailed sharing.

Awesome, I'll bet your getting a ton of compliments.
-
Windshield view from the side.
-
Current windshield sits about 1 1/2" above the vent. I could use a shield that is 1" to 2" taller, preferably with a curved lip.
-
If you measure up from the center vent I believe my stock one is 8" with no recurve. I'm not at home right now but happy to check when I get there.
-
Due to the various angles of the windshields, I use from the top of the dash number as that is what you are looking over. The Windvest 12" I ordered was way too high although the measurable surface area wasn't that much larger than what I have. Damm windshields.....
-

The stock windshield on a 2018 CVO Road Glide is taller for all colors besides Gunship Gray. Here is mine on a Black Earth / Vivid Black.

How much above the vent do you think that is?
I have a stock Road Glide WS on the bike now. Everyone else's looks taller than what I have for some reason.. lol

Have to say it again, the bike looks amazing. I hope I can see it in person some day.

So 2 2/3" at the back and 8" bottom to top in the center. Let me know if you want it Mike. Just pay shipping.
Ooops, it loaded upside down. lol

I'll measure the front of mine tomorrow. Thank you.

So as part of the 3 different themes for the 2018 CVO RoadGlides, it looks like the Gunship Gray got a really short windshield. The Orange and the Black FLTRXSEs got a higher one. If you go to Harley's website and just look at the CVO RoadGlide and go to the Explore Paint in 360degree area you can see the windshields changing between Gunship Gray and the others.
And it looks to be 2 5/8" above the vent. Not sure why my photo rotated after I posted but it did.
-
This is a big help. So my 8" is 1 1/2" above the vent as I measured. A 10" or 11" would work for well for me.
-

If you've never run a freedom shield you'll love it. John is very easy to work with. Good thing is they come covered you can test it and if you don't like just pay shipping back and he'll exchange it no cost.

Back from Daytona where we put 1004 trouble free miles on the fresh build. The bike is everything that I was striving for. Needless to say I'm very happy with it.
The suspension is perfect. The new rear shocks can be ridden at any height. I don't have a gauge on the bike so I don't know how much pressure I'm running in them. Visually it looks like I'm running them at about the middle of the 4 1/2" stroke. The front end with the AS pistons in them rides equally as great.
I'm happy with my choice of saddlebags. The taper really allows me to get through the corners without hitting, even with the shocks partially aired down. With the taper of the bags I lost some storage space compared to my 2013. It required me to be creative packing then.
The stereo sounds good at high volume. It still needs to be tuned to clean the sound up some. The factory head unit lacks a little compared to an aftermarket radio. I'm hoping I can work around that as I like how it is water proof and has GPS. I did use the GPS once. It took me a minute to figure it out...
The seats could use some gel in them or I need some more saddle time to get use to them.
The windshield works however I'd like it to be a little taller for highway travel. Getting use to the various vents in the fairing is interesting. I'm still not sure what they do.
I'm thinking of adding a chopped tour pack for just a little bit more room.
My laundry list for the bike:
Change Windshield
Change fluids
Check belt tension
Order fairing vent grills
Change shifter arm to the short one
Change rear speaker grills to HD
Tune radio
Fabricate fender skid plate
-
St. Augustine
-
Glad your happy with the bike, its beautiful. That is interesting about the taper in the bags letting you run the curves. That should be worth the loss of space.
-
Totally dig your end result, spectacular result. Thanks for the photos too, great build article. Thanks for selling me your old (lol) 21" CVO wheel and CVO back end (bags and fender). I just have to paint / pinstripe them Amber Whiskey to match the rest. The bike will also get the matching CVO Knockout rear wheel. I'm also redoing a custom seat to emulate the seat on the grey 18 CVOs with black leather, perforated diamond centers, orange accent stitching and black stitching everywhere else.
-
Looks even better out in the Sun. AND you have a wife - Very understanding it appears lol. Must say you did an outstanding job, and unbelievable documentation to bring us along. Thank you!

I hope it works better for you than mine did, a cloud could block the signal. I let the trial run its course and didn't renew. Its odd for me as I have 5 subscriptions. On the Bike I just Thumb drive it or stream.

XM reception on the 18 CVO Road glide stock is better than the reception on the 17 CVO Street glide stock. That said there is an easy fix on the 17 CVO Street glide. I moved mine up on top of the fairing next to the vent, on the opposite side of the button to close the vent. Its not noticeable and works very well, better than the CVO road glide stock.

A friend of mine (with a Limited) tried moving his XM antenna on top of his fairing just behind the windshield, and it didn't make much difference, so I'm hesitant to go through the bother.
Possibly moving it works better on a Road Glide. :nixweiss:

Rich came over and put the initial tune on the stereo.
-
I changed out my mid range 8's to mid bass 8's. For them to work I had to add a spacer to allow the speaker to move. They were generic spacers that were oversized.
-
A trip to the table sander and the spacers now match the speaker size.
-
A look inside the bags. The speakers don't take up as much room as you'd think.
-
Everything back in place. Installing everything was kicking my butt so I had to walk away and come back back the next day. I took my time and everything fit like it originally did.
I did drop the headlight and broke the trim piece. I was so pissed that I did that. I was thinking there goes $600. Luckily the trim piece is replaceable.
-
One of the switch covers fell off. Taking one of the other covers off to try to match it I destroyed the switch, ugghh.
-
Disintegrated...
-
Back together.
-
Tuned the stereo to meet my preference and put it all back together. While not as big of a system as in my 13 it sure is close as far as sound.
I have to change the fluids still than log some miles....

As usual, very tastefully done. You keep setting the bar very high. :2vrolijk_21:
Great job!

That really looks great in addition to the benefit of the added storage space. Sort of "balances" out the front end. Very nicely done! :2vrolijk_20:
-
Continues to look amazing Mike. Really enjoying watching the progress, seeing all the attention to detail and trying to guess what's going on with so much more of the details we don't get to see from this end of the computer monitors. Thanks for sharing.
-
I am not happy with the fit of the front tour pack mounts. I tried the inserts from both of my backrests and my other tour pack, they all fit the same.
-
I didn't have time to cut some new spacers before my trip so I improvised.... I wrapped the metal sleeve with material style electrical tape.
-
Worked great as there is no movement in the TP now.
-
The TP worked great for us this weekend. The right amount of extra space. While our helmets don't fit in the TP they do fit in the sadlebag.
-
Interesting, so when not in use you can put the black magnetic caps on and not see the chrome. Does it still look ok after the tour pack has been resting on it awhile?
-

The tape? The bulk of the weight of the TP is on the rear mounts. The TP hasn't come off yet as we're still on our trip (extended weekend).

I seriously think that that's about the most creative thing you did to your bike (remaking the CVO wheel in a 26). I think the wheel is sick but it's a 21. Your creative thought to get it in a 26 never even crossed my mind. I just started the usual shopping for whatever I saw. Please advise.

PM sent with wheel info.

I took the bike to get dyno tuned. I changed the pipe from stock and wanted to make sure I wasn't going to melt the motor running lean. I have no idea what these bikes make for power however I'm content for now with what my stock motor makes. Maybe once the M8 issues get sorted out I'll consider doing more to the motor.
-
Yow that's a nice torque curve.
-
I thought that you had the Fullsac treatment with TTS which would include Steve's canned map initially?
Nice...and now you know for sure. I'll do the same one of these days.

I had the Fullsac system on for a very short time. It was just way to quiet for me. I never loaded a tune in the bike which is why I was concerned with the fuel tables.
I am good to go for now. :orange:

Finally got the fender skid plate cut.
-
Another
-
This is what I'm after, fender tip protection.
-
The surface underneath is anything but flat.
-
Now to figure out how to attach it.
-
My thought process is to epoxy three bolts to the fender and bolt the skid plate to it.
-
Epoxy applied.
-
Well that didn't go as planned. The epoxy seeped down and bonded my bolts to the skid plate. Crap. I tried getting the epoxy in-between the skid plate and fender. That didn't work so well either as the epoxy just ran out. So I put epoxy in the receiver groove and held it in place until it bonded to the fender. I than was able to get more epoxy between the fender and skid plate. If I were to do it again I'd look into possibly making a bigger skid plate and figure out how to bolt it to the fender. If the fender was off of the bike I could have flipped it upside down and got the bolts to adhere to the fender. The way it sits it feels very secure.

What did you machine it out of? I was thinking of doing one on mine out of 303 stainless.

Aluminum, that way it matches the bag skid plates.
-
Gotcha I’m doing those out of 303 as well and bonding them with panel bond.

I'll add a little more epoxy tomorrow to fill in any voids I didn't get the first time around.

Looks killer.

I bolted and riveted the bag skid plates onto the bags.

Quality job as usual. Now to put some magnesium on the bottom side so that when you do scrape, it will shoot out quite the shower of sparks!

LOL My 13 has mag pucks on them and they do throw some sparks.
I set this bike up differently. In the event of a total loss of air the bags won't hit the ground. The taper of the bags keeps me from dragging them even when not fully aired up. I believe the running boards will touch before the bags. Now the fender on the other hand has hit twice already. One time I was pulling into a driveway and forgot to air the bike up. The other time was while I was unloading it from the camper. I didn't have the nose of the camper high enough......

I have minimal plans for the bike this year. The build turned out as I expected and there isn't anything I need to change or fix :2vrolijk_21:. The stereo works well however it isn't my 13. That bike was stupid loud and clear. So I'm going to mess around with the stereo some. I've contemplated changing the head unit at one point but I have decided to see what I can get out of a different speaker setup (closer to my 13). There is only one company making dual 6.5" lids and they are very proud of them with what they are asking for them. I'm sorry they aren't worth it to me, I'll make my own set. I picked a set of lids manufactured by the same company as I had on the 13. I'll use their basic setup and modify it to do what I need.
-
Once I get the speakers here I'll decide if I'm going to use adapters to convert from 6x9 to 6.5" or just make entirely new mounting plates.

How about triple 6.5"s? Use the ends and block the middle?

The high end audio hasn't been a demon I've chased for a very long time. So this idea could be as bad as a hairy palmed moderator. Just remembered seeing them so thought it worth sharing.

Wrong year lids for my 18. Those are the lids I had on my 13. :2vrolijk_21:

From my 13.

Nuts. My bad. Even knew there was a difference and wasn't paying attention. So who does have the painfully expensive lids for the new bikes?

Thought this was neat....

Couldn't forget about my 13. :2vrolijk_21:

I think you could get Hot Wheels on a copyright infingement ;D

Wow, those are really cool!

Those are amazing Mike! Very cool.

ok..... how you make that happen :nixweiss:
-
Nicely done. How did you manage that?
-
mike are you selling your lids?

mike are you selling your lids?
I was thinking about it as they are complete with the electric locks. I'd have to tear them apart to get the actuators out.
-
If you do pm me

I dropped a pair of 6.5" speakers into the lids to see what I am up against. This will be an easy project. I'm going to use some 1/8" plastic to cover the 6x9 holes.
-
Mocking the speaker spacing up with some cardboard and I found 2" is my magic number. This will raise the speakers up into the lid leaving about a 1/2" sitting inside the bag. This will help with bag space as the 6x9's drop down into the bags 4". Where I place the 6.5" holes will be determined by the bag locks and lid tether. I have a fair amount of room to move the speakers front to back. Ideally I'd like them as far forward as possible for the sound.
-
Plenty of room. I may try 2 1/4" and see what the gets me....
-
I have 2 sets of grills. One set I'm going to paint body color and the other set will get painted gloss black. I'm not sure what way I want to go with these yet.
-
As of today I'm going to keep my factory head unit and run everything through a Rockford Fosgate DSR1 digital sound processor. This will allow me to tune each individual set of speakers.

Have you thought about angling them, or at least the front pair, forward a bit so that you can hear them better from your riding position?
-
My spacers arrived.
This is with a 2" speakers spacer.
-
Everything clears...
-
They sit up in the lid nicely.
-
ugghh....I didn't consider the mounting hardware.
-
After removing a lot of material and using only 1" spacers this is the best I could come up with. I'll fine tune it all once I'm confident it will all work.
-
This is without any spacers.
-
This is with 1" spacers. I can live with that.
-
Modified next to stock.
-
The spacers needed some "clearancing" in order for the speakers to fit.
-
Everything is ready for assembly.
While test fitting the parts I noticed I have a spacer ring pushing the speaker tray out some. I'm going to sand a little off of the OD of the spacer to help with the fit. I'm hoping to have everything mocked up and functioning by the weekend. This way I can get the lids off to paint Monday.
-
I worked on the lids some more Thursday and I was able to finish them up.
Fully assembled.
-
They will never be waterproof with gaps like this. I have waterproof/weatherproof covers I'll have to keep in the bags.
-
I believe I will be able to keep the electric bag locks.
-
Everything fits, clears and closes.
-
Just to be sure it will all work I even bolted them to the bike.
-
The parts ready for paint.
-
The paint has been sprayed...
-
Looking at the rear grills I think I'm going to go with the gray.
-
The heat shields and rear grills. That's a lot of gray...
-
Coming along nicely
-
1 black
-
2 black
-
3 black
-
1 gray
-
2 gray
-
While the black itself looks good and would add some needed color to the bike IMO it just doesn't flow well. I'll run the gray grills for now.
Next up is to install the lids and start wiring.
-
gray :2vrolijk_21:
-
If you want to break up the Gray maybe paint a bar and shield on the top of the lid using the same black and orange color scheme as the Harley Davidson on the lower part of the saddlebag. Black with Orange outline.
Good choice on the Gray too.
-
While black looked good, I think Gray looks better, and goes more with the flow of the bike.
-
I finally sent the backrest out to get matched to the seats. The backrest on the right is for the Gunship Gray.

Exactly what I want to do. Harley makes a perforated leather with red stitch pad but it is for the Small Backrest. They do not offer one that I know of for the Standard or Large...
-
I spent some time on the bike prepping it for Daytona Bike Week 2019.
Installed the matching backrest and keyed alike lock.
-
I added a Rockford Fosgate DSR1 digital signal processor. For the minimal investment this little box made a huge difference. It allows me to tune each individual speaker with a 31 band EQ. The biggest difference was just setting the crossover's correctly. This is all done through an app on my phone.
-
I painted the speaker grills. I had one jump off of the bike after hitting a crater sized hole last year. The grill slid up the road and suffered some road rash.
-
That DSR1 sounds really cool, neat that it can be adjusted with your phone.

It is cool. I'd like to try one on a system closer to stock and see how it improves the sound. (Um cough Brad)
