I'm looking for opinions on to buy another extended warranty. Not looking to purchase another CVO  but my 2011 CVO Ultra Classic's warranty will be running out in January 2018. It presently has 41,000 miles on it with original lifters. I've had very few problems with it but now as the miles rise, the potential is there to start having more problems.

A 4 year extended warranty without tire & wheel would cost $3400. $78 per month.
 
I'm leaning on replacing the lifters & then roll the dice as far as future problems.

Just looking for everyone thoughts about this.

My extended warranty paid off on my ‘11 but that price sounds high. Maybe it’s because of the mileage and age. This sounds like 2nd extended warranty on this bike.

My extended warranty has more than paid for itself, on all my bikes since 2002. On a 2011 with only 41k miles, you don't ride as much as I do and that's relevant.  You have to weigh how much you ride, the mileage of the bike currently against the cost of the extended warranty.

By the way, you can shop for better pricing on the extended warranty.....it's not set in stone and different dealerships will have different prices just like they do on their bikes.

Consider how many repairs you could perform with $3400.  Start by spending a few hundred bucks on replacing the lifters and inner cam bearings, and then factor in doing lifters again every 15k miles as insurance.  You'd still have over $2500 in the bank.  What else do you think is going to fail?  Wheel bearings are relatively cheap.  If the electronics haven't already failed by now, odds are quite good they won't going forward.  The ESP doesn't cover most of the other stuff that might fail strictly due to age.  Btw, how much money did the original ESP "save" you?  Not everyone has JC's history of always making out like a bandit on his ESP purchases.  In fact, most people do not.  Otherwise the ESP companies would have to raise their rates or go broke.

While it might give us some quite well earned satisfaction that a well earned ESP actually more than paid for itself that still raises a significant question.  That it paid for itself repetitively even more so.  The question obviously being "should that much (covered) stuff actually be breaking?"  If there are that many failures it should make a guy at least think about far more than just getting another ESP.

 i have a 2011 with 41500 mi and  extended warranty. (only extended warranty i have ever bought)it, has more than paid for itself as jerry said this cannot happen very often.i suppose that is why you were quoted 3400.00 but, with the prices palmer has advertised i would strongly consider it. no, i think i will give it a try. let us know what you decide. i am going back and review the plan palmer offers. anyone have any feedback on this esp.

I just had the engine replaced in my 2015 CVO Limited using the Cornerstone ESP from Jim Palmer. So it paid for itself. I would recommend the plan.

Lifters went and took out the engine. There were metal shavings everywhere. They asked for a comparison between rebuilding and replacement. After the adjuster looked at it, they agreed to do the replacement.

It seemed to take a little time to accomplish but I can't say if it the insurance company or the dealer or both that caused the delay. It did however get cometed at zero out of pocket, no deductible.

The bike is back in the shop now to replace the lifters on the new engine after 650 miles. That is the MoCo problem now.

You can say that again! This is the first ESP I bought on anything.  I always skip buying them as they usually just make money for the insurance company. That's why you can't buy a screw driver without someone trying to sell an extended warranty.

Seems like your story is the total opposite of mine. I put 8000 miles on and the engine went.

My 09 CVO RG lifters failed at 46K miles.  My 15 CVO RGU with the improved lifters had lifter failure at 44K miles, bike as right at 2 years old.  Motor had to be replaced, glad it was under warranty.

Had my '11 SERGU crap a lifter on day 2 of a 7 day road trip. HD dealer first changed spark plugs and said it was good to go. Lol. Got to end of dealer parking lot and check engine light came back on. Had extended warranty, could have had engine pretty much replaced, choose to buy '16 SERGU instead. My decision was based on value of '11 at time Vs waiting 2 more years and adding many more miles (had 41K on it) to then trade it in. That made my decision.

I'd say if you plan on keeping the bike, the extended warranty is worth it, maybe not at that price, only because you may not have $2,500 laying around if something fails on the bike and the payment plan helps with that.

I am an insurance adjuster, EVERY day I meet people who are using their insurance, and wished they had bought more or better coverage.

I wouldn't wait for the original lifters to go; might be somewhere you don't want to sit around for days on end--like on a road trip.  They don't show metal in the oil until it's too late.

I replaced the lifters and inner cam bearings on mine at 38K miles.  Bike has 47K on it now and runs great.

That's the one problem with warranty work. They don't pay for preventive maintenance. They only pay when there's a failure.

No "insurance" pays for maintenance. All pay for most "sudden and accidental" events. The theory is if you "maintain" your stuff, it won't suddenly break

Very true.  OP is trying to decide if he wants to buy another ESP.  My thinking is to replace lifters, or do 117 kit with good lifters--either way, get better value than the ESP provides unless something bigger (trans, crank) goes bad.

X-2 on Boardtracker. It's a "Corrnerstone" ESP. Same company undewrites   for Artic Cat & Suzuki.  Mine paid off like clockwork and 0 deductible, I will buy another one when mine runs out

Be aware of some changes to the ESP contract they offer.  I just purchased a stand alone tire & wheel from them for my new Tri-Glide.  When I received the contract by email I noticed $ limitations on what it would pay per incident and for the life of the contract.  I also noticed it was not Cornerstone.  Further conversation with Jim's admin person, Kathy, revealed that they switched carriers earlier this year for an ESP administered by First Extended Service Corp. out of Chicago.  Reason being that Cornerstone could not write ESPs in California or Florida - two VERY big markets for sure and the new administrator could write there.

BUT with that being said they can STILL write Cornerstone ESP everywhere except CA and FL so Kathy voided the contract and issued a new one by Cornerstone.

Now this pertained to the tire and wheel only.  I had her send me the mechanical contract from First Extended and a from a cursory reading and further discussion with Kathy I think it is OK.  But the tire and wheel coverage by them is too limited imo.

So discuss with Kathy or Jim which contract would be best for you.

All I can go by is my own experience... Had the 7 years plan on my '08 Duracell and when I got close to 100k on the dial I looked into extending the warranty for a second time before it was too late... Combination of years and mileage making purchasing it impossible once you go over the mark.

Up to that point I had very little go wrong with my bike, but was concerned with the miles adding up, so I paid $1,700 to extend the warranty for another 3 years, giving me a total of 10 years of warranty.

3 months after purchasing it ended up in the shop and thankfully the $3,000. + repair was fully covered.  Since then I've had 2 more claims for electrical problems, so I'm real happy that I went for the added insurance of extending the warranty.

Not only did ESPs pay for engine replacement on my 2007 and my 2012 CVO Ultras but on my 2012 it paid for these items also:

Audio overlay wire harness (intercom was malfunctioning) - $598.10
iPod harness intermetiate and docking as it would lose connection - $504.83
Ignition switch as the power lock would not work - $723.80
XM satellite radio module as it malfunctioned - $692.82

So exclusive of total engine rebuild ESP paid over $2,000 in other repairs.  So yeah I'm a believer and a fan of ESP - when it comes to Harleys.
