Title: Windshield detachable?
Post by: 2soaper on August 17, 2004, 11:37:48 PM
I went to the dealer today to ask about a windshield for when I take 3 to 4 hundred mile rides in a day.  The tach gets in the way of any that Harley makes and the guy said he didn't believe Harley would be making any to fit the SEfatboy.  Any ideas where I may find?

As a last resort, If you cannot find one or HD decides not to take care of you guys with the fatboys'- The guys on the Dyna threads came up with a nice way to get around the front end on theirs by cutting a standard windshield to fit around the headlight cover and putting some edging around the cut out portions. Check em' out!  Looks Great Guys!

Don't know if it would work for you or not  [smiley=nixweiss.gif], since I unfortunately havn't seen the CVO Fatboy in person....

Has anyone made the modification on their windshield to have it fit the FLSTFSE with the tach?

Reo, I was going to put a Windvest on the bike but they did not have a bracket to fit it.  They may now.  I instead decided to go with 58278-95 detachable windshield low profile.  I ordered a couple of days ago from all of our friend Chicago Harley. The dealer I discovered did not know what he was talking about locally!

After getting a chance to make some long high speed expressway runs I found there seems to be an updraft problem with using the detachable windshield. I found a fix by using the chrome wind deflector. http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441849437&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302289727&bmUID=1113966868402&bmLocale=en_US

Not a good pic but here is what they look like installed.

Good Idea Reo,
do those deflectors attach to the windshield or to the forks? are they removed with the windshield?
i was thinkin on ordering the smoked low profile  replacement windshield...it runs about 150 bucks..I'm beginning to feel like the king size windshield is exactly what it is,,,
KINGSIZE. i figure  i could interchange between the two on the existing braket.  perhaps i'll add that  deflector set also ,it Looks great!!  more chrome ,more chrome  yea!  [smiley=laugh.gif]

Can you help me out?  I need the p/n's for the windshield (do you know if a low profile is available?).  I am thinking of p/n#58278-95?    & the aux lite kit (how did you wire for new lamps?)

Thanks
Mike

I used the nostalgic windshield 57140-05, I hate the look of the windshield so I probably wont get a short one but for long rides I like the looks of this one better than 58278-95. As far as wiring I added two new circuits in my fuse box, one for the led lights and one for the aux lights. I didnt like the idea of having the aux lights on the low beam circuit. for one they stay on with the high beams and if I loose a fuse on the headlights I have aux lights and vice-versa.

I want to talk to you about how you did the aux lights next week. Maybe over a beer or even two...

Can't handle them grown up drinks anymore but while I'm having my sody-pop I'm sure we will have much to discuss.

Reo i hooked my aux  lights up to the extra lead  on the headlight wiring  and the aux lights shut off  when i turn on the high beam, but i do agree with you  about hooking  them up on a separate circuit. also  i checked about the low profile smoked windshield and got some negative info on it .the guy i talked to said  the wind blew his helmet around too much and he wanted a kingsize instead . but i think im goin to get one and find out  for myself. Did you use a docking kit for windshield or did aux lite kit have all the hardware to mount both?

I had all this stuff installed before taking delivery of the bike. Big mistake because the dealer installed the wrong aux light kit, so I had to change it later. But the new light kit I got in the box, included mounting bolts but wont work with the detachable windshield. I'm not sure the detachable windshield will come with the docking kit but knowing the Moco my guess is no.

The Low Profile shield that I got from HD did come with the docking kit hardware. My husband and myself installed it ourselved. It's very easy too. Just remove the two bolts on each side of the forks and replace them with a nice chrome plate and two new bolts that come with the shield, they have the rubber mounts on them for the shield. Still leaves you with a nice look when your not running with the shield on.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]  Sandy

Memphis Shades also makes a nice windshiled for these bikes. The dealer near my house had a SEFATBOY in the red with a red tinted Memphis Shades windshield on it and it looked really nice. I am coming off a Heritage Classic to this bike and figure its not even worth the money since the detacheable from my heritage is still on the shelf where it was 2 weeks after I took delivery of that bike.I hate the wind buffeting effect caused when 18 wheelers blow by throwing the front end all around!
