Just Looking for alittle better handle bar .
Thinking about some type of apes ?

I am going to look into putting the pullback risers that are on the standard Breakout on the CVO.   It looks like they should make the stock handlebars 3" taller and 2" closer.  On the standard, does anyone know if the tach is attached to the risers or the clamp?  I've heard both ways, but haven't taken time to find out for sure.  I might need to order the can that the tach sets in from the standard so I'll get the right angle when it's all back together.

If I don't go that route, I'm looking at going with some mini apes.  I think 10" on this bike will be plenty, maybe even less.  I saw a thread that Bassani had for the Breakout that looked like they had the bars from a CVO Convertible on and they looked really good.  I'm not sure what size bars are on a 12 Convertible?

Thoughts and suggestions are always appreciated on this forum.

I would love to go 10' apes, but don't want to spend all the money on the new cables that would need to go with it.

I'm guessing that a +4 brake and clutch would run somewhere around 200.  Bars would be 300 to 350.  Total somewhere around 500.  Then labor, but according to my wife, I'm worthless so that would be zero!

In that thread, I thought the bars looked too tall and too close when comparing the rake angle of the bike.  But that's just me.  12's wouldn't change it much, that's why I thought 10's.

I sat on a Wideglide with CVO Convertible bars the same day as the Breakout with 14" normal apes. From memory the CVO Convertible are about a 12". Felt to low for me so thats why I've gone with a simlar style but in a 16" with the Hiballs from Burleigh Bars.

Counting the days until I get back to pick up my bike... Hopefully the bars will have arrived and been fitted by Monday.

One thing you will have to take into great consideration is the seat height!
As you can see from my photo below, the Convertible has a low seat height that makes the bars higher when your sitting on the Bike!
You will have to try them on a breakout to see what the true height is when they are on the Bike and your in your riding position! also taking into consideration what risers you intend on fitting!
The riding position and height of the bars will differ a lot on most models!

I have the standard Breakout and am installing mini apes now.  The stealer had my bike for a week to order cables for the setup, and they knew I wanted straight risers but didn't even tell me that the CVO has them, which ticks me off.  I just discovered that the CVO has a different set of risers than the standard and am contemplating the switch in a DIY.  I am getting used to seeing the apes on the pullback risers in my pics below, but its still a difficult pill to swallow, i think apes look better with a set of straight risers.  Here is a link to another thread with part numbers, and the BS I had to go through, when all they had to do was tell me "use the CVO risers":http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=84744.0

Cowboy: the speedo/tach/guage combo is attached to the top clamp on a standard.  There is a front skirt on it that would interfere with some styles of risers, check out the thread in my previous post.  Not sure if this front skirts exists on the CVO unit, but if you switched to the risers on the standard you'd still be Ok I think.  I like the standard's risers, they are very beefy...if only they were straight!

is the bar 1.25" all the way thru or does it step down to 1" at the riser clamp?  I was told by the dealer that it's a1.25" w/o a step down.  I have not taken the riser clamp off to verify.

Thanks!

I removed it for now.  I ordered the CVO risers but they are on backorder and keep getting pushed back.  My back was sick of the stock bars, so I just used Fatboy risers to get the bars on for now.

I (virtually) moded sandman's 16" evil apes to 10 inches and I think this is what I will end up with. The bike looks great either way but I am more comfortable with the 10" rise.

Now time for finding out all that's needed to pull this off. One thing I don't think I need to worry about with the 10" bar is relocating the turn signals. What do you guys think?

Cam

That's my question also.  Sandman's relocation kit is my #1 choice now... but the relocation kit to the front  forks looks too much like an add on-and requires a little more rewiring so I am considering the mirrors with turn signals in them but I'm not a fan of their shape.  Also thinking about using just the turn signal stems from the V-Rod muscle, but online HD store says they won't fit the CVO BO.

You don't have to relocate the signals to do apes.  The wire for the signals goes from the hand controls into the signal.  Most just don't like the look of them after apes.
As for the "rewiring" to run them down low, that is super easy.  You just buy a plug end and connectors at the local dealer and plug the new signals in right at the neck on the right side.  There is a plug hiding there just under the gas tank.  You can get to it without removing anything.

One of a kind.  I searched long and hard for the right pedals.  Originally I bought them and used adapters to make them work with the stock peg mount, but those stuck out too far.  So I took them to a local fabrication shop, and had them cut the threads off.  Then they cut the end of the stock peg and welded the two together.

Here is a pic of the pedals with the adapters.

Here is a pic after they were welded together.

Here is a link to the pedals I used.

Here is the adapters if you wanted to go that route.
http://www.bungking.com/universal-footpeg-adapter-for-bmx-pedals.html

Here is a good vendor that sells other styles of pedals that will bolt right on.

On the CVO Breakout, is the handlebar clamp area 1.25" or 1.00"?

1.25"

Can you give the specific model number?  I was looking and couldn't find the !0" apes with 1.25" diameter at the riser clamping area.  I'm trying to find some for my springer without having to replace the stock risers.  Thanks.

I ordered Carlini 14" Evil apes for throttle by wire. They're stepped, but Wild1Inc sells a 1" to 1-1/4" adapter that will fix that problem. Will post pix when finished.

I have to say I didn't think the Breakout with apes looks good. I use to have a Crossbones and loved the look on that bike. Now seeing your setup with those size apes, I do like it. I think the 10's are the way to go. This look is definitely creeping on my to do list. May I ask what the complete setup cost you? Assuming you had to get new cables as well.

Bars were 270, new custom lines were about 100, and shop time.  Definitely no remorse on changing the look either!

I went through Magnum Shielding.  They do not have a kit made for the CVO Breakout, only the Standard Breakout.

The Standard with ABS, actually has the ABS control module located in a different location than the CVO.  They made a brake line for me that worked even though it came different than I ordered.  Since they didn't have a kit, they did not require me to purchase the lower brake line like the kit for the Standard.

If I were to order again, I would send them my stock upper brake line and tell them to make it 6 inches longer (for my bars) than stock.  That way you would get the correct degree of bend on your fittings.

The clutch line was no problem, it must be the same as a lot of other bikes.  I ordered 68 inches and should have ordered 66 inches.

For those putting apes on a CVO and wanting to relocate your turn signals:

I downloaded the service manuals for both. The Standard and the CVO have different wiring for turn signals. The CVO is controlled through the CANBUS and you have to connect at the switch housing and run wires back down through the bars to your desired location. The Standard has the turn signal wires outside the CANBUS and there is a connector under the tank on the front right. Why Harley would go to the additional expense of two wiring systems on the same bike is beyond me.

I'm checking into the idea of adding the wires to the BCM connector, if it works, it would be much easier than running them back down through the bars.  Thanks for the advice 24v!

For those that have run the wires back through the bars, what size wire did you use and how did you connect the wires? Solder or connector or both? Did you put in a multilok connection just in case you decide to change bars?

They are both controlled through the can bus btw.  Just that the standard has the option to wire them to that other plug.

Also, where do you see the different wiring in the manuals?  I have them too, what page are you looking at?

EDIT: Nevermind, found it.  Looks like those 2 wires are missing.  Throw a pin in that spot on the connector and test for voltage when the turn signal is active.  Might just work.

Yep, they are both empty.  I'll have to tap in to the running lights and to ground to take to both.   Looks like it should work on paper.   Does anyone know what size and type of wiring and connectors to use?

For the connector that is normally found under the tank on Softails, that is part # 73106-96BK.  The pins that go in that are part # 73190-96.  For the other half of that connector it is part # 73156-96BK, and the pins for that one are part # 73191-96.  The parts diagram says those pins work for 16-20 AWG wire.  I would grab 16 or 18 AWG, should be fine.

For the pins that you will need to put into the BCM connector, I am not sure which part # they are.  They are either 72222-11 or 72227-11.  Just buy 2 of each, they are like $0.40.

That should cover it.  Total parts cost probably won't be over $20-30.

hdbikeparts.com have everything needed once he gets the correct top of ABS to master cylinder banjo fitting manufactured by Goodridge. Jonny has all the wire extentions and brake and hydro clutch lines. He also carries Wild1's bars of all types cheaper than Wild1's. Tell him I sent ya there.

I put on 14" Wild1's. Love the look but haven't rode due to all the spray down de-icing crap on the roads here.

Ok so I took the above bike off the lift and found that the banjo fitting that I used at the top of ABS unit to the master cylinder is now going to be hitting the neck area when at full right turn. It is 45 type fitting getting it away from the ABS unit but needs to have the bend in it to prevent issue. My wires are also going to be pinched at that point. where can I get the aftermarket part that matches the fitting on the stock line.

Love the look of those bars!
I have an hour commute each way to work.  The stock CVO bars have me riding in a clamshell position and it's getting old, and giving me a sore back.  I want to ride more upright so I believe some 12" apes would provide a better riding position for me.
I contacted HDBIKEPARTS.COM about ordering the parts needed to put apes on my BO and was told
"Can't do the CVO Breakout lines.  The ABS unit is behind the nacelle and the banjo fitting that goes from it to the master cylinder has a long tube on it that no one replicates."

So what is the work-around for the ABS lines? Or do we wait for someone to manufacture the fix?

Jonny ended up sending me a 35 degree that will work you just have to have it turned to the right side of the ABS Unit. I went 14" so he would need to take a few inches of top line.

Jonny will return your call after leaving a message. Don't mention it being for a CVO till he calls you back. He did get frustrated not being able to get the stock fitting made for him. He is a great guy to work with. If I remember right, it is just him that is working there. Just mention that you talked to me, Ziggy and that the 35 degree will work for the banjo @ top of ABS to master cylinder.

Need to correct myself on this. The top 35 banjo fitting will need to be turned to the left of the ABS unit and have the bend facing the front of the neck, opposite what the bottom ABS banjo will be. Clear as mud?

Just ordered my Carlini 12" evil apes & wiring/TBW.  I plan to wait to mock up & measure for my brake & clutch.  I'll post pictures of the progress, any advise is well received!

Hope you dont run into the same problem I had putting on a set of Carlini 14" Menace Apes. Popped alot of fuses wiring his bike up. Good luck. Appeared to not be very clean inside.

Zig, do you mean rough surface on the inside of the Carlini bars?  What length did you order for your clutch & brake?  Measured mine & just ordered them, hopefully correct on my measurements.

Thanks Kevin

Mdeer,  I will need to get back with you on that. I went through a company that I had earlier bragged on, and now need to retract that. He did end up giving me the correct lines and fittings but took a couple of weeks to get it straightened out. He has since got some other orders I have made wrong and causing me some frustrations. I still have my stock stuff so I will get those out and see what the + measurement will be. The upper ABS fitting could not be duplicated with the efforts I made with him but could possibly still be done.

The Carlinis I put on were not for my BO. They were for a friend that picked them out for his 03 Sportster 1200C. Nightmare. Good luck and sorry this is split into 3 posts.

Thanks Zigs,  I went through Magnum Shielding and it seemed to go well.  They are making them now.  Can't find anything for the cvo, they seemed to know this and knew exactly what I was talking about.  I went with 24" on the upper brake line & 68" on the clutch.  She knew the special bango I needed on the brake line for the ABS.  Thanks for the info on the inside of the bars, I'll make sure I look at that.

Thanks again!

If they cant duplicate, which Im sure they can, a 35 degree with the bend toward the front of the bike will work as it will tuck the line in nicely in front of the neck. If they do get the extended length banjo correct can you post that info and pricing. Im sure many others would like to do these same mods.

24" might be pretty long and hard to hide. I was able to keep things tight without causing any concern with turning bars full lft or right. Hope it all works out. Post pics when your done.

Haha yeah, it was a lot of work but I'm happy with them.  Puts my hands in a more comfortable position.  I'm still playing with the mirrors and the upper banjos.  I'll get it where I want it soon.  I went with 12", I'm 6'2" and this fits me perfectly.  Good luck on your decision and let me know if you need help.

I ended up wrapping each harness with electrical tape and put a thin layer of lithium grease over the entire harness.  The left side was very easy but the right side was a bitch with the throttle by wire, you have two on that side.  I used some heavy gage speaker wire to pull them through, didn't have any of the speaker wire shredded so I was confident my harnesses were fine.  Everything works great!

I worked on my brothers 03 1200C Sportster for hours. alot more wires it seemed. I cussed them bars like they stole my sandwich. Might have just been a bad day or there was no QC done on them for burrs and welding slag. Or MAYBE it was someone elses dream and when they woke I wasnt even there. hmmmmm.

Yeah I cussed and walked away a couple times on the first attempt, then I drank a beer and figured it out!  Funny how that works.  Still took me an hour or so with those bars.

I could really use your advice. I am putting 14" apes on my 2014 CVO and need help with the length of lines. If your bars were 12" and 22" and 68" lines worked for you, does that mean that 24 and 70 will work for me with 2" higher bars. Thanks for any help. I,m pulling my hair out. LOL.

These are the bars on another bike.
