Heavy breather AC rain sock, anyone actually use it?.
« on: March 03, 2011, 10:59:35 AM »

The short story is that in 2 weeks it really hasnt rained here.

Tonight, while stranded at work, it started..  0130.. just a light drizzle. My bike sits outside my window in the parking lot.

Watched the rain slowly infiltrate the air cleaner.... finally decided to crawl my ass outside in the rain and put the rain sock on the heave breather cone.

I never used it on the ventilator.... maybe because it was closer to the tank and hiding behind my leg I thought it was safe.... plus there was never a K&N air cleaner for the ventilator so the paper element did a decent job of keeping the crap out....

Now, the heavy breather is sitting way out there and forward.

I dont see the bike ingesting large amounts of water as this is a relatively light rain.....errr scratch that.. its coming down hard now... I can hear it from inside the office.

am I being paranoid or cautious?.... I do know I will be very wet in an hour....

At least I have the my SE leather jacket... but no helmet...

I see guys all the time with the Screaming Eagle Cover on the filter even in nice weather I guess because it must look cool but I had a HB on my 08 and I never put it on the intake. My belief and its only my belief is that that 110 motor needs all the airflow it can get and I don't want to restrict the intake. Many times I got caught in a downpour and I would stop and cover the intake or if I was gong to ride strictly in the rain I would put the cover on before I left the house but that was the only time I would put it on.

Mine is always on, wasnt keen on the pink color of the paper filter, when it was new, its pretty grey/black now.

it makes a great bug catcher as well as keeping the rain off

I always leave mine on too, primarily due to the cottonwood floater things that are impossible to remove from the filter screening. I don't think the sock restricts flow that much, and it looks cool.  I will say it works great in the rain - I've been in a couple of downpours and never skipped a beat!

 :soapbox:

I use it when I wash my 2010 SESG and if it is raining.  I carry it with me at all times.

You'll definitely want to carry the rain sock with you. I have the Ventilator A/C on a 2010 SEUC and last summer I got caught in a downpour while riding on the highway at speed. All of a sudden the bike started bogging down and eventually stalled. I was able to coast it over to the shoulder. I had forgotten to put the rain sock on the A/C but I did have it on the bike. After I pulled over, I installed the rain sock. The bike was difficult to get restarted, but eventually it kicked over. I let it warm up abit and then with the rain sock on the A/C, I had no issue running through the heaviest rain which was still ahead.  Very glad I had the rain sock with me. From now on, I will always install the rain sock whenever I feel the need to put my rain gear on.

I also like the look and leave mine on all time. I probably wouldn't have been too concerned without until reading what Heatwave had to say.

Good to know, thanks for the tip.  :coolblue:

I use mine in the rain but onlt in the rain, I believe it does restrict air flow, my 110 runs different with it on  :nixweiss:

When I wash the bike..............

No, not even when I wash the bike with a spray nozzle.  It's just never been an issue with the ventilator.  But it's in my saddlebag if I ever need it. :nixweiss:

This was one of my main reasons for getting the new SE/K&N filter besides a few...very few more ponies.

BTW: I have also installed the new 4" Reinhart mufflers as well and have done NO ECM mods. The performance over stock is greatly improved.

Regards

Jerry

I used to just carry it with me and usually just stuck in my pocket.  There were a few times that I ran off without it, so decided just to put it on the bike and leave it in place.  I think that it looks good and I don't have to remember to take it with me.
