Drive Belt
« on: April 26, 2008, 05:06:08 AM »

I am just wondering how many miles to expect out of a drive belt.
Should it be changed at a certain milage?
I have not looked very hard but my manual says inspect for damage & replace if it is starting to fray on edges.

Cheers

the only times i have seen a belt break is from the "wheelie / burn out" adrenalin junkies, other than that damage can b caused from a stone or other foreign body getting trapped in belt/ pully! :2vrolijk_21:

most of the broken belts I've seen are from rocks or misalignment,  I've seen more with 100k on the odometer then broken so i hope you have a long way to go .

In all the years, I have only seen two broken belts ever - and both were a result of a rock impeded in the rear pulley.

I've had two on an 01 Ultra sometime after rear tire dealerr changes, I've since changed dealers and not had to replace another.

They should last 100,000 if you can keep ham bones off of them.

At slightly over 500 miles from new, i had one snap in two as i did a throttle gose in front of my neighbor. This was coming home from a 100 mile ride. The Dealer fixed on warranty and told me that a bolt from my rear header pipe was missing and blamed it on that, say the bolt got hung up in the belt. Lucky for me, they installed the pipes so they ate it.

When i first got my custom bike i broke it twice.I have a 110 revtech engine at the time i had 5 speed tranny on it.Once i broke it shifting from 1st to second and once from 3rd to second. After we replaced with 6 speed tranny it never happened again.Too much torque on that engine. In your case i dont know how many miles u got on the bike but as far as i am concerned it should be good for at least 40.000 miles. :drink:

Cool Al, nice to hear the RevTech 110 is a real stump puller. Running that with a 6-speed and rear chain drive on my 4-speed frame. Should be fun! :2vrolijk_21:

The only broken belt I have seen was from a guy on an Ultra who weighed about 350# and his wife was close to the same size if not bigger and they had over 75,000 miles on it and the bike was 8 years old when it broke.

I just got to see one break. Had a friend of mine on a 2000 Road King with a 95 inch motor he built. Was sitting in a bar talking smack about how fast it was. Him and all of his misinformed HIGH PERFORMANCE  buddies decided to change bars. As we left the bar (6 of us) the one in the lead decided to open the throttle. Well he took off on a 2004 Road King with a stage two 95 inch motor. Well me and Ole Punkin laid back for about 100 feet and let the show begin. When I decided to run them down I went by the the 2000 Road King just as he was shifting into 3rd. I heard the bike hit the rev limiter. I ran down the 2004 Road King in a short time. We made a turn about a mile up the road and stopped to wait for everyone. Well we ended up going back to find the bike sitting on the side of the road. Yep a broken belt. It flew out of the bike and about beat the guy behind him to death.

I looked at the belt and you could see where a rock had caused it to break. The rock went through the pulley dead center. This is only the third belt I have ever seen break in over 20 years. I actually know of one that has over 150 k on it. So I would say riding style and luck play a big part in your belt life. If you are not abusive you should be able to get 100 k out of your belt.
