What else to change?
« on: November 11, 2008, 08:05:15 AM »

I have a thread posted about the special tools needed to do the cams and tensioners on a 06 SG TC88.
I also would like to hear from you all if there is anything else I should change or replace with a better component than stock while I have it tore down, such as: a better oil pump etc.

I did the Feuling oil pump and lifters with the gear cams. Also got the bypass spring from Zippers that goes in the cam support plate.  Some have installed the feuling cam plate but I didn't.

Yes, on my 103 I got 575 cams from Zippers and the geardrive from S&S..  S&S also makes a nice install kit where you get all the necessary gaskets and orings.

Is there any issues with going back in with standard cams(not stock) and the stock chains?
I am having difficulty with picking a cam for the bikes. They are 06 SG's, and we tour and we/I want some more torque and some horses on the side. Any suggestions for a cam?
If it were a car engine I would have no problem, it would be a comp cam, and I would build the motor with the assistance of Desktop Dyno s/w. I am not knowledgeable enough with these HD motors so your suggestions will be helpful. I don't mind changing gears, cam plates as long as it's for a purpose and not because everyone else is doing it. I hope that makes sense.

www.sscycle.com/iframes/catalog50.php

You can read about S&S bolt in chain grive cams here (scroll down and click on valve train and then the 1st camshaft you see).  You can also buy a gear drive cam from them which would eliminate the tensioners.   Depending on how you ride will depend on the cam grind.  I wanted a cam that performed between 2,000-3500 rpm's where I ride.  If you shift each gear at 5,000 rpms, you will need something else.  You do not need the cam support plate.  I would change the lifters and oil pump.  You can get 15-20% off S&S parts from Mark at www.mandmcycles.com  .
Hope this helps.

Thank You! I'll read up, and no I don't shift every gear at 5000, most of the time around 2800-3200 and when I get a wild hair 4000-5800,6000.... not often though.

You may want to look at the SE billet cam plate and oil pump used on the newer motors 07 and up. The oil pump has better savaging and if you ever go back to chain drive, it has the better tensoner and chain design. Below is a link that describes it, may or may not be the best price.

What year bike are we discussing ?  You don't need the Fueling oil pump or lifters if the H-D in question is an 07 or newer.
