Title: HOG
Post by: Hondo2doc on October 20, 2021, 03:53:22 PM
Well since I got my new bike I received HOG email 2 to 3 times a week about events and rides. I didn't keep up my membership from my 2015 CVO purchase.

So I was thinking about attending one of these events/rides and see what the group is all about. I'm in south Florida and the local HOG chapter is based out of Peterson's HD.

Any members here have experience with their local HOG? Good, bad or indifferent?  Please chime in. Thanks.

I ride with our local chapter out of Gator HD in Leesburg.  I attend almost all of the weekly lunch rides.  I went today - 147 miles RT - with a bunch of nice guys and gals.  We have other activities too.  We volunteer for parking and store security during the big events the dealership has.  Lots of veterans, so we participate in a lot of activities around the vets. The chapter went to a HOG chapter get together  at Savanna HD earlier this year, where 4 or 5 chapters were involved. I didn't make that. We have an event where we ride up to Georgia for lunch.  We call it the Tail of the Gator  - 326 miles, 11 curves.  A satirical take off on the Tail of the Dragon.  In all, we have an active group and a bunch of good people.  Check out your local chapter and see if they fit you.

Jim that sounds cool. Okay I'll have to get off my ass and join some of these rides and see what they're all about. You're in Leesburg I'm going to head there next month for the Leesburg Bikefest. I've only been to that rally one-time anything special I should check out and see besides the main drag?? Thanks very much for the input

Gator HD, on 441 south, just 1/2 mile or so from downtown, has vendors, bands, booze, food on their property. That's usually as far as I get because I volunteer for parking and am usually too tired to bother going downtown.  In the past there have been shuttle busses running between the dealership and downtown.

Just got TWO renewals in the mail....gotta decline since there's no atlas....and the dealer that caused two seasons of grief with my '12 is the closest at 1.5 hours.

My recommendation is to go to a meeting and check it out.  I was Director of our local HOG Chapter for 4yrs, had a great relationship with our dealership, they attended our meetings and a bunch of us where at the dealership for any event they had to help with whatever they needed.  I needed a break a few years ago so I didnt run again, now the dealership is hardly ever at the meetings, some of the Chapter members talk bad about the dealership openly, all in all not a good atmosphere, so go to a meeting and check it out.

Our local HOG chapter is very good.  Lots  of good people, great support from the dealership.  We have weekly rides, we have dinner rides, we just put on the Great Smoky Mountain Hog rally, which had multiple rides every day, on poker run where winner got 5K, second was 2.5K and 3rd 1K.

It all depends on the people and the dealer.

HOG chapters are dependent on several things to be worthwhile.  Membership & dealer participation determine a lot of that.  Chapters can be good, bad, interesting, or boring.  You can tell a lot by going to a meeting or attending a chapter event or going on a ride.  Years ago I was active, now am not.

I quit on the local HOG chapter when rides became more like ice cream socials .
