Must Have Changes to the SE Ultra

LOL - with my 40th B-day [smiley=nixweiss.gif] around the corner I was wondering what changes you have made to your bikes, chrome, what parts did you change out, wife always asks what to get me and I never know what to tell her, lol so I got my pen and paper here, lets here what you have done......

This was a popular thread in the SEEG section for a long time.  Over there it was called "Must have changes" or something like that.  Just in case it takes off the same way here I'll put a "sticky" on this thread so it'll stay up on top and rename the thread title so it matches the one in the other section.  

Little things like floorboard extenders for comfort and bigger things like shocks were found there by many guys.  It was a great thread for guys just getting new bikes and not yet knowing what common improvements or issues might be.  Amazing how many changes we do to bikes that come with everything.....  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]   [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

Depending on her price range, I vote for The Chrome Starter.....it would look Awesome with your Rinehardts,
with no cross over exhaust pipe the starter really shows up well.

If you carry a passenger I would have to say the first must have would be a relo kit for the tourpak, get that thing moved back some and give them a little room.  I used one from the guy below and it works great, went on easier than the Kuryakyn kit and you can't even notice it's on the bike, plus it allows you to adjust it to 2 different positions while mounted.  Ya gotta call him, he has no website but is really great to deal with.

Yup the amps stays right where it is and the price was $80 shipped I believe.  I had to buy 4 bolts because our tourpak isn't as thick as a standard one I guess, but the extra 50 cents didn't kill me.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Has any lowered their bike, I was thinking about it not sure though, things I have done, Hmm, chrome Billet License Plate, Chrome Inner Primary, Stealth Footpegs/highway pegs and billet Extensions, Head bolt Covers, chrome light housing (Trim rings) for all lights, chrome speaker trim rings, ( Motor work ) Rineharts with race tunner,

jeff what does the  SE High Flow do, the stater I was going to cover with chrome caps and when it die's replace it with the chrome one....

Fr8trn- asked the wife about the room she has and she saids that she has enough, also isnt there a way to move the tour pack back an inch from the factory, I thought I saw that somewhere....

There is only enough because you haven't moved it back, once you do then that will be "enough".  [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

Yes there are 2 different positions for mounting, one and inch farther back than the other, had mine delivered with it furthest back, just wasn't enough.  I had the Kuryakyn Relo Kit on my '04 Ultra so my wife was use to the extra room.

Look at the bottom of the tour pak mounting rack.  You'll see the bolts that come down through it now and an alternative set of mounting holes.  One set of holes is farther back than the other set.

Actually twolane, the extra mounting holes are not visible from the bottom on the Screamin' Eagle Ultra as the holes are not in the rack itself... you have to go in thru the tour pak and pull out the liner, then you'll see the extra holes in the tour pak itself.  The extra inch doesn't seem like much, but it makes a big difference.

hmmmm, I just looked at my tour pak and I am up close
Might just have to move the tour pak back the 1" and give her a little more room
Riding 2 up is not my idea day but some days you got to do it to keep Peace ;D

Interesting.  Thanks Rebel.  So your mounting is entirely different somehow.  On the prior years from the bottom you could see this.  The holes through the pak were the same.  Wonder if the difference is just in your 06 fixed mounts with the leather pak or if something changed on all the 06 bikes?

Jeff, on your rather long list ( I'm jealous ) of HD parts, you listed your Air Cleaner as 29773-02B, which is the Street legal version. Just curious, considering you have a non street legal setup, why did you not go with the SE Pro unit 29440-99C ?  I'm in the process of gathering part numbers for mine and had planned on using the latter.  Just want to be sure which one will work and why you chose the one you did.

Robert, to answer your question on part numbers I can't as I assumed/thought I got the correct part #.
Anyone know if the other Air Cleaner Part # will make scooter perform any different?
I am going to have to stop by the local HD Dealer tomorrow and inquire.

LOL -  Yeah I have maybe went a little over board on shinny parts and such but this is my passion and hobby.

Robert, what changes are you going to make with your new scooter?
Bet your excited and can't wait for the day the HD Truck delivers your new scooter

I think jeff ordered that new color that HD is not telling us about, the Chrome & Autumn Haze FLHTCUSE ;D Jeff has helped me with picking out some shinny new parts for my bike, cant wait to get them all on. I hope I can still lift it off the kick stand  ;D ;D

I think Jeff owns ALOT of HD stock,, because he told me a long time ago,, what all he had added to his bike.  My HD Dealer,, has a whole bin, full of parts, with my name on them, for my bike, IF it ever gets in,,but  NOT as many as Jeff.  I am new to these SE's,,  so I figured there wasnt alot you could add to the bike.  BOY,,,,,,,,,  was I wrong!!   I do appreciate everything Jeff has helped me with,,   but that may change,,  once I see what the final tally will be when I take the bike out of the shop,, for the first time!!   Thanx again Jeff !!!

Hey Jeff, thanks for the info. Let us know what the dealer tells you. It is my understanding that the AC you used would be for someone doing a stage I, 49 state, street legal set up out of the regular catalog.  Since you went with the freedom package you could have gone with the Pro AC, which is just the old tried and true unit, but it is now referred to differently and is in the SE Race catalog. That is the one I intend (ed) to use, if and when my bike ever gets here.  Put my deposit down in Aug.
  As for other mods, my plan is to go with the 6 speed gearset w/3.37 gearing, a SERT, the above mentioned AC, and I'm still deciding on exhaust. Really having trouble with this aspect of it though as I don't want loud, and I don't really know if I can deal with the look of a 2 in 1, so I'm still pondering. Maybe a good set of pipes will fall out of the sky for me. LOL

I had a chance to stop by the HD dealer this morning and asked about the difference of:
29773-02B vs. 29440-99C and he said the only difference that he knew was the ECM Calibration
When we compared both Parts by Picture they show the same configuration of parts
That's my story and I am sticking to it until someone else comes up with something different
I know my scooter runs really good with the setup I have and I Like It

You guys don't be telling your wife/gf about my Chrome Addiction  as she might think I had
something to do with you buying all those Chrome Shinny parts.....LOL

Interesting Jeff.  When I looked up the part numbers last nite, I also compared the two pictures and they do look identical.  Maybe just more HD bullsh!t to confuse us poor bikers.  Good luck with the new cams.   [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Back when I purchased my SE air cleaner, I asked the same question of 3 different parts managers at various dealerships.  They all indicated that as best they could tell they were the exact same parts.  One actually had both part numbers in stock and offered to pull them out for us to compare.  Visually, they are identical except one had a "For Racing Use Only" sticker on it and the other didn't.  Since they are both priced the same, I can't figure what would cause H-D to carry them under different part numbers.  BTW - I suggest that you check to see if they have stopped using the paper element and gone back to the real K&N oiled filter.  If not, I would suggest going to the Ness Big Sucker with the genuine K&N element.

Over the weekend I experienced the 1st frost in Central Valley of CA
I will tell you the Heated Hand Grips are Great and Seat Warmer was Nice too
Can anyone design and build a Floorboard Boot/Shoe Warmer?
If my hands and feet stay warm I think I could ride almost anytime
OK maybe not in snow or ice but in Central CA it doesn't snow but once every 50 years
But hey we have really Heavy FOG and I mean Heavy FOG

Jeff, Just curious.  You said you added the "Legend Air Ride - 2404-1001".  Is that because the ride of the stock bike wasn't smooth enough?  Does the Legend Air Ride make much difference?

Nope on the ride the CUSE is pretty smooth with stock air shocks

LOL...It's cause I got short stubby legs and it was tough to throw my leg over the saddle...don't tell know body that...please
All I do is slam the bike as low as it goes then throw my leg over and bring additional air into the Legends.

I like the air ride as I don't ride double up much but when I do all I need to do is put a little more air in system...yeah you could call me lazy

One thing that I have noticed since I went with air ride is on a bumpy road I can trim the ride out simular to when you trim the motor on a motor boat.

In the next week or so I am going to do a review of the Legend Air Ride System

Jeff, you didn't have anything on your list about the radio antenna's. Are you leaving the stock "whippers" on or have you swapped for a neat set of stubbies or under-the-fairing digital. I took my whip antenna's off and installed the 18 inch black rubber aftermarkets. Reception is great on the AM/FM/XM. CB probably wouldn't do too well but I'll never use it anyway.

I'm already on my way I think. I've dropped over $500 on shinny stuff for a bike I don't even have yet.

I have two questions.
First, I didn't notice until I got home after buying a few items, but the dealer charged me $5 for special handling to order a part they didn't have in stock. I guess the fee is to order the item and then call me when it comes in. Do your dealers do that? Not that it's a great amount of money but I just thought it was messed up.

Second question, if I buy chrome Brembos for the front and a black Brembo for the back, do I still have OCD?

Answers to your questions and these are just my opinions.

1. If it's a H-D part it will be shipped along with all the other parts that H-D dealers receive several times a week. So I would think that is inappropriate to charge you a special handling fee. Also is this the same dealer you bought bike from or already spent $500 on chrome for a bike you haven't took delivery on yet? Lastly my dealer has never charged me for anything extra for something they had to order because they didn't have it in stock, they were just happy to have my coins instead of me going to another dealer and purchasing the part.

2. Since you already spent $500 on chrome for a bike you haven't taken possession of yet it doesn't matter if you bought one piece that isn't chrome you already have a full-blown case of OCD. Besides the piece you bought that isn’t chrome can’t be seen unless the saddlebags are off. Just admit it, don't feel guilty, and buy as much as you can. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I placed my order for a few "extras" with Zanotti's only to find out they had to order everything.  I called them and they promptly canceled the order and refunded the charge. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
Tracked down Jenni (formerly of Hale's) and called her at Benjy's HD.  Great service and the usual 20% off (and no sales tax for us out of state'rs).  You can't get the same discount with an on line purchase, you have to call it in.  Just be ready with your part numbers and she will tell you on the spot if it is in stock.  In the past (for my Heritage) she would ship what she had and send the balance of the order without additional shipping charge. [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]
I still purchase some items from my local dealer but if over $250 it's with the discounters. :-[

I went with the Freedom Antennas - they seem to work great - like you CB is not a high priority for me but I did have a friend try my CB with new Freedom Antennas and he ordered a set for his UC and he uses the CB a lot, so the CB antenna must work OK

I don't see the numbers you reference, but there is only 1 SE Air Kit, I have it on mine and the stock cover fits fine.  They are probably confused because they see 2 screws on the outside of the cover and know that the SE only accepts one big bolt.  They just ain't smart enough to figure out that when you pull the two small screws out and remove the plate, there is a big bolt behind it....idiots....

I swear sometimes we should charge back on the dealers just for thier stupidity.....

Say what?  Don't you love it when the parts guy doesn't know the answer so he just makes one up?  The same backing plate fits the carb and the Delphi TB.  The only one that was different was for the dual throat TB's on the Magnetti-Marrelli EFI, and it has a separate part number (29441-99A).

I have just come from my local HD Dealer and was inquiring about what exhaust I should put on my new FLHTCUSE and they informed me that I would not be able to put the Rinehart True Duals on my bike because they were made for carburated engines and mine is EFI.  They suggested slip-on's.  Is this correct?  They also said I would not need an SE High Flow because my bike comes with it.  Is this correct?  They suggested I wait until my bike comes in (2 weeks) and listen to the exhaust because the Screamin Eagle package is a great package and I shouldn't make any changes to it.  What do you think?  I am feeling very nervous about my Dealer because they have not yet seen one of these bikes.

Canuck, sounds like you've got one of those dealers who when they don't know the answer to a question, they just make something up.
It really sounds like he just wants to sell you all HD stuff. Some dealers are very anti-aftermarket.  If he ( your dealer ) thinks the Rineharts are for carb bikes, print up a few copies from the dyno thread and show him all the 100hp, 100tq bikes that are FI w/rineharts.

I have just come from my local HD Dealer and was inquiring about what exhaust I should put on my new FLHTCUSE and [highlight]they informed me that I would not be able to put the Rinehart True Duals on my bike because they were made for carburated engines and mine is EFI[/highlight].  They suggested slip-on's.  Is this correct?  [highlight]They also said I would not need an SE High Flow because my bike comes with it[/highlight].  Is this correct?  They suggested I wait until my bike comes in (2 weeks) and listen to the exhaust because the Screamin Eagle package is a great package and I shouldn't make any changes to it.  What do you think?  I am feeling very nervous about my Dealer because they have not yet seen one of these bikes.

So far your dealer is 0 for 2.  #1 - there is no such thing as an exhaust made specifically for either a carb or an EFI bike.   #2 - the air cleaner on the SE Electraglides is the stock plastic air-box, with a few extra holes to let a little more air in, and with the stock TC88 paper filter element.  Very restrictive, and in my experience it also produces an irritating droning noise when accelerating.

Everyone has their own opinion on modifications, here's mine:  Ride the bike for at least a few weeks totally stock so you can get acclimated to the bike and form a baseline opinion of the power, driveability, and sound.  Then, if you feel the need, do the air cleaner, pipes, and download.  Many folks will be totally satisfied with just those changes.  If you find that you still crave more power, then refer back to this site for suggestions on dyno tuning, cams, head work, etc.  I personally try not to do anything internally while the bike is in warranty; so far the 103 with low restriction mufflers and air filter produces enough power to make me happy.  The only change I'm contemplating right now is a better sounding muffler than the Screamin' Eagle mufflers I'm currently using.

It has to do with injection changing from magnetti marelli to Delphi. I can give you the long story if you call me. I'm sorry the other dealer couldn't explain it to you or know that they are exactly the same.  I've been doing this for 10 years."

Kerry,

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger on that.  It seems like every time I'm in a dealership I overhear some sales person or service person telling a customer something that I know is 100% wrong.  There are many excellent people in this business, but unfortunately all it takes is a few of the other kind to make you distrust dealerships in general.  The best advice I can give anyone is to buy the manuals for your bike and study them.  At least then you will probably know more about the bike than many of the dealership people, especially with a low volume bike like a CVO.

Congratulations on the new ride - I'm sure you'll love it.

I was just told by the parts guy that you can only cut the anteenas , most guys do it, that the shorter aftermarkets are no good, and the under the fairing kit does not work for the CB,....anyone have the links to order the freedom anteenas ??? O ris there a better option I should be looking at??,

Check out the black rubber shortie antenaes at NAPA. They're $5.95 and look exactly like the Freedom AM/FM that they get $18 bucks for. I guess they don't have the Freedom name on the label though so they're not "exactly." And $88.95 plus shipping for the pair. What's that about? Better visit Radio Shack and get the real deal. You need all your change for chrome.

By the way, the threaded antenea base on an H-D is the same size as the standard GM or Ford antenea base so no "billet adapter" is required.

I have the Freedom shorty's too, but am having a problem with the edge of the tour pak lid hitting the radio antenea and starting to put a small tear in it. theres an edge on the antenae shaft that Im going to smooth out, as it is quite sharp. My lid seems to have a lot more play in it than Id like. So am being careful when I close it.

I have a 05 SE-Fayboy which takes up all funds for performance mods and am now seriously thinking about a blower for it (only 5k or so). This will most likely have to wait until 07.

Yep, I bit the bullet on these too.  I've had them installed on both bikes and I'm sure I'll do it on the SEUC too.  As I've said before, I have no mechanical ability whatsoever so after looking at the instructions that came with them I said "no way - no how".  Had the dealer do both sets, 2 hours labor for each bike...

I put those little b*stards on myself.  I took out too many little inside screws on the right hand switches and it took me 2 1/2 hours to complete.  Learned my lesson on the left hand side switches and did those in only 30 minutes.

Maybe the moon and stars were all correctly alined for me when I put the chrome caps on, except for a little scratch on the right turn signal cap, it was not too bad a job. (?)  I would not be in a hurry to do it again though.   :)

Thanks for the warning. I had hard enough time the last couple of nights installing Lifter Block Cover - P/N 18248-99

After removing Air cleaner cover, air filter, right side lowers, modifying a hex key (because front Rinehart was in the way), and a lot of swearing I finally got it installed. Remember I never said I was mechanically inclined, but pure determination and I had the job half done and had to finish, I made it happen. I'm sure for those that have done this numerous times there are short cuts and easier ways to complete this, but had I known it would take me as long as it did I would have paid to have it installed. I especially like the clean look of this part, but man trying to thread a bolt from the jiffy stand side to hold in the center piece was a bear. >:(

BTW, some of you that I have phone numbers (Don, Harry) almost got a call for [smiley=help.gif].

Well crap, now I feel bad.  I've got those on the red bike but will be taking them off soon.  Did a major bargain eBay score a month or so ago and got the fancy billet rocker boxes, lifter blocks and pushrod tubes all in one auction.  Going to put them all on when the cam swap happens.  

Would've just given you the covers that'll come off.  I'll have no use for 'em and I hate having stuff like that setting around where I have to be careful of it forever.

FWIW, those covers are a whole LOT easier to put on with the right side pipe out of the way.

I forgot to add that I dropped the hex key while working on removing the front screws and it fell into the chrome oil cooler cover. Had to jack the bike up, remove the cover to retrieve the hex key. Not only did I do this once I did it a second time before realizing that all I had to do was put a rag on top of the oil filter to prevent hex key from falling into oil cooler cover. ::)

As soon as my wife and I sat on our 2006 SE Ultra we knew we needed to move the Tour Pak back. When I read about George Anderson and his relocation kit verses the expensive one from Kuryakyn I called him. Let me tell you how impressed I was dealing with this guy! The product is great; he delivered it quick; and it was about $50 less than the Kuryakyn model, and it took less than 1 1/2 hours to install. The insructions were easy to read and all the parts were color coded. I didn't have to buy any bolts or move the amp.

Stripped them off and installed the all chrome saddlebag support kit, #46565-04 in their place. Big improvement!

One of those "different strokes" things here.  I specifically added rear crash guards to the red bike almost immediately after getting it.  Had nothing to do with looks (though I really don't mind them either).  They are just a whole lot cheaper than a saddlebag when the time comes that the bike leans over farther than normal someday.  But more than that, if you've ever watched as you slide out from underneath one and see the bike hit the crash guards and keep going rather than bouncing off your leg before moving on you'll never be without the rear guards ever again.

Nope...actually the kit part number out of the catalog is 75320-05 for the spun aluminum faced gauge.  The part number you list is for a black faced one.  I assume you'd want them to look the same...but you know about "assuming".

I am looking for any input / experience with the Tour Pack reloaction solution that George Anderson has come up with.  I heard that it has a lever that lets you adjust on the fly.  Can anyone verify this one way or the other?

To me that is about the finest $30 investment that could be made on any Harley.  Also gives you an excuse to  :drink: whaile you try to put the da_ _ things on!  :dizzy2:

I brought them up in another thread last year and everyone talked me out of them.  Then when I was at the shop with the paint rebuild I asked how much to put them on.  One Hour, deal I figured.  Crap $60.00 and no swearing, broken anything etc.  I sure like them since I didn't have to do them :bananarock:

I've used this kit on my 07 seuc and ridden with it for several thousand miles with no problems at all.  Wife loves the extra room.

I helped a buddy put these things on his 03 RK, and swore that if I ever did it to my bike.........or helped anyone do it again, there would be condtions.  1.  PLENTY of beer.  2.  Nothing else I should be doing, so I can devote as much time as needed to the task, without worrying about anything else.  This task requires lots of time and even more patience.  I possess neither.

On a personal note, I think these switch covers look awesome.  Of course, I've yet to find any chrome that doesn't look great.  The only problem I can see is what appears to me to be a lack of acceptable contrast between the switch identification script and the surrounding chrome.  Of course, we all know these switches by feel alone...............but with my frequent brain farts due to information overload and tunnel vision, I'd need to be occasionally reminded of what switch performs what function.  Again, simply my preference only.

I've got the caps on all my bikes and I can positively say, I didn't do any of them.  I bought the first set and brought them home, opened the package and read the directions... I immediately came in the house, called the dealer and asked when I could get an appointment to have them installed.  The best news is all the bikes still run without a problem since the dealer did it, otherwise, they'd all be sitting in the garage with parts laying all around them!  :2vrolijk_21: :huepfenjump3:

After seeing the Bike last Monday, this is the stuff that I had to have the Dealer install (not counting header pipes, breather and SERT):
Chrome Switch Caps
Radio and Gauge Faceplate Trim
Seat Handles

I need the seat handles to push and pull the Trike around.  My budget ran out just around the rear bumper on the Trike kit, so reverse gear would be nice, but can't afford.

After I win the lottery, the next stuff to add would be:
Air Horn
Oil Temp Gauge
Chrome Inner Primary

As a testimony to the success of the 12 step chromeaholics program, note the largest piece of chrome is listed last!

Well, my better half created a must have that I had to put on the SEUC.  She missed the grab handles that came stock on my 02 Ultra, that I had to put them on the SEUC.  But me, with OCD, I couldn't just settle for adding the chrome grab rails, I also had to add the chrome grab rail covers, with rubber inserts.  Really dress those bad boys up.

I had to have them for the Trike conversion.  I am to cheap to put reverse gear on the build, so I use the handles to move the Trike around.  And of course, you have to have the rubber inserts in case it is a rainy or snowy day.  More traction you know.

I don't have a picture of them on my scoot, and I'm out of town right now.  Here's the pics of them from the HD website and the part numbers and costs.  They don't interfere with the saddlebag lids at all.  These, without the covers, used to be stock on pre-95 EG Classics and Ultras.  The MoCo replaced them with that absolutely useless grab strap.

You're probably right.  They will rub against the speaker grills in that position.  I don't know of anyone that knowingly has their tour pak in the forward (shipping) position, so hopefully that shouldn't present a problem.

I was leary about the warning too, but after talking with the dealer, they assured me that they would, in fact, work with the Ultra's rear speaker pods.  They couldn't understand why the MoCo put that warning in the description.   My wife lamented the fact that they were missing on the 07 when we did the run up to York in April, so when I said that they were available as an accessory, that's all she needed to hear.  We got a chance to see an Orange/Black SEUC with them on and she said put them on mine.  I went one step further and put the covers on as that was more befitting, IMO, of a CVO.  ;)  I believe everything is the same between 06 and 07 as far as seat and backrests right?  There should be no problem with putting them on the 06.  And if you have the tour pak relocation bracket installed, it's not even a potential issue, you'll have plenty of clearance.

Home now with the pictures. Tour pack in the rear stock position. Grab rail will not fit with pack in forward shipping position as there is only about 3/8" clearance when it is in the rear mount position.

left side. I zip tied the rear intercom receptacle to the rail and eliminated that ridiculous spring gadget. Not too terrible looking, and no accidental contact with saddlebag lid.

Just a thought on my end now that I see the pic (thanks for the pic), I had my seat re-done and it may be wider than would work with those handles now too.

Unless you've really gone wide, the seat should still work with the handle.  I had a Road Zepplin seat on my 01 with the handle.  IIRC, the RZ seat was 9" wider in the rear.
