Metzeler ME880 Marathon
« on: August 21, 2010, 09:56:06 PM »

Just changed Back Tire on my 2010 Convertible. Went with the Metzeler. Had 6100 on the D407 and it probably had 1000 left in it but I was looking towards vacation time in about 3 weeks. The one difference I've noticed is the 880 doesn't have that "Mud-Tire Whine" that the Dunlop had. Just first impression.

watch out for tyre wear, If you do too much freeway it will be bare in the centre line before you know it, vary your roads use and have fun on the back roads to extend your tyre life

That "mud tire whine" was likely a cupped tire.  Did you good look at the Dunlop after taking it off?

I thought that was how they all were? It did it the first mile I rode it. I thought it was normal due to the fat tire! And I've had a cupped tire on the front of my Fat-Bob, so I've seen one before. No cupped tire, just loud from the rear, especially on a turn. I was impressed that the Metzeler didn't have that same whine!

Good choice of a tire and the AVONs are very good as well!

FYI,

Metzeler has their own recommended tire pressures.  I most cases its higher than the MoCo recommends.  Check their web site.

Came back yesterday from a 2300km trip thru France and the Alps. IMO, the Metzeler is far more responsive to the surface
of the road than the D408 is. But it was never a problem of handling the bike, you/I just feel more differences in the surface
than before. Still had the D407 at the front, but now will change to the Metzeler as well.

You will like the Metzler's even more when you put the front one on. the handling and ride is entirley different. As far as the mileage i get just as good if not better than the Donflop's.

Been riding riding 40 yrs. Last 15 on Metzeler only. Will run nothing else, even with the cost! You get what you pay for.

What am I doing wrong that my front ME880 is cupping already. Have less than 3500 miles on it after riding from Seattle to Sturgis to Vegas and back to LA to ship bike back to Honolulu. Is it the rim on my 08SERK or is it the fact I used Dyna Beads and told the dealer when he mounted it not to balance the thing because I wanted to use the beads instead? The tire was great at first, but now with the gradual uneven wear coming on, when we were tooling thru MT & WY at a buck twenty, I was getting some serious high-speed wobble and I know the cupping wasn't helping any.  Any and all advise and help is appreciated ...
