2017 cvo pro street breakout. Performed 1st service yesterday. Noticed a bit of shavings (not the powdery kind) kind of looks like small wood splinters. Question is... how much is normal (if any at all) for 1st service? Service was done at 1047 miles.

IMO for the first service after break in it doesn't look abnormal. I'd expect the amount of debris to decrease with subsequent oil changes

That looks more like my primary drain

Ride it for 10k miles and tell us how it goes.

WOW...Transmission?
I have yet to see anything on my transmission plug.
Good luck and let us know what you find out.

Do you get chip of metal on your primary plug?
All I get is gray muddy paste....but no metal chips.

Both chips and muddy paste, what ever is left of my compensator

"0" is normal, in the 11yrs of oil change never any bits on the transmission plug only one time had bits on the primary plug, repaired that fault now just clutch powder.
I'd do a couple more oil drains in a 500mile range you can put the same oil back in (poor it through a fine mesh strainer) . It's to see if there's any more bits accumulated on the plug.
Those shavings are some what to big to ignore. Save the bits to show the dealership for any warranty

What he said ^. That's a lot of significant sized pieces on that plug, much more than I've ever seen. Harley either left a lot of trash in the cases when they assembled the trans, or something's being chewed on. I like Longlast's recommendation, drain it a few more times at low mile intervals and see if you continue to get pieces of metal. If you don't, it may be OK to assume they just left some machining trash in the trans during assembly. If it doesn't clear up, see your dealership.

on my 13 RG trans plug looked like that and it turned out that it had a bad main bearing or somn along those lines, also had a bad vibration under heavy throttle … thinking back, that bike broke every thing that was hooked to the crank shaft on back

Does look like more than normal for a transmission. Keep an eye on that. If mine would change trans oil at 5k when the engine oil change is done to check to see if same/less metal.

In my experience that is pretty standard residue for the first tranny fluid change.
In my experience: I always change all 3 holes every time I do a oil service. A quart of oil is cheap on a comparative basis.
If it nags at you, I would go another 500 miles and do another change. The residue will be less and the color will remain closer to new(er) oil.
A side benefit is that your tranny will shift better, smoother and the lugs won’t clunk as much. You will be able to find neutral a lot easier and the neutral light will light up. The metal trash ends up on the end of the neutral light sensor and causes the light not to work.
Ride safe.

That is not normal! I work on these every day and have done thousands of 1K services. Is the bike still under factory warranty? If so then I would take the picture to the dealer and demand a tear down and inspection of the transmission.

IN ALL DUE RESPECT:
It’s been normal for over 25 plus years.
As long as HD continues to make transmissions and not back cut the gears you’re going to see metal residue for a couple of fluid changes.
Most long time owners who know this change the fluid a couple of times during the first 1k miles.
Easy Peasy!!

A little "fur" I can and do expect. If you zoom in on the pic you can see what looks like the edge or tip of one of the gear teeth, this is not normal.

Exactly! Those are relatively large pieces, not just the normal fine particles you might expect on a first oil change.

Maybe maybe not. But I’ll bet we all agree that if he brings it into the dealer now they are going to say “it’s normal”, change the fluid and five it back to him.
If it isn’t already, it needs to make some noise or fail completely before they will think about getting into the internals.
