Hi CVOJOE,
Here is an article that goes into more detail about plans to cut pay for new workers and raise healthcare costs in order to expand number of workers and increase production.

Thanks Eagle............much more information regarding proposed cuts to the union workforce. Unfortunately, very common in today's competitive world. Tough call and be interesting to see what happens in 2010 when they supposedly run out of capacity again.

I just saw an article where Walmart has spent one billion dollars to open in China and has plans to expand there for the large customer base.
I have also seen where Harley has opened in China as well. I wouldn't be surprised to see a plant or two open there if not the whole bike then at least sub assemblies. I bet the unions are not big in China and labor would be cheeper. 8-)
Just not sure about shipping cost vs. labor rates. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Shipping costs should be $0.00 to minimum since so much is made in China already. >:( Oh, you mean to ship it back to the U.S. for us. [smiley=oops.gif]

Is it my imagination or did Harley about 30 years ago, in order to survive ask the US goverment to impose import tarrifs to all imported motorcycles. After they were back on their feet, they asked the Gov to stop the tarrifs.
If Harley starts to have bikes made in China and imported into the US, my days of owning a Harley are over!!
Looks like US made customs are in my future.

To be honest I do not want a chinese HD. I quite like the fact that its a US bike with all of its probs and benefits. In my opinion if HD will ever start being produced in China (as well as Russia or any other place) it will not be HD.

I Just wondering if anyone here is familiar with the Harley Assembly Plant in Manaus, Brazil. It was opened in 1998. The first outside of the U.S.  [smiley=confused5.gif] I know of a Local Dealer who was shipped a bike or two from Brazil "by mistake" and had to send them back [smiley=confused5.gif] Go Figure

There appears to still be a high demand for H-D cycles in the foreign market. My guess is that any bikes made OCONUS, or outside of the US, will be exclusively for distribution throughout Europe and Asia - freeing up line space at the US plants and resulting in more US-made bikes to sell here. Just my $.02 added to the speculation circle.

Of course, every Stealership in the country (that I've been to) has no less than 100 bikes in inventory, so I have no idea what they are going to do with the increased production. ??

My brother is fond of saying that everyone who wants a Harley, has one. H-D needs only keep making enough advances and new models for us to periodically supplement our collections :-)
