Title: From Sturgis and the Black Hills....across the country and back....
Post by: JCZ on September 22, 2017, 12:25:59 PM
Wow, a different place when you're actually able to ride....and not be stuck in a very long line of bikes just waiting to get off the highway or on the highway.  During the rally, it doesn't matter if you're on Main St., riding the Black Hills or waiting to use the outhouse.....you're in line waiting.

Left the Three Flags RV Park yesterday, after I finally got out of bed (retired ain't for sissies....but I got this!) and headed down the highway in a t-shirt.  We're at an RV Park about four miles east of Black Hills HD and about 19 miles from Sturgis.  Got these shots as I passed by on the highway.

A lot of road work between Rapid City and Sturgis.  Getting it ready for Cam and Kiro next year....    Babe and I were talking day before yesterday about how nice all the roads are around here compared to Colorado.

It was about this time, as I was headed back to the highway towards Deadwood that I noticed my "check engine" light and the "battery" light came on and my volts had dropped so I headed straight to Black Hills HD back in Rapid City to get it checked out.  For those that have never been, this dealership is massive.  I'm not sure who they're selling all the motorcycles to.  While in the service dept. I overheard a customer talking about storing his bike for the winter....yep, it snows here so they don't even year around riding.

A stator and the compensator both had to be replaced.  Greatful for the extended warranty....he told me that it'd be $1,017 if I didn't have the extended warranty.  It's 5:30 p.m.  Back on the road and headed to the Black Hills before the sun goes down.  There are still a lot of riders in the area.....and on a weekday...

We're seeing more and more big rigs pulling 5th wheels.  This one is kind of a small 5th wheel for a big rig.  Notice the Smart car behind the droan.

and if you've never rode the Black Hills, these signs are everywhere!

The sign shows a switchback but actually, they're corkscrews....where the road goes in a complete loop back over the top of itself.  The Black Hills have a lot of switchbacks and several corkscrews....

The angle of approach is interesting.  You can't see a car or bike coming until you've made the turn into the tunnel.....people often have to back up...

How did I get my F-350 dually through all these tunnels the day before yesterday?   :nixweiss:   Those pics were posted on facebook.

This is another one of those corkscrews.  If you look to the left, under the guardrail, you'll see where the road comes from under this bridge before going from the bridge straight into the tunnel....this is one of those kind of roads where a video would be so much better...

I met this couple further down the road.  From Canada and he works at a raptor center, training the American bald eagles.  Showed me a couple of videos on his phone....very interesting.  You meet the nicest people on a Honda.  :huepfenlol2:

The top half of this sign starts out kind of like the sign for Tail Of The Dragon.  It's the last few lines of this sign that make it uniquely different....

The sun was starting to go down.....much more than it looks like in these pics.....and I've already noticed that the wildlife is starting to come out and I've got quite a ways to go before I get back down out of these mountains.  OK, fessing up.....I did have several close calls going back down...two with deer and one close call with buffalo.

Heards of deer on both sides of the road and they're all trying to figure out which way to go as I'm on my back brake to the point the ABS kicked in...but hey, I got that picture dammit!  :2vrolijk_21:

My buffalo encounter.  They don't move fast like deer do but when they decide they want to cross the road.....well they just cross it any time they want because they know they can and besides, we're in their house....fortunately, for me, they didn't stop in the middle of the road.   :o

And still more deer running in front of me.  I saw more deer yesterday in a 20 mile streatch than I've ever saw in a day....

The narrowest tunnel of them all at 8'4" wide.  I'm still surprised that I was able to get my dually truck through this one, day before yesterday.  The whole way through I just kept thinking about the you tube videos that I'd seen in the past where people got their vehicles stuck in here.  :o  Babe was a nervous wreck....I told her "just look at the floorboard!".  She did and missed the whole adventure.....

And.....the reason they call it Needles Highway.....and it feels like you're squeezing through the eye of a needle...

And, for those of you that aren't on my facebook, here are the pics from the day before, when we were in my truck....

We stopped and talked to the couple on the bike at the far end.  They're from Vancouver, BC and they're on a CVO but didn't know anything about this forum.  I gave them a business card.  She videoed us in the truck, coming at them through the tunnel...only an inch or two in places, on either side.  We made it through without a scratch.....great depth perception.  8'4" and I'm taking these photos as I'm driving through.....Babe looking at the floorboard.  :huepfenlol2:

And if you take the wildlife loop of Custer State Park you come up on all kinds of wildlife like buffalo and antelope.  And there's a heard of these critters.....the food police.  All the wildlife stand right in the road.....buffalo, antelope, etc. but eventually they'll move.  These guys stand in the road, with the mammas and the babies on the shoulders and two or three of them will stand in front of you while another posse comes up to the windows on both sides of your vehicle and they put their nuzzle against the glass until eventually you roll your windows down and give them what ever food you have in your car.  If you don't have any (they know....they can smell it) they quickly move on to the next vehicle.  If you have food they hold you hostage until you give it up.  Once you start handing out the groceries, those that are standing in front now come up to your window to get their share and now you can proceed.....the food police.

Keep your drivers license, registration and insurance....we just want the groceries....

These people have a barking dog in the back seat and nothing to eat.....carry on.....

In the opposite direction, you see the president's heads as you come out of one of the tunnels....

We also went to the Crazy Horse Memorial the day that we were in the truck.  As large as the president's heads are, Crazy Horse is much, much larger.

It was supposed to rain today so Babe and I drove over to Ft. Meade Calvary Museum.  I'd rode by that place many times and just thought it was a VA hospital (on the way out of Sturgis to the old Full Throttle Saloon, on the right hand side).  One of the most interesting museums I've been to regarding American history.  Who would have known that our national anthem was first played on the parade grounds and an old fort that later becomes famous for the iron horse, Sturgis, South Dakota?  I'll be posting more pics tomorrow of that old fort and some of it's history as well as more pics taken in Deadwood and a couple very interesting ladies that we met there.

Right now.......it's raining very hard outside and we're greatful for this cozy little RV.  OK, maybe not so little at 42 feet and five slide outs. :nixweiss:

I've been to Sturgis a number of times.  Most people that ride a Harley have been there at least once in their lives.....it's kind of the mecca for Harley riders.  And I've rode out to the old Full Throttle Saloon (before it burned down) a number of times.  I vaguely remember the VA Hospital on the right just as you get out of town and before you get to the old FTS.

This week I noticed a number of signs along the highway from Rapid City to Sturgis that advertise about Ft. Meade Museum, Home To The 7th Calvary.  Being a US history buff....we went.  One of the best little museums that I've ever been to and the next time you're in Sturgis you may want to spend an hour or two.

http://www.fortmeademuseum.org/

But even more interesting than the old fort and it's history is the history of our national anthem, The Star Spangled Banner started here.....

The original Deadwood was built of wood and burned down in a fire of the 1800s.  When they rebuilt it, they built it out of stone and brick and many of those buildings are still standing and being used.

If you watched the Deadwood series on TV then you know that Saloon #10 is where Wild Bill Hickock was shot in the back while playing cards.  This is the location of that place and still a saloon today...

Babe and I were going from shop to shop just looking.  We had just finished eating and we went into a shop a few doors up the street and met this lady working behind the counter......Olivia.  She's also the lady in the painting.

If you've been riding for as many years as I have, you'll recognize Scott Jacobs work in about a half second.  No other artist can paint chrome quite like Scott does.....where it actually looks like chrome that you can touch.....see the reflections in.....

Olivia is Scott's daughter.  I'd met Scott briefly at an art gallery in Sacramento many, many years ago (I believe it was in the late 80s or early 90s) and I vaguely remembered that he was from back east.....New Jersey I believe.  So I asked Olivia what she was doing in Deadwood.  Long story short, the whole family moved to Deadwood and Scott opened his gallery here.  He was actually upstairs painting in his studio at the time we were talking with Olivia.

It was about this time that Sharon, Scott's wife, came down the stairs and we met her also.  Both very beautiful ladies!  Scott is a lucky man....living life large.  I asked if I could take some pics for this forum and that was not a problem....just the nicest people.

This is also Olivia....

And how many of you know about the Cannonball Century Race?  It was coast to coast, 3,306 miles and the bikes were all at least 100 years old.  Both Scott and Sharon rode in that race.  I remember it so well because it ended in Escondido, Ca. and we were living in San Diego at the time.  Big news for the motorcycle community.  Here's a youtube video ......

By the way, the Cannonball Race for 2018 will be going from Portland, Maine to Portland, Ore.  Kirk we sure expect to see some of your outstanding photography of those bikes since they start out in your back yard in Maine.

Scott's studio happens to be in the building where they caught Jack McCall, the guy that shot Wild Bill Hickock....

Footnote:  The Harley t-shirt shop is across the street from Scott Jacobs studio.  Babe and I walked over and looked at the logos on the back.  About the time that I started thinking "one of the t-shirts from Scott Jacobs would be much more unique than just another Harley shirt....", Babe said it out loud to me "if you're going to buy another shirt I think you should get a Scott Jacobs......at least it'll be more unique".  An artist of his caliber and uniqueness to the motorcycle world....probably more than I'd like to pay for a shirt was running through my head as we walked back across the street.  To my surprise....a better quality shirt, Scott Jacobs design on the shirt and a long sleeve, made in the USA, thermal type shirt was less than a t-shirt across the street.  So the next time you're in Deadwood....stop in the Scott Jacobs studio and get yourself a shirt that's a little more unique.  And for all you high rollers, you can pick up an original or two Scott Jacobs art work to put in your man cave with all your CVOs!  :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks JC for the excellent pictures and descriptions. We have been going out to Sturgis about every year since 1996 and your photos are fun to see as we have seen most of them in person.

I have never seen the Iron Mountain sign at Spokane Creek Campground before, will have to ad a pic of it next year when we get back. We will have to spend some time at Ft. Meade as we have always just driven by it.

I really appreciate your time and effort documenting your road trips on the site.

We're at an Indian Casino at the South Dakota-Nebraska state line as I write this.  Interesting.....no cell reception to text or call but we still have internet through our Verizon Jet Pack.

bigsixman, I know what you mean.....I've been to all of those places many times, drove by the Old Ft. Meade many times and would see the signs that say VA Hospital but never paid much attention beyond that.  I thought that those that have only been for the bike rally might enjoy seeing it from a different perspective.  It was a great week for us.

The sign at Spokane Creek Campground (at the end of the wild life loop.....or the begining, depending on which way you're going) is new.  I'd never seen it before and it was very fresh paint.  I'm thinking they did it just before the rally this year.  Next year it'll be a busy place to stop and get your pic taken with the signs.  Nice RV park and campground and store there, also.

We never realized how many RV parks there are in the Black Hills until we rode through this time.  It's interesting all the things you see and notice that you don't during bike week because you're to busy watching out for all the other bikes out there.....and the drunks that shouldn't even be on a bike.

Yes, it was Hwy. 83 just north of Valentine.  Left there at 6:30 a.m. and it's now 6:10 p.m.  We've been set up here in Witchata, Ks. for about half hour.  It has poured rain unlike I've seen in many years......almost every mile of it!  Have an appt. in Norman, Okla. to get disc brakes put on this beast and the forecast for there for Wed. & Thur. is low 80s.  Then on to the Grand Design dealership in Little Rock, Ark. by the weekend.

Well, we spent the winter here in Athens, Texas.  Certainly an interesting state.  Snowed while we were in McAllen, Tex. (Mexico boarder) and we liked both San Antonio and Dallas/Ft. Worth areas.  Current news....a police officer in Farmers Branch was convicted of murder after chasing down a 16 yr. old that was breaking in to his car.  A sherriffs deputy was just convicted of stealing guns from the evidence locker and selling them back out on the street.  Wild, wild west folks......or Don't Mess With Texas.

We're going to drive up to Wichita Falls to visit my niece on Fri.  This Sat. we will be pulling out of Texas and headed to Florida for a couple of months.  :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

Yes Tim, it was very different without the hundreds of thousands of other bikes in the area.  At the dealership they were able to take me right in.  Riding the Black Hills was almost lonely.  LOL   But I was truely enjoying every minute of it.  I went back several times in that week or ten days that I was there.  Looking forward to spending an entire summer there.  :2vrolijk_21:

Very nice report on the shocks. Glad Orrin was able to take care of you. I need to do something regarding my suspension and will consider SS more seriously now. And I’ll try to keep better track of you so we can hook-up in the Fall, when the Riding is MUCH better here.

P.S. if you haven’t yet, consider running over to Jefferson before you leave the area - historic town with some interesting shopping and great food.

When i was there during the rally, one of the days we didn't get a particularly early start for Needles Hwy and the surrounding area...and it was PACKED. Miles and miles of bikes stacked up and not moving very quickly. So, the next day we got up much earlier and made a beeline for the Pigtail bridges and the nearby tunnels and rode thru there back and forth for at least two hours with it all to ourselves. Took a ton of cool pics and totally enjoyed the riding. I may have to follow your example and do an off season ride up there to see more of the area. It's one of the most beautiful places I've ridden. I really enjoy the loop of Needles Highway. I think I've done it at least ten times thru all different kinds of weather, lol, didn't care much for the rain deluges tho.
Thanks again for posting the pics.

Went for a ride with Harry (Unbalanced), John (johnsachs) and Stuart (CVOStu) yesterday and the photos that I took on that ride are posted in Harry's ride report here.....   https://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=114822.msg1458302#msg1458302

I passed on their ride today.  I stayed up till about 1:30 a.m. this morning and so I wasn't able to get it together early enough to join them today.  However, I did go for a little solo ride this afternoon....maybe 35-40 miles out and back.

My first stop was at Nelson's Outdoor Resort and Airboat Rides Unlimited on the Ocklawaha River to inquire about the air boat rides  :o   I settled for taking a look around their place and passed on the air boat ride for today.....

Soon I wondered upon a place that I remembered Harry telling us about yesterday, Gator Joe's.  So....I had to swing by and take a peek.....

With all the activity at Gator Joe's today, I decided to cruise on around the lake to see if Eatons Beach had any more activity than it did yesterday.  We must have just showed up to early yesterday because today it was so crowded that I didn't even try to get inside.....

We've had a great time here in the southeast.  I'm going to get busy posting more pics for all of you.  And for those that have never made it out here, hopefully these photos will help motivate you to make it happen before it's too late....

Here's a couple links to individual ride reports in this journey.  First, we left our RV in Central Florida (up near Daytona) and rode down to Key West.....

We were supposed to roll up to St. Augustine, Fl for a week.  Billed as the oldest city in America however, native Americans might not agree with that.  News flash of a lighting storm with baseball size hail was projected for the day after we were supposed to arrive.  Being in an RV, ya just don't want to question that kind of warning so we rolled north to the home of our friend Jock.  Most of you don't know, but Jock and I have rode in many states across this country together, as far west as California and as far east as Florida and many states in between.....memories.

There is a lot to see in and around Savannah and we were not disappointed.  One of our first stops was the Wormsloe Plantation where the remains of the oldest structure in Georgia is....

and our tour guide.  I didn't know it was period costume so I had to ask why he was dressed like that and why is he barefoot....several people told me quietly "I'm sure glad you asked cuz we were wondering".  LOL  He was very well informed and provided a lot of information.

We had a great time in Savannah, Ga. and Hilton Head, SC but it was time for us to roll on up to our next destination, Charleston, SC.  As we left Jock and Janet in Savannah, Jock mentioned to me to be sure to visit Boone Hall Plantation.  With a recommendation from the master.....how could we not?

You really get kind of good at riding in the sand in the south.  At the RV park in Umatilla, Fl. I overheard a lady at the dog park saying "if it was a dirt road it wasn't in Florida.......Florida doesn't have any dirt, it's all sand!".  While I found that to be true, I do believe that sand stretches as far north, near the coast, as Charleston, SC.  Anytime you get off of the pavement you're in sand.

This plantation is the oldest, continuous operating plantation in North America.  It's over 200 yrs. old and still operating and yes.......the driveway is still sand!

It is a very long lane to the plantation home.....I would have liked to have been here when the trees were in full bloom but they told me I'm about three weeks to early.

Finally, I can see what I think is the house.....

and a look back out the gates and back down the entry drive towards the street.....

The first crops grown on a couple thousand acres was indigo.  Indigo is used as a dye and sold solely to Britain's textile industry up until the American Revolution.  Once the war was over, Britain would no longer buy indigo from America and so they had to change their crops quickly to cotton, corn and a few other crops, as well as brick making.  At one time this plantation had one of the larges brick making operations in America and this is where many of the bricks that built Charleston after the big fire burned all of the wood buildings downtown.  They also had one of the larges and most modern gin mills in the nation.  Gin mill is simply short for engine mill.....after it became automated to make yarn and thread out of cotton.

Here is what's left of that first gin mill.....

The slave quarters are still standing.  The brick quarters were for the "house slaves".  They cleaned or cooked or watched the little children of the plantation owner's family, etc.  The field slaves were housed in wood quarters that are no longer standing...

Each of the quarters housed up to 15 slaves...sometimes extended families and sometimes no relations at all, in the same house.....   (https://farm1.staticflickr.com/869/41037124852_192fe5ed9f_b.jpg)

Here we have the plantation home and gardens....

This lady is a descendant of slaves from this plantation and today she and her family weaves sea grass baskets, matts, etc. to sell to the tourists at the plantation, much as her great, great grandmother did long ago.  Very talented, for sure!

The plantation company store.  When slavery was abolished many of the slaves stayed on, doing the same thing and getting pay chits that they could spend in the plantation store.  By the time they paid for their housing, food, etc. there really wasn't much left for them to spend in the store.

A tractor pulls a couple of wagons around the 200 acres left of this plantation.  Most of the crops are gone....still a few of what once was the largest pecan grove in the country.  They now grown strawberries, boysenberries, corn, peaches, etc.

Time to roll......but I have to stop and get "that" pic of my orange and black!

We had a good time exploring the historic district in downtown Charleston however, I forgot my Nikon.  All the photos I took with my cell phone got posted on facebook but I don't have any to post here.  I will say that we've enjoyed everything in the south from Florida to Savannah to Charleston.....where we finally met MikeyT and his wife.  We moved on from Charleston to Maggie Valley where we spent a week riding all over the Smokey Mountains and Blue Ridge Parkway.  I'll be posting some of those pics later...

Next, we moved on to Chattanooga.

First stop was the Incline Railway....to the top of Lookout Mountain.

Boarding at the bottom.....

Billed as the World's Steepest Incline Railway......I believe it.

In this pic you can see the steep angle that the car is actually built at.  The front seat is far below the back seat.  And, you can look through the vista dome roof and see the landscape below, at the bottom of the mountain.  NOTE:  I sit my Nikon on the floor beside my seat at the back of the train to get this shot on our way down.

To demonstrate the steep grade, looking out the front window of the car we see an overpass that traffic uses to climb to the top of Lookout Mountain and we actually drop low enough that we go under that overpass....

We left Chattanooga and moved on up the road to Nashville.  Nashville is one city that I'd never been to before, so it was all new to me.  We stayed at a gated RV resort on a lake just outside of town....

We made a trip downtown and checked out all the places on Broadway.  First stop was ground zero for country & western every since I can remember my parents watching the Grand Ol' Opry on TV....the Ryman Auditorium, home of The Grand Ol' Opry.

Nudie's Honky Tonk.....I have to say that Babe seemed a little miffed when she walked across the street and looked in the window and nobody was nude.  :huepfenlol2:

A club on the corner between Broadway and the Ryman Auditorium has a wall that's covered in photographs of country artist that have played there over the years and decades.  On the outside there's a mural of a few well known artists of various ages but in the mural all the artists are young.  A pretty cool mural....

Nashville has some very modern buildings downtown but there's also many, many cranes up in the air......they are building highrise buildings everywhere.  NOTE:  The window washer high up on this building are not using scaffolds.  They are each on their own ropes and they started at the top and are working their way down.  Each has their own bucket of water, sponge and squeege.  It was very interesting watching them and they were moving very fast.  They would drop to the next floor down in maybe 2-3 seconds and were very precise in their stop.

Two 24 story buildings going up directly across the street from the Ryman Auditorium that will dwarf it and all the two and three story buildings on Broadway....

Thanks for the pictures of the back yard, JC.  The Rock City ones bring back very fond memories as my grandparents had a "Rock City Barn" on their property in NE Alabama.  Part of the payment for use of their roof was $50 and two season passes to Rock City so we went a BUNCH when I was a kid.  Taking the kids and grandkids makes that many more memories.

You took a picture of Point Park but did y'all visit/walk around?  Great history there.

Yes, we did walk all around Point Park and visited the little civil war museum and watched the video, etc.  What ever I post pics of isn't near what all we did.  Also, I take a lot of pics with my Nikon to post here and take a lot of pics with my phone that I post on FB right away.  I believe the pics of Point Park ended up on my FB page.   I try not to put the same pics on both places but some times that gets to be challenging.   :nixweiss:

Understood....if'n I did the bookface, I could see 'em... ;D

Glad you walked around.  There are some great views off Lookout Mt. along with lots of history.  Glad you enjoyed Nashville, too.  Great town to visit but one heck of a bad place to drive/ride.
