Circuit breaker recall
« on: April 22, 2004, 11:21:54 PM »

Well, I guess I should go buy a lottery ticket. The day dealerships start receiving the letter regarding a recall of the main circuit breaker mine starts stranding me in a construction zone with a 20" breakdown lane. Just like clockwork.

Limped it to a dealership who showed me the recall letter he received today that states the replacement breakers won't even be shipped out until 4/26/04. How crazy is that?

This recall is regarding a "quit while riding" total failure of the ignition. I still have lights, etc. but the bike just quits. Then within minutes the speedo fails. The 15 amp fuse for the instrument panel is fine but no speedo or odometer. They ran a diagnostic on the ecm and it said the battery was surging the ecm with high voltage spikes.

Apparently they are switching out the 40 amp main breaker for a 50 amp. Same size and shape so it pops right into the same holder under the seat. (If they had one!!!!!!!!!!!)

If you have had a similar experience with this problem please post here. Theres not much good it will do but at least we can comiserate and I'll know I'm not crazy.

This recall affects mostly touring models from 2001 to 2003.

Cheers

Do you have the recall number, mine is going in 5/4 for service work.

Believe me...they will know about it. They originally tried to fix the problem with a 40 amp MaxiFuse.

It did not work. Make sure they put in the 50 amp breaker. Harley will begin to ship the kits 4/26.

When mine did that the dealer never even mentioned a recall, but took my $50 for the deductable on the extended warranty.

Rat bastards. That was 4 months ago, think I can get my money back?

Mine quit on me just as I pulled into a parking place.  Supposedly it wasn't one of the ones recalled.  So I went to the local auto parts store and bought a 50 amp breaker from them and replaced it myself for about $8.  Easier than going to the dealer in the first place.

Before it kills you is right!

You just can't imagine the situation I was in when mine started quitting for the first time. A very crazy narrow breakdwon lane in a construction area with Jersey concrete barriers on each side.  I only lived through it when a fellow rider in a cage stopped and protected me until I could get off the road.

Getting a 50 amp breaker from an auto parts store will definitely do in a pinch. They are a standard size and will get you through.  You may have to modify the terminals on it to make it work though.

I highly suggest going to the dealer to get the proper recall done and the history of the recall on your vin number.

It is unconscionable that the MoCo is not doing everything they can to notify each and every one of the owners of affected and possibly affected bikes.

And for you who had to pay a warranty deductible to get this fixed from your dealer go back and A) kick him in the balls and B) find another dealer.

(Just one mans opinion)

Goldiron:  I just read your post, and I'll look up the brand and part number tomorrow morning.  The one I bought looks exactly like the stock one, except it's a 50A.  I also drilled a small hole in the plastic circuit breaker holder so water would drain out of it as my stock breaker looked like it had been sitting in water-as it faces up with no place for the water to escape.

GridIron:
I checked and can't find the receipt for the breaker and can't get it out far enough to read the numbers on it without taking out the battery.  If you take yours into a GOOD auto parts store they can match it up in physical size and then just get the one that's 50A.  I had to order mine but it was there in a day.  If you still can't find one, let me know and I'll stop at my parts store and get the numbers for you.

Here is a link to the Service Bulletin for the Circuit Breaker.  I see that they have added a Revision "A" to this S/B and included more models. Maybe you can print this out and firmly place it up the Service Managers bum!!!! [smiley=laugh.gif]

GoldIron:
Sorry I misspelled your name!  I found the part number for the 50A circuit breaker.  It's made by Standard Ignition and the # is BR24.  My cost was $7.94 at the auto parts store.

So far the dealer tells me the 04's are not involved in the recall,  not sure why. will take the battery out tonight and see if is a 40amp or 50 amp.  If its a 40 I will upgrade to a 50
