in fairing antenna
« on: December 21, 2009, 10:28:13 PM »

Hey y'all, I broke the antenna on the AM/FM side of the tour pak, so I was thinking to see which in- fairing antenna my work best for AM/FM and CB

Got mine from e-glide goodies when I did the detachable hardware for the tourpak. I did put connectors in the cables but wanted radio/weather when running solo so I put in the internal fairing antennae which woks great 90% of the time.
Works for me.

I second that, I've never had any issue with the inner fairing antenna. Pretty cheap too..................Fuzz

I have not had good luck with this product. Do you have any pics on the install. I am wondering if my location is off.  I have no weather band and can only seem to get in four channels and loose them when I am riding.

While doing the detach-the-tourpak procedure, I found this AM/FM/WB fairing antennae on EBay for cheap:

Then ordered the J&M CB fairing mounted antenna.  So far, happy with both.

I was not happy with the TuneTrapper.  I may reinstall it again though since I seem to listen to my iPod most of the time.

RE. tune trapper. I have installed a few of these with mixed results. On my 01 SERG with aftermarket radio it was just short of worthless. On an 00 EG with stock radio it worked nearly as well as the stock whip. On an 06 SG with stock radio it was marginal at best. I spoke with the folks at Tune Trapper and they sent me a replacement antenna that did not work any better.

Moving on. I tried a few off band hidden antennas with no luck. I moved on to a Dakota Digital powered hidden antenna with only slightly better results.

I tried several short antennas and they all were OK. Not of the whip quality but better than the hidden versions. I eventually went to a med. length antenna from a Ford Focus. While not the whip it is the best so far in regards to reception. The looks lack in comparison to the hidden antennas.

Thanks for the feedback on you antenna adventures.

Question; I've got a Dakota Digital hidden antenna that I removed from my Huckleberry a couple years ago before I sold it. It never worked very well compaired to the stock whip antenna but I like the look of no antenna plus getting it out of the way for luggage. Maybe I did not install it correctly and I do not have any directions to refer to now. What is the little black wire for? I had it wadded up and hooked up to a ground. I'm thinking it is supposed to be routed around the inner fairing to pull in the signal :nixweiss: Let me know, I may give it a try again on my SERG3.

Or is this hidden antenna worthless and I should try something else suggested in this thread?

Lots of mixed reactions here. I found something that looks like an old style cell phone antenna and replaced the old 10 ft long whip. Works fine and reception is really pretty good. It's pretty short, maybe 15" or so.
