If you find yourself in this category. Shop around and if possible buy a used one. The reason I say this is that you want to make sure and get what you want at the least possible price to make sure that a M/C Trailer is what you really want/need. There are several different type hitches for different brands so a test haul is not usually possible. If you camp or pack heavy on trips, a trailer might be just what you need as it puts the weight down low and on its own wheels. I bought a N-Line from a member and while I haven't pulled it in the last 3 years, it easily paid for itself on 2 extended(10 day) trips to the West Coast & Canada. I offer this advice to those that might not be sure if they want/need a trailer. The general thoughts I have read on this site is Bushtec is the best. The main thing I like about the N-Line is its tire follows the Scooter therefore much less chance of a flat. So.....shop, shop, shop and if at all possible try one first. American Legend also makes great trailers. I used to own one then sold it to a member of this site. Or if you are handy, or not so much you could do what I did when I decided I wasn't through with long haul week to 10 day or more motorcycle trips. I built my own for just over $ 500.00. 20 cu ft capacity.

I have made some changes since this picture.

I have painted it all black and gone to 12" wheels.
This trailer is rock steady at 95MPH with a total weight of 450lbs.
I originally assembled it in one day. Have disassembled and reassembled it 4 times as I made modifications to it, but each time completed in one day.

A pull behind the bike trailer is a great addition to the riding experience. I bought my first one in 1999 at Bike
Week Myrtle Beach. It was an American Legend sport. For the next few years I put over 10,000 miles on that trailer.
My second trailer was an N-Line. I bought it and painted it to match my 09 SEUC. That is the trailer Jimmy above has now and I had a blast pulling it. The trailer I have now is a BushTec Quantum. BushTec's have always set the standard for a high quality trailer.
Having had three of the best trailers I can't imagine being without one. Each of these three (N-line, American Legend and BushTec) are excellent trailers. Each of these are fairly simply made and can be worked on easy. My Quantum is a 2002 model and is in great shape. (right color also) There are many other trailer builders but I have had good luck with each of those three.
A word of warning though. There is a company in China that is building a knock off of the American Legend, the N-Line and the Bushtec. I have seen all three and a guy I know bought one of the American Legend knock offs. The three I have seen have been POS. Half ass wiring, wavy fiberglass, thin tubing. Overall a piece of crap. So buyer beware. A used BushTec, American Legend and the N-Line is a much better deal.
Since most of us have grown a little bit older as we go on our adventures I have also grown to appreciate my BushTec. The days of trying to maneuver a loaded top heavy SEUC can be a distant memory with a trailer. Every bike I have has a hitch so I can pull the BushTec. When you use a trailer it is a world of difference in comfort and confidence not having to balance that top heavy load.
I recommend using a trailer for any overnight or long distance ride. Just make sure you get a quality trailer.

I too pull a Bushtec and have owned many trailers. I cannot imagine traveling without one with Terri along. The knock offs mentioned are truly pieces of chit do not get screwed and buy one. Sadly American Legend is no longer in business but there are a lot of nice used ones out there still. Another trailer I like is Motorvation Engineering they have Harley style fenders and are American made. Hannigan makes a great trailer but it is big and goes better behind a trike. Escapade trailers are nice but they too are on the heavy and larger side.
If you just want to build one do like Mikey did I've seen it and it is another good option. Good Luck.

Happy Camping is right!!! And you are right on target about spending some time looking at and researching your trailer choice. Wife and I very much enjoy camping off the bike so when we first started looking at trailers our first look was at the trailers with the built in tents that unfold out of them. They are nice if you only use your trailer for camping. If you will take a realistic look at what you want out of the trailer and what you could use it for could change the direction you go. The cargo type is where we ended up. Ours is an Aluma, but there is several nice trailers out there depending on what you want to spend. N-line and Bushtec to name a couple. The trailer has really expanded what the we use the bike for. Trips to the grocery store....Sam's have all became a ride rather than a trip in the cage. Hope this category catches on because they are so useful

I'm on my 3rd Bushtec and it's what I'd buy again if I were buying a cargo trailer all over again (although this one came as a part of the set). And like Yellow09Serg mentions my first Bushtec spent more time on the bike than it did off the bike. I used it to and from work, shopping, site seeing, grocery getter, etc. The more you pull it, the more you get used to it and it becomes as simple as just riding the bike.
However, many years ago I did a lot of research on tent trailers and nearly bought a Time Out trailer. At 6'4" I could stand up in it to get dressed, there is a table to eat, play cards or sit your lap top (they didn't have lap tops back then....didn't even have cell phones back then). The other thing....it was raining in Sturgis....actually pouring big time when I got an opportunity to see the inside of this trailer first hand. Comfortable room for four adults, completely dry inside and all their belongings were dry and the floor of the trailer is up off the ground 6" or 8" so even your feet stay dry.
Doing a quick google I see that they're still making them a couple decades later. It had an option of an additional zip on room to put the bike in but they didn't have that option set up (see second video).

You are very correct on the Time Out camper trailers. They or one of their dealers had a couple models on display this year at Bikes, Blues, and BBQ. The room in them was amazing once they were all unfolded. Really caught the wife and I attention. But the more we talked after leaving their booth we are thinking for what we use the trailer for we will have to stick with the cargo.... sure hope they don't have a booth next year because I really don't have room in the garage for 2 trailers.... :2vrolijk_09:

Bushtec bought Bunk House camper trailers a few years back. I've seen them at the Bushtec factory in Jacksboro and they look pretty sweet to me but the wife and I aren't into camping so I cannot fully evaluate.

I've had three bushtec trailers over the years and wouldn't have any other if I were in the market for a trailer again. All three were great additions to an extended trip. Made packing a breeze. I pulled the last one all over the US and western Canada.
I've learned a few things on what to and not to carry from my travels so packing a bit lighter on the long trips now days. If I found a need for a trailer again, it's just 40 miles up the road to Jacksboro from the house... ;D
As for camping, I had my share of tents in scouts. After a long day of riding, I want a shower, room and bed so no bunkhouse or time out for this old boy...:2vrolijk_21:

This Bushtec is on it's third paint job. Nothing better than coming out of your hotel, opening the lid and dropping your bag in while others are getting their luggage strapped into place. When it rains you don't have to worry with rain flies. The list of advantages goes on and on.

I agree Bushtec is the best for a Cargo type trailer. IMO the best tent type trailer is the Aspen. I have 5 friends that own them and all love them. Queen size bed and a large area in front to stand. For years the GW crowd pulled Kwik Kamp Tent trailers. They are no longer in business however an independent guy bought all their stuff and has been making them although the price is a little high I understand. I have one that was fashioned after the Kwik Kamp with a few changes that was made in Canada and no longer made either. I still use it and it is 16 years old now and still in great shape. For me the best part is the tent is made with marine canvas that holds up extremely well.

I'm sure its the same painter that did did my wife's bike. We had a rough design for the lay out, and the exact colors picked. Its a great paint job.

I like it Greg. What size is the car top carrier? Mine is 20 cu ft. I am looking for some struts to hold the top up. I am using PVC in place of struts now. I removed the original small cam type struts, but they limited the top opening too much. Still a work in progress.

JC, I only bought it to re sell, I am sticking with my Turbo since its now close as its going to get to the color of my bike. I figured since there was such a love affair with blue it may sell well. Guy said it was matched to his 2012 Ultra. It will make someone a great trailer.

You know I thought maybe I was missing something by not trying the blue so I said what the heck give it a try. I now understand the meaning I have the blues :huepfenlol2: Like you I'm sticking with the red I'm sure its faster :huepfenlol2:
What I do like about this one is its a Quantum which has a lot of room and like you said the garment bag plus it has the rear spoiler and bumper so you have more lights to be seen at night. The best thing I thing the guy did was powder coat the wheels as we all know it is hard to keep the oem wheel from staining.

Haird I'm with you, with all the options and it having a paint job by Bushtec it would be around $6,000 new. Also has interior light and a cover. It has a couple of minor scratches that would be easy to touch up and buff if I was keeping it I would do. I figured I would take it to eBay and Craigslist next week. Should bring in the area of $2,800. 00

SOLD! If anyone is looking for a low priced nice trailer send me a PM. My buddy is dropping his Road Wagon trailer to me Friday to sell for him. Torsion bar suspension adjustable height tongue with swivel. Gel coat is factory textured. I will have all the details then. I went ahead and bought it as he needed the money, so its for sale.
Trailer is in great shape, I have it at my home now. The box portion is 54 long x 42 wide at back and 27 wide at the front. 19 inches deep at back 10 in the front plus the top hump up of around 8 inches. 12 inch wheel great tires. Swivel hitch that is height adjustable. Cooler, bra white gel coat, top is lightly textured. thick fiberglass has one gas shock to hold up top in center but it needs replaced. I pulled it and it pulls effortlessly and you cannot tell its behind you. Bill of sale only $975.00 or best offer. super nice trailer on the cheap side.

Probably be best to go to Bushtec's website or call them for proper fitment. If I remember right the V3 hitch is needed when the extension on the fender and fillers that house the tail/brake lights is used.

From the Bushtec Site: Did not see a 2016 hitch but 2014/15 is called out separately.
Version 3 Bushtec hitch for 2009 THROUGH 2013 Harley-Davidson CVO Road Glide, 2010-2011 CVO Street Glide. (Version 3 is designed to fit models with longer fender extension with no light).

The 2016 CVO Limited does not have the fender extension like the CVO Fender (with lights in the side saddlebag covers) of previous years. It is the same length as the 2012 Ultra WITHOUT the light bar on.

The 2014/15 hitch is the one you want, but call bushtec they will fix you up. If you have the V&H high output or the new V&H 4.5 inch you also have to get a new exhaust bracket.
Paint wise look up The Paint Shop in London, KY. He's had to find but does great work. He is usually got quit a waiting list.

You may also see if Bushtec will paint it. I have had their CVO painted to match trailers and they are a perfect match. Their painter is a genius.

X2....They've always done a great job of matching factory paint. But I've saw several that Bushtec painted to match CVOs that match perfectly. My current trailer is an example.....but I got lucky, somebody else had to pay for it. :P

I'm one of those guys who will likely never sell my Bushtec. If you can afford one, they truly are the best, IMHO.
The benefits of a Bushtec are many;
- Great color matching
Excellent handling, no matter the speed or how curvy the roads are
Feeling of safety
It rides soooo quietly
Quality of workmanship (mine's an '07, hope that hasn't changed)
Appearance...this trailer just kicks butt in the looks department
Extra capacity for longer trips is outstanding
Low tongue weight...typically less than 25 lbs
Cooler chest...if you want one
16" wheels are the bomb compared to the little 12" ones
Looks great! Or did I mention that?
If I've missed any benefits, I'm sure the guys will fill in the gaps.
Consider buying one used to save a bundle. Typically they've been well taken care of!
The picture below shows my trailer, color-matched Cobalt Blue for a 2007 Electra Glide Ultra Classic, but it's so close to the new RG that you don't notice it until you get really close.

JC your right I was trying to be politically correct and not mention the shopping word.
By the way just bought a 1999 Turbo + 2 heading to pick it up Tuesday. Owner died in a motorcycle crash a while back. Trailer has seen little use since then by a buddy of his and has sat in a garage covered. Family said time to sell. Has new tires, cooler, chrome tongue, stand, bra, lid with built in spoiler and brake light. Also has the ribs on top with the little spoiler to tie things on top. Has a few minor scrapes, nothing serious. Paint looks good needs a cleaning has scallops on the lid. The color looks like the old goldwing 1500 emerald green. Paint scheme appears to have the SE panels. Will be a nice one for someone to use as is or repaint.

That's not a bad looking rig, Jim! I think ACfixer (Lance) here on the site could be interested in a Bushtec one of these days. He's outside of the LA area, I believe.
Yeah...let's not get started on the "S" word. Thank goodness for Ebay. It keeps me out of the boutiques and women's clothing stores. Patty owned and operated her own boutique/womans clothing and jewelry store for over 20 years and quit the business when I retired 2+ years ago. That woman knows her turquoise and clothing. Buys new or like new womens Harley stuff for a dime on the dollar. Bought a gorgeous $600 HD jacket that looked and smelled new for like just over a $100 if I recall correctly. She's patient and strikes like a pit viper. But I could knit her a sweater in the time it takes for her to pick one out in a store. And I don't knit.
When I feel like pulling her chain a bit (which is often nowadays), I tell her the Bushtec is even big enough that it has room for all her war paint. Plus changes of boots. And hats. And jackets. And...
Gotta keep Mama happy! ::)

Harry my wife is very good at deals as well. She doesn't go shopping much but when she does she gets the deals. She has been in working in a boutique since we moved her 12 years ago. Prior to that she was an AQP expanded duty in a dental practice.
This trailer makes it a even bakers dozen of Bushtec's in the last 3 years or so. lol. The ones I have bought and sold are used all through the riding seasons in the respective states they have gone to. Prior to that they all say in garages not being pulled at all. Many of them travel thousands of miles a year. When this one finds a new home I will look for another one to get back rolling.

A brief read of most of these posts suggest happiness/satisfaction with the addition of a trailer. Must admit I have never tried one, but did indeed experience the results of a disaster with one just seconds after it happened some years back at the 100th anniversary of H.D. in Milwaukee.
I'm assuming this guy didn't follow the guidelines for (tongue weight)...........but he was pulling a trailer and the whole rig flipped on the interstate and ended up upside down roadside. He was down in the middle of the road when I got stopped just after. Wheels on the bike/trailer were still spinning.
Guy in the car following him said that the trailer started swaying and it just unloaded the rider quickly..............Whole thing spooked me as to using a trailer. :oops:

Sounds like something other than a Bushtec.
One of the things about a Bushtec is they don't bounce.....I mean the wheels never leave the ground. One of the sales demonstrations they'll pick up a Bushtec waist high by the back bumper and drop it. The wheels never leave the ground.
So unlike those empty trailers that you see bouncing down the highway from white line to white line, Bushtec doesn't bounce like that. I believe that's what they mean by "Performance Sport Trailer".......handles like a sports car....just hugs the road. :2vrolijk_21:

I agree, JC. I've had a guy who rode behind me tell me my Bushtec would hop once when I would hit some of the worst junctions between the interstate and a bridge. But it would only hop once, then it would settle right back down. I can't remember even feeling it hop, but that's the way their supposed to behave if you hit bad transition seams like that. It sounds like that guy hit something with one of his trailer wheels and it flipped it, although with a regular trailer ball, I'm left guessing how that could happen. I suppose a Bushtec could do a complete flip, since the end of the tongue will turn freely 360 degrees. Naw, this guy hit something really big. That's the only way it would flip.
IMHO, if you're gonna ride a bike much less pull a trailer, you gotta develop a routine and nail your setup each time you start on a trip. If you approach it maturely and take your time, you should never have to worry. The other side of that - and maybe even more importantly - is that you have to drive smarter than when you're not pulling a trailer. Allow more room in front of you for braking, expect traffic lights to change, practice emergency braking (especially two-up), and in general, be sober about it. And of course, remember there are two more wheels behind you and give debris in the road plenty of clearance!

I pulled a blue Bushtec home this evening. 180 miles round trip and a last minute decision. Not sure if it would have been considered "maturely" or "smarter" but I got it here in one piece. :P

Harry....yep, bought it last night. Gonna get it detailed and cleaned up and flip it. I believe it's a dark blue.....so damn dirty, hard to tell. It towed that 100 miles home as well as any of the other Bushtecs I've pulled.

Harry, I was picking. I built the one I want and have over 4000 trouble free miles on it. You will get to see it in Eureka Springs in May. But then you may want one, Redtec that is.

For those who have thought that the version 2 hitch would work on 2014 up limited's
There IS a difference in the vertical support pieces between the 2000-2013 Version 2 and the 2014 hitch Bushtec sells.
The upper support holes (3) are located in different locations. Not much different, but enough that drilling other holes would not work, compromising the strength and integrity..
The bottom section where the hitch itself goes into is exactly the same, as is the rest of the package..
Now, I phoned Bushtec and they are willing to sell the side supports (99.00 U.S. for both) which is much cheaper than the whole hitch, but then you are left with the "remains" from the previous hitch. (Hard to sell separate pieces) Your choice I guess.
I have opted to buy the 319.00 Ball hitch setup for the 2014 CVO BECAUSE IT CHEAPER (THAN THE 399.00 PIN HITCH) and because I have the hitch assembly pin and such,from before. Being from Canada, the 399.00 price tag becomes about 500.00 after the conversion from U.S. to Canadian dollar.
Also for those who are interested a non can bus cable is required (89.00) for the 2014 which is not required for the 2000-2013 version 2.

Your towing experience with a ball hitch will be different from the towing experience with the standard Bushtec pin hitch. That difference alone would be worth the additional $200 in my mind. :nixweiss:

I am not going to use the ball hitch as I already have the pin hitch from purchasing my used trailer. The purchase of the ball hitch is 90.00 cheaper so that is why the purchase of that kit. Yes, I will have a ball hitch as well, sitting collecting dust.

I took the plunge and bought a new Bushtec Roadstar and had the hitch/light kit installed by Bushtec while I was at Thunder Beach a few weeks ago. I have to say, you sure cannot tell it's back there. I haven't pulled it loaded yet, but I will have ample opportunities this year. My wife does not pack light!!! (Oh who the heck am I kidding..... I don't pack light either!!!) See you all in WV, MV and Sturgis this year!!!

You will be very happy with the Roadstar. We love it....and my wife does not pack light either (even though she rides her own). I have carried 200 lb in the trailer at highway speeds with absolutely no issues. Here is a picture of my 2012 Ultra and Roadstar. This year I purchased a 2016 CVO Limited so I am having the Roadstar colour matched along with installing the the 2016 CVO hitch from Bushtec.
Awesome setup though for long distance travel !!!!

Congratulations JB Brown, you'll really enjoy it. I know what you mean about you can't tell it's back there......no slop in the hitch. However, you will notice a difference in that it takes longer to get up to speed as well as taking longer (much longer if you're trying to go easy on your tires and brakes) in stopping. You'll also notice that the rear tire and the brake pads wear much faster if you tow a lot. I assume that's due to accelerating with the additional weight as well as the resistance in additional weight in stopping. :nixweiss:
I don't know about anybody else but I pack my share of crap, too. When you have the room, you can do that......"just in case".
Spare wheel/tire with a cover, full set of inner and outer wheel bearings, trailer tongue scale, hand pump, a box with all my detail stuff, full quart of red line oil plus what ever partial quart I have left, full set of tie downs with soft ties (just in case somebody's bike has to go on a flat bed or I need to put something on the luggage rack in an emergency), owners manual, motorcycle cover, trailer cover, trailer rain cover.....all of the above stay in the trailer all the time.
On long haul trips where I'm traveling more than 500 miles and multiple nights I also take all my heated gear....Gerbing eXtreme Element pants and jacket, heated insoles, heated gloves. I also take all my hot weather cool gear....Cool vest, a couple of cool snakes (for around the neck) several Sunbrella shirts and pants (100 % SPF factor.....the only clothes that have 100%!).
This is just the start....also have our leather jackets for when the heated gear isn't necessary, all of our clothes, swim wear and robes, shave kit, her make up kit, towels, two lap tops, camera gear for Nikon and Go Pro, the bag full of charging gear, power strip, snacks, drinks in the cooler, ice, field glasses, etc. etc. etc. The list only gets longer.....never seems to get shorter. ;)

Now with cities burning up (stay strong Fort McMurray!!) there is the ash as well...
And then there is the cooler with "beverages" as well ha ha

Congratulations! You're going to love it a LOT! When we bought ours, the production manager that showed us around the trailer at the factory said they'd really only ever had one "complaint" from everyone...you can't tell it's back there and you keep looking back to make sure it still is!!!

I had a buddy used to have the same rig you do in the picture! It's going to be great, and of course, we're going to want to see pictures of it when it's re-painted and hooked up to the CVO!!!

I mean I still have room left in my trailer and in my saddle bags. I see some pull in so loaded they couldn't add a bottle of water. :P We are spoiled....we spoil ourselves. From the Bushtec Site: Did not see a 2016 hitch but 2014/15 is called out separately.
Version 3 Bushtec hitch for 2009 THROUGH 2013 Harley-Davidson CVO Road Glide, 2010-2011 CVO Street Glide. (Version 3 is designed to fit models with longer fender extension with no light).
Wonder why it doesn't list it fitting a 2012 SE SG?

Indeed, several of us 'ol codgers use that crown bag to keep tees/divot tool/etc. in and then swap out all the stuff in your pants pockets to play golf. Perfect for that. :drink:

Being a photographer, I use two Crown Royal bags - one inside the other - filled with around seven pounds of rolls of pennys.
I used cable ties to tighten the bag just above the pennys, then hang the bag below my tripod. It's a method used to keep the tripod that much more sturdy, especially in breezy weather, and it lowers the center of gravity of it substantially!
I use another CR bag to hold a flash unit, and another to hold my Humminbird depth finder.
But of course, I got the bags from someone else! Far be it from me to drink that much CR! :P ;D
