Saddle Bags and Supports
« on: August 10, 2006, 12:03:12 PM »

I'm looking to add saddlebags to my FXR3.  I don't want to relocate the rear turn signals as it appears I would have to do if I were to believe the MoCo catalogue.

Any help would be appreciated.

Your tail lights have been relocated! OEM tail lights are attached to the chrome rear fender bracket, like the poster above

Deerhead is right.  I pulled out my 1999 sales brochure and looked a the photos.  The original turn signal location was on the rearmost fender bracket bolt area, so mine have been moved to accommodate the saddlebags.

The old saying, "Learn something new everyday" comes to mind.

Interesting (to me) that the wires for the rear turn signals on my bike exit up through small grommetted holes in the rear fender just outboard of the license plate mount--sure looks factory.  Whoever did it did a good job.

Your saddle bag mounts are NOT for a 1999 FXR!!! They are for another model FXR. I have throw over saddle bag mounts for a 1999 FXR and they do not require the relocation of the turn signal lights. I made the same mistake and bought FXR throw over type saddle bag mounts but they required the turn signal relocation. A friend then informed me about the special requirement for the FXR2, 3 & 4s regarding the mount so I researched it and ended up buying the correct mountings that do not require and relocation.
I further talked to Ron Harper, Chase Harper saddle bags, and he custom made my saddle bags with a larger pocket to slip over the mount and extenders for the over the seat vs under the seat mounting.
I also have the real FXR Harley Saddle bags with the metal cam locking mechanism but these require the relocation of the turn signals.

Not to argue, but Harley Davidson says my saddlebags are for a 1999 FXR and I believe them.  I have the chrome saddlebag supports they mention in their description.  You mention a special requirement for the FXR2, 3 & 4s regarding the mount--do you have a part number?  From the HD website:

91010-91A

Fits '82-'03 XL models (except XL1200S and 883R) and '91-'05 Dyna

Me too, not to be argumentative either, but IF you saddle bag mounts fit in the holes previously used for the turn signals then you have the wrong mounts!  It has been a long time ago but I believe I bought the mounts you're talking about and they required me relocating my turn signals and then I subsequently found the correct mounts and didn't have to relocate my turn signals. Regardless, as I said if your mounts use the turn signal holes you have the wrong mounts!
Saddle bag throw over the seat versus under the seat. I had Ron Harper make me Velcro extenders and straps to be able to throw the bags OVER the seat! This required, Velcro extenders straps, pockets on the back of the saddle bags and tie down (to the passenger foot pegs) front straps. Works great and the bags are easy to remove at night and don't flop around at speed.
Check your original turn signal holes, that

I sure would like to know the part number for the correct mounts you mention.

At this point, even if I could get them, I don't know if I would bother moving the signals again, but it would be nice to see the mounts you're talking about just for comparison to what I've got.  If you can find that part number I'd appreciate it.

I can see how over the seat throwovers like the Chase products can be made to not involve moving the signal lights, but it's the support bracket that creates the problem.

Probably will never find the part number but will take a pic when the bike returns from servicing. I had to take off my FXR3 side covers and put the 4 piece older FXR side cover kit on the bike. I think it looks much better with the chrome vs the painted side covers.
Do you have the brake resevior kit with the hole for the site level AND the gold wings? Have you put on the old FXR lower side cover/plate?
I was going to sell my Green FXR3 & K1200RS and keep my Triple red FLTRSEI Road Glide but I had a wreck on it last month and I think it is totaled. Sad to see when 1 of only 750 is gone. I think I'll still sell the FXR3 & RS and buy the new K1200GT.

I'll take pics. When you see them you'll have to have/add both the lower chrome covers. The cover with gold wing is as scarce as hens teeth.

Maybe the owner of the bike in the photo just hung the bags in place for the picture, without any brackets or supports--who knows?  I got the photo off the web.

I'll be interested to see these gold wing side covers you mention.  Were they accessories for production-year FXR's maybe?

I've already ordered the parts to move my turn signals back to the original location.

The covers with gold wings are from the 1994 OEM accessories. I have set the theme of my bike accessories gold wngs and flames.

Back to fxr3Joe's original question, it appears that the HD Latigo bags will work wothout relocating the turn signals.
