IS THIS A NEW? H-D VIN...
« on: August 17, 2006, 05:39:11 PM »

Okay I've done SOME research on the web regarding Harley VIN numbers and such.  I can not find any reference to one that matches my VIN fro an FXR3. The thing I'm curious about is the frame number. Or... my particular frame number as part of what I belive to be 1800 total frames for 1999.  900-FXR2 and 900-FXR3.  So...the break down I see is...

1HD - makes sense
ET - this is where I can't find a match
L - 1340 engine - COOL
4 - production month - ok - March by the way
9 - ?
X - Production year 1999
Y- York - Home of the CVO I get that
Then a sequence number (6 digits) which I'm sure is unique to my bike.  Someone told me the last 4 digits might include the frame number.

OK I APOLOGIZE IN ADVANCE FOR THIS QUESTION  :P

It might be better to anser the question..."If two trains leave New York"......nevermind!

Digin' the site!  I hope to be an active member with more meaningful questions and maybe even an answer or two then this!

I got the HD VIN translations out of a book so here goes:

1HD = All HD models since 1981

1 = 1 digit class code pertaining to engine size.

Y = York, PA. however, following HD's internal meaningless designator, there are 2 letters. In your example, FY, on my FXR4, YY. Any guess as to what the first alpha character refers to?

None.

Thanks Red,

So my VIN starts like this...

1HD1EVL34YY...

Would you read that as a California Special Edition?

I bought mine when I lived in LA and I know it's a Cali special, cuz it was a special effort to get all the Cali-crap off of it.

Maybe that is why there are 2 number spaces. Maybe the one that's considered the "meaningless designator" is to support times when a specific bike meets more than one designator qualification?

Could easily be true.  I can see the MoCo reasoning behind that theory.
