That Oil Drain hose on the FXR is not nice
« on: October 26, 2009, 07:58:47 PM »

Anyone made any mods or tools to make it easier toi drain the oil tank?  Unless you bend it down and out from under the side support brace, you don't get all the oil.  It would be nice to convert it to the softail style and mount a plug on the frame.
Even pumping it out of the tank would be neater.

By the way, I changed the tranny fluid for the first time that I've owned it.  The fluid that came out was almost white and smelly.  Any ideas what it was?

I replaced it with redline, so it must look a candy cane inside.  :)

Hmmm, I haven't found draining the oil tank difficult with the FXR.  Heck, everytime I do it, I wish the FLs were that easy and clean. :nixweiss:

Gear oil is almost always "smelly," but a white-ness to the tranny fluid could indicate moisture.  Had the bike been ridden far enough recently to get everything up to operating temp?

It was warmed up.  I know the look of the moisture in the oil.  Well it's gone now.

As far as the drain hose, it doesn't allow you to get some of the oil out because the hose creates a plumber's trap, unless you force the hose down behing the frame support which dump oil on the belt and lower belt guard and frame.

yeah, that design must be a total after thought ,,,,,,, the designer FORGOT that he was gonna need a way to drain it .... some guy in the shop said, ahh heck, let's just slap a house right here, that's fine !

I might have a look at mine next spring/summer and see if I make a mod for it ....

A petcock just below the tank would work.  Then when you move the hose around, the oil won't be dumping all over the place, as long as you remember to shut of the petcock before refilling.
Or below the petcock you could remove the hose and add it when needed.

Thanks for posting that up ..... I just might do that ..... need a way to hide it ... maybe like you said, just a petcock, and add the hose when you want to drain it .... hummmmmmm  good thoughts here now
