I’ve heard that their performance parts line for the electric bikes will be named “Whispering Eagle”

I'm sure they come with a sound system pre-loaded with tracks of open pipes, and the volume is directly related the throttle position.

I was lucky enough to get to ride one when H-D had them out for testing and market research. They are stupid fast, extremely well balanced and hella fun. I would absolutely own one depending on the final price point. They have straight cut gears in them that gives a sorta blower drive whine noise- so they aren't silent. I think 0-60 was in the high three seconds or low fours. While it's a departure from a traditional Harley, i think if it's priced right it could bring a lot of new buyers to them.

That is indeed it, they will have to price it right to attract a new generation of riders. That being said, it is HD so we will have to wait and see how that goes...

As would I  :2vrolijk_21:

if it's priced right it could bring a lot of new buyers to them.

When the Livewire tour ran through all parts US in 2014, some of the post ride interviews questions were about pricing.

Might work if a good bar is close by the charging station while you wait.

What straight cut gears are you talking about? There is no need for a transmission on an electric bike.

True. It would have to have an onboard charging system that plugs into a standard wall outlit for me to consider buying one.

I don't think that Harley brand loyalty is going to transfer to the electric bike very well. They will be competing with other manufacturers  more in quality and performance and less in loyalty.

Rode one of the Livewires, what a rush.  If the range is better I would be all over one.  Great bike.

I applaud the innovation. I didn't get a chance to ride the Livewire but a guy at my HVAC supply house bought a little Chevy commuters (spark maybe?) and gave me a ride in it, I was startled by the acceleration! He's 5 miles from home to work and his wife's commute is less than 20 so it works for them. He's a rider so I'm wondering if this will catch his interest.

It does not have a transmission. However the motor is longitudinally mounted and the straight-cut gear referenced is used to change the direction from the output shaft. From there it is on to the belt and rear wheel.

There can still be gears in the drive, right? I said nothing about a transmission. It made a very distinct noise not unlike a gear drive in a small block Chevy. It wasn't silent. A whirring noise.

I'm not sure, cannot remember, but I sat on an electric motorcycle in Roger's AR Indian dealership.  It had a shift lever on the left with a brake pedal on the right.  Not sure now if it had a clutch lever or not.  So that "may" be an electric with a trans.

As far as the HD Livewire, I'm not sure, but I believe the electric motor is mounted longitudinally within the frame.  This would require a 90 degree gearbox for the motor input and the drive belt output.  Most 90 degree gearboxes have a bit of a whine to them, unless they're hypoid geared.

I too heard the decel gear noise in the HD video, so it's not completely quiet.  Maybe they have a v-twin soundtrack and speakers to go with the throttle?  Or maybe they have playing cards in the spokes... :)

The range looks to be about half of that of the original V Rods
