Fitting '07 up cam bearing to '99-'05 cases
« on: June 12, 2018, 01:32:32 PM »

Anyone have thought on it? Is it a simple matter of boring the holes?

Darkhorse does it. Anyone else do it?

It sure would open up cam choices for an early case using '07 cam plate/tensioner parts.

There still are conversion cams on the market that are machined for the old size inner cam bearing and the new plain outer bearings in the 2007 and up cam plates, so my first choice would be checking what's available in a conversion cam.  But you're right, you will get a much larger choice if you go with a late model cam.  The reason I didn't do that is I had no plans on disassembling the cases to have the machine work done and I don't trust myself or anyone else to bore those holes oversize with the engine assembled.  Too many bad things can happen.  If you have the cases apart anyway, then by all means have the inner cam bearing bores resized to the late model specs.

Have you considered finding the late model cams you want and then just having the inner bearing journals resized for the older inner bearings?

They make inner rings for the needle bearings. Put the cams between centers and turn the journal down to 5/8 and press on the inner ring that is 7/8 OD. If the cases are apart bore them as others said.

Jerry, I agree, no way I'd do it w/o cases being bare.

My SE251s are '07 cams. All related parts are '07. They were cut down and a hard race pressed on to fit the smaller early inner cam bearings. However, I did not personally do this, and I no longer have access to the shop that did.

John, yours were done on a lathe? Any hints on tooling and feed rate? [no machinist here, dumb tin banger]. I've looked for races, no luck. Would you have a source?

HD Street, simple as looking in a bearing catalog at inner races for the cam bearing [assuming they are a std bearing].

How much press?

This make it easier for everyone and would allow all grinds.

Andrews and Wood have conversion cams, but neither offers every one of their grinds as such. Anyone else add to that list? I want to remember SE offering them some years ago to fit all '07 parts, not what they offer now. I may be wrong on that.....

Fafner IR-1012 listed as 5/8" x 7/8" x  3/4" wide. Sound right?
Koyo lists IR-1012 -OH.

I will inquire at friendly local bearing house.

Thanks!

Anytime I have a set of early cases apart for a build, I always, using a cam plate for alignment, bore the cam bearing holes in the case to accept the later bearings.  ;)

Boring those holes for later bearings is not difficult at all. Stripping the cases down is the hardest part.

You guys care to publish the proper bore diameter and depth for the big bearings.

Thanks

Randy at hyperformance does the cam races and the case work as a service

Not particularly expensive at all

I had a reamer made to open up the bearing bores for repair, could have a reamer made to open up the early cam bearing bores......quick and accurate
