Title: Wont Start ... I'm new here...
Post by: MoeMuny on February 19, 2018, 09:43:20 PM
Hi,
I am new here, I have a 2012 CVO softail convertible that wont start.
It has the hands free setup so no main ignition switch just the run stop on the right hand controls.

When I connect the battery all I get is the left turn signal and Neutral lights on the tank blinking. No other dash lights light up.
no headlight either. If I tilt the bike up sometimes the alarm will chirp or go off but thats it... nothing else.

Let me say I have checked the obvious fuses are ok, new keyfob batteries I even put in a new main battery and double checked all connectors.

Any and idea would be appreciated.

Has it ever started for you?

Have you recently dropped the bike?

There is a Bank Angle Sensor that will kill the bike if tipped over, look up the process to reset it (can't hurt anything)?

New battery, make sure you hooked up pos to pos and neg to neg (I know, silly huh?)  Charge new battery just to be sure.

Does the fuel pump cycle when you turn run-stop switch on?

Welcome to the site....it will take about a year before folks on here stop raggin' on ya.

No start, do you mean no crank? If so than check the ground to frame, remove it and clean it real good. Do the same with positive cable, again do both ends from the battery. Than be sure you clear alarm with the fob.
You may need to use a test light to see if the signal to the starter from the switch is present.

Any time you plan to disconnect the battery you should have a working security fob in range and switch the ignition on (run switch to RUN on bikes with no separate ignition switch), then pull the main fuse.  With the main fuse removed, set the run switch back to OFF and then disconnect the battery.  This procedure will turn the security system off before you disconnect battery power.  If you just disconnect the battery without turning off the security system first, the system will assume a potential thief has cut the battery cable.

Thanks for the replies!!! I will try and answer all questions, and I really do appreciate the help!!!

The bike is new to me and I bought it as is, doesn't start, so I started from the basics. I got a screaming deal on it.

I dont believe the bike has been dropped, no obvious signs of it, but I looked in the service manual about the bank angle sensor and it seems that it gets reset every off/on switch cycle.

The new battery was put in correctly, and has a good charge.
Fuel pump does not cycle, ever. I have never heard it

by no start I mean no crank no noise no click nada nothing, I will check the ground to frame tonight.
I am not sure what you mean by clear the alarm with the fob this is the handsfree fob so there are no buttons on it.

fob was in my pocket without a cellphone near when I disconnected/connected the battery.

appreciate the help keep um coming!!!

This is good to know! I will do this from here on out... is there a way to reset the security system?

Thanks!!

Try following the procedure I mentioned to turn off the security system and disconnect the battery.  Wait a few minutes and then reconnect the battery and install the main fuse.  I've heard some say this worked for them, but if it doesn't you may need to get help from a technician (Harley or independent) with a scan tool.

Are the instruments energizing or is the bike completely dead?

Pretty sure you went over it when you did your first checks, but have you checked the main fuse to see if it is good?

Can't really go wrong with Geoff over there at Cycledocter. He is a great guy to work with. Better than paying a stealership 115+ an hour and he won't B.S. you either.
