help! new windshield?
« on: May 16, 2012, 12:22:06 AM »

just took my new SERGU for my first ride and absolutely loved it! problem is that when I got over 65 on the freeway my head started to vibrate so bad i had trouble seeing... It certainly isn't the suspension as I put on the Ohlin 6's on the rear and the Harley new double cartrige's on the front and as I said on another thread, the best ride I have ever felt on a Harley (maybe any bike regardless) after riding most of my life. It had to be the wind over the fairing! I am 6.2 with a 31inch inseam. and it felt like I was just getting hammered.
I currently also have a softail with no fairing and never feel anything like this..
Anyone else dealt with this?
Help...

Vibration or wind buffetting?  If vibration,  check your motor mounts.   :huepfenlol2:  Finding the correct windshield for you is the secret to enjoying your Road Glide ownership.  There are lots of opinions.   There are several threads in the '09 SERG board you may want to look at.  I tried several but love my Cee Bailey's.  Also see Clear View, Wind Vest and the ugly Madstead.    Sounds like you're tall in the torso so you'll want a tall shield.  Hope this helps.

Truthfully I'm not sure what it was... It had to be wind buffeting because there was no vibration thru the boards or grips..

Believe it, it's the wind... Stock shield is designed for minimal wind conditions, i. e., the showroom floor :vrolijk_26:

perlinal,

Here's a good shot of the Clearview GT Small with "recurve" on my SERG:  Clearview You'd probably want the Medium or even tall if you went this route.

Here is the Cee Bailey's 14":  Cee Bailey's.  You'd want the 15" or 16"....

Good luck!

Yep, just got back from a 900 mile putt on the weekend, and the stock shield had no use for me, and my wife on the back was ready to jump off. From all the info here, I ordered a Cee Bailey that I am anxiously waiting for. Next, it's down the rode of seat decisions. Good Luck and enjoy the bike!

Not if you order the right windshield.  Cee Glide bolted right up, and came with their improved grommets.

So I got the Cee Bailey 15inch in and it bolted right up, looks great... Went out for a ride and it is still too short! At around 75, my head is still getting hammered. If I duck down about a inch, much smoother. Because it was dark grey they would not exchange. They told me hey would sell me the 16inch for $165 delivered because of the misunderstanding. I went ahead and ordered it but am now having 2nd thoughts. Maybe I should stay with the 15 and just not go 75 or over... Worried about what that extra inch will look like on the bike. Any thoughts?

Do you have pics of the 15" windshield?  If you could post some pics, we could give better advice and opinions.

I bought a super curve windshield from Cee Baileys, and liked the way it looks, but still had a lot of buffeting.  Then tried a 9" Freedom Shield;  didn't like the look as much, but I'm old enough now that I care more about comfort than looks.  If you ride a lot, go for the most comfortable option.  IMHO.

It will look fine.  But, I personally would not put a dark gray tint on a shield that tall (or even on the 15" for that matter) because you won't be able to see chit at night if you need to see what's directly in front of the bike, looking through the windshield.  It may look good being dark, but in this case it's function over form.  Perhaps you can sell the dark tinted 15" to someone who is REALLY tall, or who is willing to cut it down to see over it all the time.

Also, did your bike come with the RG deflectors that attach to the crash bars/gas tank bolt?  I don't know how they'd look on a bike without lowers, but they do function well to redirect the air coming up between the fairing and the gas tank.

I decided to cancel the 16. Maybe this will keep me from going over 75... The setup right now just looks too good to mess with and under 75 it is fine. I went out yesterday and when I am really "hooking it up" even the extra inch wouldnt work past 80 anyway...
I do have that plastic deflector on the front of the tank behind the fairing.

One more question:  Do you wear a full face helmet (or Flip Face), a 3/4 or a 1/2?

I did wear a 3/4 with a flip down visor. Took off the visor and it got much better. Last weekend I bought a new 1/2 and better still. Almost there...
