2018 CVO Total Cost of Ownership over 7 years / 75,000 miles
« on: November 22, 2017, 06:06:48 PM »

Just for fun I thought I would run a worksheet on the TCO of a new 2018 CVO.

Assumptions are:
No modifications. No accessories. No nothing else.
MoCo 7/75 ESP at $3000
Serviced on time.
10,000 miles a year.
15,000 miles on a set of tires.
Tire price based on a quote I got last week at Twister City HD in Wichita KS.
Brake flush price based on what I paid this year at Pig Trail HD, Rogers AR.
SVC parts is Syn3 only in all three holes at $13/qt. No gaskets included.

I'd like this to be a living document meaning if my numbers are off please let me know and I'll plug them in.

10k miles a year is a little shy, isn't it?

Depends on the rider. For some the total is maybe 1.5 or 2k a year. Others turn in 25k a year. What do you tell the insurance company?

Adjustments made for hyd clutch.
Registration and property tax not included - applies to an F150 equally.
No deductibles on services, this is not for ESP warranty work, just maintenance.

I added a section for Do It Yourself and realized a $12k savings.

So go ahead and get that big bore kit, cams, pipes, and tune and do your own lifters.  You will come out ahead if you don't get the ESP, and don't take your bike in every 5k miles.

bla Bla Bla ya ya ya....

I've seen many folks on here try to figure out if they should buy the ESP.  This kind of puts that into perspective.

With the new rules or enforcement of no mods on the 2018's or your warranty is kaput, this puts that into perspective as well.

Personally, I won't buy anything newer than a 2013, but I have different reasons.

Don't buy the ESP, Do your own maintenance, screw the warranty, and you'll be $12,700 ahead at the end of 7 years.  Even if you need a major repair, several times, you'll still be way ahead.

But nobody ever said anyone who pays over $45,000 for a motorcycle was really very bright in the first place. And to buy them year after year....

I've done the same sort of thing to both track costs and budget and find it useful.

I suppose you don't need this sort of thing if you are either very wealthy or simply don't manage your money.

... and in Canada not only do we pay way more for a CVO ($54k+),
with us being in kilometers (.06k vs. 1 mile) our price per mile is way more!  ;D

Just ride the heck out of it and enjoy!

I was not basing on my miles, but a fair guess at an average for many riders.  I ride about 15k miles a year most years.

Then there's that "Special Group" that get a CVO (or 2, 3 or 4) and drop another $10k to $20k even $30k+ into them  :coolblue:
