cop bike harness question
« on: March 18, 2010, 01:20:21 AM »

Was asked this and don't know.  Never had a police bike harness in hand.

Question is how much is different on a Road King cop bike main harness?

Real answer looked for is can they be easily civilianized?

I'm assuming the extra connections for hazard lights, sirens, radio, etc trunk off the main harness somewhere.  Also not sure what extra switches there are on these bikes and where and if this changes the connectors in the nacelle that mate to the handlebar controls.

It was a question I'd not had to deal with before and it made me curious.  So checking further.  If anyone has ever dealt with civilianizing a cop bike would appreciate your insights.

Oh, and as part II of this question:

From back when we did the billet tour pak hinge group buys we were contacted by a bunch of guys with police bikes who had what seemed to be a very informative site on that subject at www.flhpi.com .  That site now is apparently dead.  Anyone know if it's moved to a new URL or anything else about it?  From my experience there before several of its members would've known the answers to this and several hundred alternatives.  No site though....

I converted a 2000 Road King, i didn't add a tour pack but removing the police seat and hardware and the police lights were a piece of cake. All it took was a jumper wire in place of the flasher and some clear lenses to convert the front red and blue to driving lights. I also replaced the hockey puck saddle bag locks with push buttons that i got from eglidegoodies along with billet inserts where the standard latch goes. The dealer would not sell me the bike until they replaced the tires, i don't recall why now.

The police bikes come w/run flat tires is probably the reason they changed them.

Could be, i vaguely recall them saying something about them not being rated for 2 up. At the time i didn't care cuz i got the wide whitewalls i wanted for free.

Thanks Dave.  Police seat and other hardware apparently isn't part of this particular equation.  Guy I know has a bike with a fried harness and was given an FLHPI harness.  I just had no clue how much extra hung on the police bike harness and if all the civilian stock usage points were still in place.

Thanks Billy.  That's what was hoped for.  Just a little extra that didn't hurt anything.  The guy who owns the bike believes that electricity specifically and wiring generally are parts of a magical mystery tour whose purpose are to enhance mayhem and mischief.  Which means he won't touch it :huepfenlol2: .

So I'm trying to find out all we can before wasting a Saturday afternoon.
