Harley FXR3 Clicking sound
« on: June 02, 2020, 09:03:58 PM »

Hey guys I just picked up a super clean 1999 FXR3 with 8000 miles on it. It runs really good and strong. My question is there is a clicking sound at idle and when I pickup RPM the clicking get faster. Its not super loud but I notice it. Any advise?

Much rarer than Green. Somewhere in this site the number made of each color is available.

The sound changes up and down along with engine RPM?

Where does the sound seem to be coming from?  Top of engine, bottom of engine, left side, right side, primary, only when in gear, anytime, etc.  As best as you can try to define the location and anything else that is happening when the sound happens.

This bike has only 8400 miles on it and Im finding allot some bolts on the engine are not so tight, some where not snug at all. Any idea why a bike with so few miles is like this?

Could be a number of reasons.

Some may say poor Quality Control at the factory.

Having owned Harleys since the late '60s I say vibration. (We didn't have Loctite back then.)

Green, Blue, and Red Loctite are your friends ... The occasional use of a torque wrench helps too.

There are current videos online that also suggest an occasional massage with your wrenches to keep things tight ... One by an actual Harley mechanic.

Cheers,

I had this same problem but I cannot remember the fix. All I know is the Harley dealer in Tennessee near the Smokies fixed it and the fix was simple. Sorry I can’t be of more help but all I can remember was they fixed it, it was an easy fix and I was happy to be in my way.

The type of machine really doesn't matter.  Non-use is hard on them.  Regular use gives way to regular maintenance.  Things as simple as fluid changed give a diligent service and servicer the opportunity to put hands on things and catch issues (like an occasional loose fastener) while it's still a non-issue.

If you've not yet you need to go through the bike stem to stern.  Cleaning and packing wheel bearings and replacing wheel seals at each end, getting rid of potentially decade (or more) old tires if that's that on it, and just checking everything over.  Expect seals to start leaking when the bike goes back in to regular service after it has set for a long time.

I had to do the same thing on mine 2 1/2 years ago.  Another member here has recently been doing the same thing with a Centennial Gold Road King that has just came out of long term hibernation.  It's just the nature of bringing back any machine that has sat for awhile.

Whatever is the clicking sound you're hearing still needs to be isolated and diagnosed.  Get a better handle on where its actually coming from and go from there.

You mean the bolts that hold engine case halves together?  Those gave you a clicking sound?  That's.... unexpected.

If memory service the crankcase bolts were two pulls.  Star pattern first at 12-14 ft pds then a second round to 18-20 ft pds.  I know, that doesn't sound like much.  But it's just 5/16 bolts in aluminum holding together a non-hardening sealer.

I got everything tightened up and is sound like its coming from the front cylinder. I believe it does have adjustable push rods. And advise on how I should proceed?

It's impossible to diagnose a sound remotely like this. It's a moderately informed differential diagnosis at best. Does the ticking, clicking, whatever it is change with engine speed that you would associate with valve train? If so look there.

It could still be anything from a cracked piston skirt, to a rocker tip, to a lifter, to a bent push rod, to an exhaust heat shield, to too many other things to list. Hopefully it's simple. Hopefully it is easily and inexpensively found. You're still just got to start isolating the sound and eliminating potential problems. Start with the easiest / cheapest stuff first and work out from there.

It not the drive train the the ticking goes faster with the RPM going up. If your going 60 and pull in the clutch its quite. Is there a way to upload a video or audio?

Still can't tell any directionality from the video.  You're saying the sound goes away if you pull the clutch in?

If so check inside the primary.  Might be a loose compensator nut  :nixweiss: ?  At some point going to have to start opening things up to really find out.

My mistake the sound only slows down and get quite when I let off the throttle. It pings and when I throttle and RPM go up the ping goes up with it.

Dig in to it or take it to a shop.  Not much more can be from a distance.
