I'm lookiing for some advice on who makes the best gasket for an EVO cylinder base. :nixweiss: This will be the 3rd time in 20 years that I've had to replace the cylinder base gaskets. Anybody have any advice on the subject? The stock HD gasket looks to be a little on the thin side. Do I need to get 1 that has some thickness to it?
Ya I know this is a problem with the beast. I also do let it warm up before riding!

3 times in 20 years? sounds good, how many miles?

Cometic makes good gaskets. Though the Harley gaskets didn't have a reputation for being bad. Accel offers a copper base gasket I've used a few times without problem also. Pretty sure I remember them even offering a kit with multiple pairs with the common thicknesses in one package.

If the cylinder bases are in VERY GOOD shape, and the case top is in good shape, especially around the studs, then Cometic coated steel gaskets, .020" thick would be my choice. I would also use more torque on the head bolts. ;) Follow Cometic's torque specs.

Cometic caskets probably will fix it. Motor is in good shape! Just some weeping at the bases.

We use nothing but Cometic's here, and they do require additional torque, as John has refered to.
The OEM, primary side, rear cylinder base gasket, always seems to fail, sooner or later.

I joined this site about a week ago.
I got a 09 FXDFSE of ebay about two months ago and i'm still waiting for it to turn up.
I'm in Australia !
I havn't introduced myself yet because I havn't got my CVO yet.
BUT I do have a 98 Softail Custom.
And I don't have any base gaskets !!
I wanted to get another 0.020" to get my squish down in a rebuild.
I used the Hayden oil fix dowels and a smear of 3bond.
In the 2 1/2 years since, I won a dyno shootout , did a 1000 mile Iron Butt from South to North up the East Coast of Australia and ridden from one side of Australia to the other and back again.
No problems with base gasket leaks !!!
I recommend the Hyden Oil Fix !!

I will replace the rings & deglaze the cylinders when I replace the base gaskets.

Cometic, you will never have to worry about taking off cold again. I've got around 43,000 miles on after having the wisco 10:1 pistons put in to match my crane cam and I've started up in 42 degrees weather taking off 3 min. LAter riding easy and still no issues!

Never have, but if cylinder base is suspected to have an issue, we grab the I.D. of the cylinder with custom aluminum soft jaws, we manufactured, in one of our lathes, support the spigot with a bull-nose center, and trim the cylinder base gasket surface as needed. :2vrolijk_21:

The Hayden dowels work well. As do premium gaskets, so long as the jug base is flat. 84 and early 85's need new studs, the ones they came with were throw aways.
If you need to pull the jugs, you can leave the pistons in the jugs so as to avoid rings and honing. Just slide the jugs up enough to expose the wrist pins. Push the pins out and leave the pistons in place. Pin retainers are a lot less money then rings and honing.

We use Cometic gaskets, and that cures that pesky r/cyl base leak.
