Title: AZ Bike Week accident
Post by: JamesT on March 30, 2015, 11:33:36 AM
This is not supposed to happen.
I pray for the families involved.

When I first heard this story they said, biker ran a red light and caused the accident. I knew something wasn't right.
Now the rest of the story is coming out.

This is such a shame!  When riding in any group you have to remain alert and responsible for yourself regardless of police or group leaders.

This was tragic and will result in changes to charity rides.
A couple of points:
1.  Another account said three other bikers had stopped for the red light and only this couple proceeded through the intersection
2.  Neither wore a helmet; however, the cause of death was not specified.

I have been on this ride in the past and other "escorted" rides and it is easy to get a false sense of security which causes you to delegate responsibility for your safety to others.  This you can not do; however, if the police are going to escort a ride they must do so properly.

As I said, this was tragic and I believe will result in changes both here in Az. and throughout the country in escorted charity rides.

I want to make sure I make this point; I pray for the person that hit them too.
I am sure they didn't mean to and I have been first (not involved) on scene to a bad mc accident before (I took drugs for 3 months trying to sleep).

This is just bad all around and I agree, it will change charity rides.

Be safe.

I live here in AZ and commute 70 miles round trip each day on my bike. Last week during bike week I hate to say it but I saw my share of dumb maneuvers,  traffic light runners and people careening down the 101 loop at close to 100. (I was going 75) Nd people were flying by me. It's a rally not a NASCAR race.

Stopped going to charity runs a long time ago.  In Ohio they got too large, too many drinkers and escorts that drove like maniacs.  I do have to say that the better ones we rode in had two riders at each intersection to stop traffic.  Not certain why this intersection had no escort at it.

I agree it will bring on changes to charity rides for sure.

Very sad situation
