Rider from Ft. Lauderdale HOG dies in accident...
« on: October 31, 2006, 07:02:17 PM »

Carlos P. corton died in an accident last Thursday while he was attending Florida State Rally in Fort Myers........and again a "cage" was the cause of the accident. This is the story from another rider who I know......

Ft Lauderdale Harley Owners Group Weekly Newsletter

A VERY SAD ENDING
It was time again for our annual state rally, this year it was in Ft. Myers, Florida. We all met at the Tri Rail South station on the chilly morning of Thursday October 26, 2006. We mingled, hugged and kissed hello; Board members, Life Members, Chapter members and two best friends Carlos Corton and Big John Raffio.
The ride West was pleasantly uneventful and we all arrived at the Lee County Civic Center by 11:30am. We went through registration, got our shirts, pins & patches and mingled with the other chapter members. We walked around to the different vendors while the Drill Team measured the range for their performance.
Luckily, Carlos & Big John had hitched a ride with Nan Schultz in her golf cart & was chauffeured around.
Around 1pm, Carlos & Big John asked me if I wanted to leave and go with them to find a place for lunch. I had a strange intuition and told them not to go, to stay with us and that we would be leaving soon for lunch, sadly they chose to leave. I had left with the group a half hour later and we all stopped for lunch. I thought about calling Big John to let him know where we were, which was in between the convention center and the hotel, but didn

Jorge,
I sympathize with you and his family.  Unfortunately it happened yesterday, again today and will happen again tomorrow.  Every time
we straddle that seat we take a chance that someone will not see us.
Strangely it is what excites us at times and brings us to tears at other times.  We ride because it puts us in a state of freedom and intensity like nothing else we encounter normally.
Carlos' death was tragic and preventable.  He obviously shared our passion and therefore is likely looking down at us with no regrets.
For me when I straddle that seat I have fear and I ride defensively BUT
never have I ever felt more alive.
Ride free and safe. I will say a prayer for your friend and his family

Jorge

Gosh, you have been on my heart the last couple days and lifted you up in prayer when you would come to mind. I have learned to do this when the Lord places someone on my heart as even though I don't know your need....God does! Now, it's obvious why you were on my heart. At the time I was reflecting on the Joy I had in meeting you Bro!

Now I will direct my prayers to Carlos family and friends! Brother, you have been down this road before and I pray that God uses you to bring comfort to those during this time of hurt! Bless you Jorge, Love ya Bro!

Jorge, so very sorry to hear of the loss to one of your close friends.  As others have said we all take a risk when we mount up but we do also when we are in our cages, on an airplane trip, etc.  I think the most important thing to remember is to live life to the fullest each and every day.  Some of us catch an earlier train leaving this life and some a later.  What counts is the lives we touch during our brief time here.  Tell your friend he has our prayers, love and support.

:'(  Jorge, our good friendl.  Our deepest sympathies.  We send you all our love and wishes for peace and acceptance for your horrible loss and for the pain and suffering your friends family will endure.  Nothing anyone will say to you will help to ease your pain, but I sure hope you can find the way to bear your burdens and help your bro's friends and family bear theirs.  Love and Peace.

Jorge,
Nothing can really be said except so sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. Thoughts and prayers are with you and his family in this time of grief. Far too many of our brothers and sisters are taken by the carlessness of others.

Jorge, we knew at the rally that someone from the chapter had gone down.  When it was finally known that Carlos had lost his life, we had a private moment of silence for him.  It was awfully tough on the drill team.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

We know the road and spot very well; our club rides that road often, and just one month ago had a service at the park right there for one of our members, and cast his ashes on the water.

If it's OK with your group, we'll have a little memorial ride for Carlos to that park. Please let me know the date and time of the funeral, and we'll have a small service there at the same time.
  God bless.

Ride safe,
Jerry
