Best thing to do is buy the KN replacement and make it red.

I assume you washed it in Dawn or some other type of dishwashing/grease dissovlving soap. I let mine soak for a couple hours in warm water solution then rinsed it with a shower nozzle on the garden hose. It came very clean, then a couple weeks later I bought the K&N.

Why is K&N better. Part number?

Why is K&N better. Part number?

K&N uses a gauze/fabric as the media sprayed with a light oil to trap most dust particles. It flows better, but the tests also show that the K&N allows more fine particles into an engine (until the media starts building up a layer of crud on the outside which actually helps the filter work better)

The Stock HD unit is washable as well... so why change?

Stock replacement filter on the ventilator is around $50 bucks.  You can get the K&N for about $12 bucks more than that and have a filter that will outlast the stock one hands down.  Have K&N in both my HD's and both cars.  Have noticed that the K&N on Ginger does require a bit more attention (cleaning) as it's sitting out in the open.  Have experimented with running with the rain sock and seems to run just as well and helps keep the filter clean longer....

The stock filter will probably last through two or three maintenance cycles. Perhaps more. Getting it whiter?  Maybe a mild bleach solution and then a thorough rinse.  :nixweiss:  It would be worth a try if the color is bothering you that much.

The K&N will look red because of the oil you use to coat the filter after cleaning it.  It will also last for the practical life of the bike with proper care.  It's a great filter, and if I was replacing the filter the choice would be a no brainer.  I would never pay HD $50 for a stock filter just on principle.

If the bike spends any real time in the sun, the red pigment in the oil will fade away.

That doesnt mean there is no oil.... just the pigment is gone. The pigment is only to assure total coverage of the element anyway.

If looks is a major consideration, the best answer is to put the filter under a cover.  Oh, I forgot, that's how it used to be before someone decided it looked "cool" to leave the filter exposed to the view of the admiring public.  Never mind.

i thought the idea was to have the air cleaner pull in more cool air - having it pull air off the heads is pulling hot air.

the whole idea of a heavy breather is to pull cool air in rather than head heated air.

no matter what engine it is - if its pulling in cooler air they usually run better and make a little more power.

i run my air cleaner open - i also run a sidecar so nobody can see the aircleaner unless they are standing right by the bike so looks are not much of a issue.

When I started this subject all I wanted was to make my filter white again. It's getting a bit too deep for me. And I did make it whit by adding just a bit of bleach to the water. Nice and whit again but I'm sure it shortened the life.
