2017 Cody / Yellowstone GTG
« on: September 13, 2017, 03:07:25 PM »

John, Alan and I launched from NorCal and spent the first night in Winnemucca NV. The next day we stopped at the HD Dealer in Elko, NV to buy shirts for the exchange.

We spent the second night in Pocatello, ID, and along the way stopped at the Palisades Dam.

The 3rd night was in Jackson, WY where we met up with Denise, James and Cynthia.  We had dinner at The Million Dollar Cowboy Restaurant, and drinks at the Silver Dollar Saloon. The next day we enjoyed a delicious breakfast, and had our photo taken in the Antler Arch.

Then it was off through the Grand Tetons and into Yellowstone.

Passing through The Fishing Bridge we saw our first buffalo! I ate a Bison burger in its honor.

The Best Western Cody was very accommodating. They set up a bike wash station for us, and each day we were greeted by a different creature made up from rolled and folded towels!

Monday we headed out to Beartooth Pass and lunch in Red Lodge.

Tuesday we headed back into the park. Once inside we split up, some went south to see Old Faithful, and others went north to see the geysers of Norris Basin and Mammoth Hot Springs.

Wednesday was our off the bike day. Our group rates granted us access to The Cody Museum Of The West, as well as buffet dinner and reserved front row seating to an enjoyable music show that had us laughing and singing along.

Thursday was back to Yellowstone where we marveled at the Yellowstone Grand Canyon. In the park we saw so many buffalo. One even crossed my path just a few feet away!

On the way back we visited Heart Mountain where thousands of Japanese Americans were interned during WWII. It was a somber moment made more touching as one of our group had family history there.

Passing though Cody we stopped to watch “Buffalo Bill” host a very campy and silly “Gun Battle” in the streets of Cody.

Thursday was topped off with a dinner and dancing to live music at Cassie’s Steakhouse, followed by the ever popular T-Shift Exchange!

Friday we said our good byes and headed out. Our path took us back into the park, and we stopped at Old Faithful for lunch.

We spent one more night in Jackson, and headed out the next day. The Motorcycle Gods were good to us and kept the temps cool and even all through Nevada.  The only problem we had was with my bike, when the splines on shifter lever finally gave out, and I was left with a loose shifter. A short hour later we managed to align the few remaining splines and I was on the road again.

By the time we made it to Reno, the temps had climbed back into the upper 80s.

Our final night on the road was spent in Boom Town on the California / Nevada border. We treated ourselves to the Lobster Buffet. Alan ate 4 lobsters, John and I had 3 each, along with oysters and shrimps.

By 3:30PM Monday I was home and my filthy bug covered bike was in the garage. Two hours later the thunder and rain came. Talk about perfect timing!

Even though the group was smaller than anticipated, a fun time was had by all. Although we could smell the smoke from the Montana fires, we were never inconvenienced. We never hit any rain, or heavy traffic to speak of.

Can’t wait for next year, wherever it may be!

Wow Mark great pics. Thanks for posting.  I had planned to be there but unfortunately could not make it.  Looks like everyone had a great time but then again how could you not given the most excellent location.  Hope to see everyone next year.

Thanks for the compliments!

Gotta love the elevation and non California gas. On the freeway running at 75-80mph I averaged 42mpgs, overall in Wyoming and Montana it was 48mpgs, and in the park I once got 50mpgs! I'm sure it will drop again now that I am back at sea level.

I'll go back there again someday as there is just so much to see and do. There is nothing like riding a motorcycle in the park.

And finally,.....

I recall there being a lot of discussion as to why we wanted to pick the week of Labor Day to hold the GTG in Yellowstone, and many wondered if we could go a week or more later.

This is Yellowstone 1 week later.
