Title: Regarding service procedure M8
Post by: johnmowcop on October 03, 2021, 05:36:59 PM
Hello.
Not CVO but 2019 FLHTK with the radiators and cooling fans. A couple of questions if I may..
When in for service what is the procedure for checking the operation of the fans, that is how do they determine they cut in as required.
Also, similarly, the cutting out of the cylinder from firing on a hot day when standing with the engine running, what is the procedure to establish that this works as it should.
The above presumes the service takes place on a cool/cold day.
These things function correctly as I have found during my use through the summer, but the service will be in late October/ early November.
Advice would be appreciated.

IIRC
Turn the ignition on, roll the throttle forward until the cruise light on the dash goes from orange to green.
Your owners manual will tell you under what conditions the rear cyl. Cutoff will happen.

To test the fan operation, turn the ignition on and roll the throttle past 1/2 open the fans will start .
Radiator fans will operate under certain conditions also in your manual.

I hope this short explanation will help.

Thanks for taking the time to respond HogMike.
What do the service instructions give for testing the correct trigger temperatures for the two scenarios. The method describes confirmation that both options work but does not appear to confirm they work at the required temperature.
Your information is useful though, I did not know that the fans or cylinder cutout could be initiated manually.

Come on chaps, somebody must know. What is the HD service instruction for testing the operation of the fans and the cylinder cut out. I would ask the dealer but I want to be able to say no it isn’t when he says run the engine until the fans cut in or it goes onto one cylinder, because if it’s a cold day surely that will not succeed.

To find out if the fan(s) come on at the set point(s), eitms, in the ecm you will have to be able to monitor the engine temp, inlet air temp, ambient air temp, idle rpm, and probably a couple other sensors I forgot about.
This would require hooking up Ditigal tech, TTS, or a few other devices to monitor/control settings.

For example, on my M8 my settings for the radiator fans are a little different from factory settings because of where I live and my larger motor (more heat generated). These things can be monitored and controlled to a certain degree with the proper ecm access.

Resurrection alert....

I know the TTS could set where the fans would come on when I had one on my 2017 FLHXSE. Awaiting next winter for my next TTS and Fullsac endeavour...  :-\

I set them a little lower to try to cool the motorcycle a bit. I think it was 90º C - but someone may be able to confirm.

I don’t remember where I have my fans set to come on but I have them BOTH set to the same temp due to more heat from the bigger engine. My older bike was set to the left coming on at a lower set point and the right at a little higher setting, that bike was a stock 110.

Either way, both worked for me.
