Rear Tire choppy?
« on: December 29, 2011, 10:47:38 AM »

haven't ridden much since we got back from our Tennessee trip and just put bike up on jack and noticed the rear tire is choppy (scalloped). Looks almost like a car front tire that is out of alignment. Didn't feel bad when riding (75+ mph). Anyone had this before? Could it be wheel not straight or bad bearings?

I assume those are the stock Dunlap tires.  Both the D407 and D408f have cupping issues.  Some of us have had our tires replaced by HD as a results.  Use the search function and search "cupping."  You will find lots of information.

I have to admit, It's my own fault, but with hard and soft compounds, if you don't keep up with your air pressure. You run the risk of having an uneven (choppy) tire over time.

More often than not this condition is caused by improper tire inflation.  After that, I would look at alignment.  Also, dunlop has had issues with this problem too.

I ran my Metzeler under inflated and that's what my tire looked like.

How many miles on the current tire?  I can see that it is a Dunlop and you are on a 2010 so I would guess that you have had tires replaced before.  Personally I'm ecstatic that I went over 8000 miles on my rear tire this season, it still has plenty of thread just badly cupped.  I usually run out of thread at about 5000 miles or so.  I use the Dyna beads for balancing and check the air pressure very often.  Every front tire I have ever replaced was due to cupping.  I don't see this as being unusual considering how many of us have been through it, maybe we will find a good replacement that wears evenly without the cupping.
